FORMER bodyguard of Saddam Hussein wants to open a fish and chips shop in one of Sydney's prestigious harbourside suburbs.
O'day Al-Tekriti has lodged a development application with North Sydney Council for the seven-day business at Waverton. Another restaurant owned by Mr Al-Tekriti burnt down earlier this month in suspicious circumstances.
Mr Al-Tekriti's insurance payout - and financial future - hinges on a police investigation into the fire.
"I'm telling the truth, I have no idea what happened," he said yesterday.
"I can't tell how the police think. I've given them everything I have, documents, the lot. Ever since I came to Australia I've been so unlucky."
Of his planned new venture, he said: "My wife's grandchildren love fish and chips but we always have to drive to Chatswood to get them. That's when I realised I should open a business in Waverton, where we live, not just selling fish and chips but calamari and all types of seafood."
Mr Al-Tekriti, 40, worked as a major in the Iraqi Army, running a defence unit in Saddam Hussein's personal security force. He was a cousin of the late dictator.
He made national headlines in 2005 when it emerged he had been given refuge in Australia, despite originally being rejected by the Department of Immigration, which found he had committed crimes against humanity.
When he arrived on a false passport in 1999 he admitted membership of Saddam's special security service, which tracked down and interrogated Iraqi dissidents trying to flee the regime.
But in 2001 an Administrative Appeals Tribunal overturned the department's finding on grounds that were never made public.
In 2003 the story took a further twist when Mr Al-Tekriti married Singapore-born doctor Bernice Pfitzner, whom he met at the Woomera detention centre.
Dr Pfitzner, 30 years his senior and a former Liberal member of the South Australian Parliament, later said: "He was an inmate and I was the medical doctor. He was brought to my attention because he was on a hunger strike.
"After I returned to Adelaide he used to telephone about three times a week for friendship and support.
"He was released on a bridging visa in 2002. I was his sponsor. He came to Adelaide."
When asked if it was a marriage of convenience, she said: "Definitely a marriage of love."
Last year the pair escaped the innuendo that plagued them on the Adelaide social circuit and moved to Sydney. They reside at Dr Pfitzner's waterside penthouse in Waverton - a few hundred metres from Mr Al-Tekriti's proposed fish and chips shop.
Mr Al-Tekriti said he had grown "sad and depressed" because life had "not gone according to plan."
He was a witness for the Federal Government in a trial against an alleged people smuggler and angrily said the Government was happy to rely on his good character when it needed help, yet was still refusing to make his visa status permanent.
In June he purchased the Chargrill Cafe at Riverstone. At 9.20pm on July 8, neighbours heard a loud explosion and saw the building burst into flames.
A NSW Police spokesman said: "The fire is being treated as suspicious. We have spoken to the owner and the matter is the subject of a police investigation". Mr Al-Tekriti told The Sun-Herald: "[I planned to] build the business in Riverstone, get approval from North Sydney Council for the seafood place in Waverton, then take out a mortgage to fund it.
"I've lost over $60,000 on the Riverstone restaurant. I only had it a month. The staff had left for the evening. I have no idea what occurred after that. Suddenly it was gone. I have nothing to hide."
Mr Al-Tekriti believes he was targeted by someone who didn't want his business to succeed. "I believe I had an enemy in town," he said.
His present circumstances are a far cry from the days when he once received money, cars and houses as gifts from Saddam. "I have no money. I am living off my wife. I am so sad. I hope the fish shop will be the start of something better."
Dr Pfitzner said: "Things never seem to fall right for him."

Het moet nu niet nóg gekker worden, maar Anja Meulenbelt vertelt op haar weblog dat ze net is getrouwd met de directeur van haar Gehandicapten project op de Gazastrook (NCCR), Khaled Abu Zaid.
In haar woorden: "Ik blijf ook het nieuws over de situatie in Gaza volgen, helaas nog uit de verte. We zitten te wachten of Khaled met zijn zoons naar Nederland kan komen. Hij heeft nu een visum. Maar de grens bij Rafah is nog gesloten. Zo tikt er elke dag een stukje van zijn visum weg, en de jongens die nu zomervakantie hebben en zo verschrikkelijk graag naar Nederland willen komen zien de kans dat het nog gaat lukken steeds kleiner worden. Khaled en ik zijn inmiddels getrouwd, voor wie dat nog niet weten. Maar ook dat helpt niet veel. Ambassade gebeld, is er geen mogelijkheid om Khaled, die nu met een Nederlandse is getrouwd, en die al vaker in Nederland is geweest via de andere grensovergang, door Israel heen, naar het vliegveld van Tel Aviv of desnoods naar dat in Amman te krijgen. De mensen van de ambassade doen hun best. Het lukt niet. De Israelische autoriteiten geven geen krimp. Hij mag Gaza wel via Israel verlaten, maar dan mag hij nooit meer terug. En dat is natuurlijk de bedoeling niet, want hij heeft daar zijn werk en wil Gaza niet in de steek laten. Zorgen dat hij de Nederlandse nationaliteit krijgt, dat zou helpen. Maar dat duurt nog minstens drie jaar. Als je je huwelijk fris wilt houden: trouw met een Palestijn, dan zie je elkaar zo weinig dat het de moeite niet is om ruzie te maken. "En het gaat nog verder. Ze wordt gefeliciteerd door Hendrik Jan Bakker, de man die milieu en Sharia met elkaar wil verbinden, (maar dat geheel terzijde) en dan antwoord ze:
"Ik weet het ook nog maar een half jaar, Hendrik Jan. Dankjewel. We hadden een mooie kleine bruiloft op het stadhuis in Amsterdam, met een moslim die ons trouwde, een christen die ons de zegen gaf en een joodse (die ons eens aan elkaar voorstelde) die ons er bij omarmde. En iedereen in tranen."
Khaled Abu Zaid heeft zich op 30 augustus 2004 op het weblog van Anja Meulenbelt zelf voorgesteld. Daar schreef hij trouwens nog dat hij getrouwd was en twee zoons heeft, maar het kan natuurlijk zijn dat zijn vrouw gestorven is of gescheiden. Je weet het niet. Is prive. Maar belangrijker voor mij is, dat hij op het weblog vertelt, dat hij ook terrorist geweest is. Hij schrijft over de tijd vóór de eerste Intifada:
"Voor mij luidde deze periode een nieuwe fase van politiek bewustzijn in, met de vraag: waar staan we, wat zijn onze dromen, wat is onze hoop voor de toekomst, willen we voor eeuwig onder een bezetting leven? Dus sloot ik me aan bij de Fatah beweging, de beweging die een revolutie wilde beginnen om de Palestijnen te bevrijden, om geheel Palestina te bevrijden van de Israëlische bezetting. We begonnen ons te organiseren in kleine verzetsgroepen, en ik leidde twee groepen, een voor mannen en een voor vrouwen. Ik gaf ze les in verzetswerk, en hoe je wapens en explosieven moest gebruiken. Toen werden we gepakt door de Israëlische Veiligheidsdienst, dat was nog voor de eerste intifada, en ik werd voor zeven jaar naar de gevangenis gestuurd. Ik had nog niets gedaan behalve plannen maken, en misschien was het maar gelukkig dat we nog niet begonnen waren om onze wapens te gebruiken. We hadden niemand gedood of gewond. In feite waren veel van de mensen in de gevangenis nog niet actief geworden, maar ze hadden zich uitgesproken tegen de Israëlische bezetting, en ze hadden zich bij de verzetsgroepen aangesloten, feitelijk waren ze politieke gevangenen. "
Is het een schijnhuwelijk? Ik ben bang van wel. Welke zichzelf respecterende Palestijnse man, met de status van directeur, trouwt vrijwillig met een vrouw die 15 jaar ouder is? Of ben ik nu ouderwets?
Volgens mij is het gewoon een poging om een ex-terrorist aan een visum te helpen.
