MIM: In a 2026 podcast interview "Recovered Antisemite" and 'Arab Zioni$t', Syrian -Lebanese Muslimah Rawan Osman related the experience of seeing Hasidic Jews in a kosher food store in France for the first time in 2011,fleeing and having a severe panic attack.
Osman now lives in Germany and discussed a 2018 incident of a Syrian 'migrant' attacking two young men who were wearing kippot while walking down a street in an upscale Berlin neighborhood. A short video of the incident went viral and resulted in and condemnation and vows to fight antisemitism from German PM Merkel to Jewish and Israeli individuals and institutions worldwide.
The story had an unexpected twist because the two young men wearing kippot were not Jewish! They were Arabs with Israeli passports who wanted to prove to their friends in Israel that wearing a kippa in Berlin was safe.

An migrant from Syria has admitted in court that he attacked an Israeli man wearing a skullcap in Berlin.
The 19-year-old man lashed out with his belt at the man in broad daylight in a street in the German capital.
The young migrant apologised for his actions.
The attack in April was filmed by the victim on his smartphone and sparked outrage when shared on social media, triggering street rallies in solidarity with Germany's Jewish community.
But it also led to the leader of Germany's Jewish community advising Jews to avoid wearing traditional skullcaps (kippahs) in big cities.
Footage of the assault shows the attacker shouting "yahudi", Jew in Arabic, before lashing out and injuring the Israeli man.
The victim, a 21-year-old student, later said that he was not Jewish but an Israeli Arab.
He told the German broadcaster Deutsche Welle that he and his friend had wanted to test whether wearing a kippah was safe in inner city Berlin.

BERLIN -- German police have launched an investigation after a young Jewish man wearing a kippah was beaten with a belt on the streets of Berlin on Tuesday, with the victim filming what is presumed to have been an anti-Semitic motivated attack.
The victim, Adam Armush, was assaulted in a park near his home in the city's upper-class Prenzlauer Berg neighborhood. In the video, the attacker is seen swinging a belt at Armush and shouting "Yahudi," Jew in Arabic.
I'm surprised something like this happened to me. I'm still in shock," Armush told Israel's Kan public broadcaster. "We came out of our home, my friend and I, wearing our kippash, and walked down the street."
They were then approached by three men who started cursing at them. "We didn't talk to anyone, didn't answer them. So when they kept cursing us, my friend asked them to stop cursing, and that got them angry. So one of them ran at me," he told Kan.
The young man explained that he felt the need to film the attack, "because I didn't think we could catch him before police arrived. I wanted to give police something to go on."
The video spread on social media where it caused uproar. Berlin police confirmed Wednesday that is has launched an investigation. The attacker fled the scene and authorities are now trying to identify him.
Berlin's Mayor Michael Müller (SPD) condemned the attack, stressing that "anti-Semitism is not part of the Berlin we want to live in. I am grateful that Jewish life is once again visible in our city and it makes an important contribution to the diversity of our open and tolerant metropolis.
"Berlin is a city of freedom, for which we fight on a daily basis by clearly positioning, educating and actively opposing anti-Semitism, racism and hatred, and I am sure that the police and investigative authorities do everything necessary to capture the perpetrators and prosecute them."
"It is unbearable to see a young Jewish man being attacked on the street in the well-off Berlin district of Prenzlauer Berg because he's a Jew," noted Director of the Jewish Forum for Democracy and Against Anti-Semitism (JFDA), Levi Salomon, which published the video on Twitter.
"This shows that Jewish people are not safe here. Now politics and civil society need to intervene. We do not need any more speeches, we have to act."
Elio Adler, chairman of WerteInitiative, a Jewish-German advocacy group, stressed that such incidents should not be viewed as isolated cases and that the only thing that makes this case unique is that it was caught on film.
"It is naive to believe that the hatred of this young attacker is directed only against Jews. Someone who acts in this way rejects our form of social coexistence. It should be in Germany own best interests to either educate such people in accordance with our liberal-democratic system, or to punish them so hard that they do not even come up with the idea to express their crude attitude with words or with force," Adler told i24NEWS.
Director of the AJC's Berlin branch, Deidre Berger, did however focus on the anti-Semitic nature of the attack, saying it "shows that anti-Semitic violence has now reduced all inhibitions. We cannot close our eyes to the increasing anti-Semitism in parts of the Arab and Muslim community."
"Jews must not become fair game on our streets," she told i24NEWS.
Meanwhile, newly published statistics by the Berlin-based Department for Research and Information on anti-Semitism (RIAS) point to an increase in the number of anti-Semitic attacks in the German capital. The Berlin-based think tank, which also documents those incidents not investigated by the police, registered 947 anti-Semitic incidents in 2017 – a 60% increase compared to 2016 (590 incidents).
In particular, RIAS identified 30 anti-Semitic incidents in Berlin's educational institutions in 2017, twice as many as the year before. Those included property damage, discrimination against Jewish children and anti-Semitic disturbances of events and anti-Semitic propaganda, occurring in schools, kindergartens, museums and universities.
"This is the highest number since we began collecting data," said the project's leader Benjamin Steinitz. "People are confronted daily with anti-Semitism in Berlin. We are aware of an average of two to three incidents per day. Anti-Semitism is a social problem. It shapes the daily lives of those affected and they must not be left alone."
