She has led numerous interfaith events, such as the theater production, Same Difference, and the Cordoba Bread Fest Banquet. MIM: Daisy Khan explains how she and her husband, radical Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, founded ASMA and how WISE came to be in 2015.

Daisy Khan
July 28, 2015 ·

Dear Friends,

As you know, eighteen years ago I co-founded the American Society for Muslim Advancement (ASMA), with Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf to elevate the discourse on Islam and foster environments in which Muslims thrive. ASMA strove to strengthen an expression of Islam - one based on cultural and religious harmony and an appreciation for diversity. In this right, ASMA flourished as a unique bastion for American Muslims to explore their dual identity as Americans and Muslims.

Post-9/11, we were overwhelmingly confronted with two challenges: the widespread marginalization of Muslim women around the globe and alienation of Muslim youth, both left without a unifying voice.

Collectively, we realized that we need a vision, one that would reverse the trend of alienation and foster positive action to give voice to the struggles of pioneering leaders. In 2004, we founded the Muslim Leaders of Tomorrow (MLT), and in 2005 the Women's Islamic Initiative in Spirituality and Equality (WISE), each of which embodied my belief in the power of women to transform the world, and the next generation's commitment to carry our values forward. From humble beginnings, this network now includes thousands of civil society and thought leaders from around the globe.

Recent developments surrounding the rise of violent extremism groups have once again thrust Muslim women and youth into the spotlight. Recognizing a natural synergy between these key groups, and an opportunity to harness their collective energy by working collaboratively, I have redirected my efforts by forming WISE as a new independent organization where I will serve as Executive Director. I have stepped down as Executive Director of ASMA which will now be headed by Imam Feisal and you will be hearing directly from him about its direction, vision and reorganization.

In making this transition, WISE partnered with the highly reputable New York based nonprofit Fund for the City of New York (FCNY), which will provide organizational and fiscal support, allowing us to rapidly operationalize our activities as we begin this exciting new chapter.

On June 2, 2015 WISE was launched as its own organization. We showcased our ongoing work in Afghanistan with our Afghan partner, Jamila Afghani, whose dedication to training imams in combatting violence against women and violent extremism has been extraordinary. One imam who participated in the Imam Training Program said, "The scriptural evidence for non-violence provided to us enabled me to convince 80 Taliban to lay down their arms."

Our success with the Imam Training Program in Afghanistan inspired us to take our own stand against violent extremism from here in the United States. WISE, along with 20 expert contributors and Muslim Community leaders, is launching a grassroots community-based program to combat the potential growth of violent extremism within our own communities. By creating a Community Guide (set to be released this September 2015), Muslims at every level will learn grassroots techniques for combating violent extremism and promoting Islam's message of peace and inclusion.

As part of this project, and in partnership with our network of Muslim peer groups, we will be conducting a survey to gather important and original data to gauge the aggregate views of Muslims in America, which will then be inputted into the Guide. We will be sending out the survey soon, so stay tuned.

WISE, along with its dedicated Advisory Board, looks forward to your support as we work together to create a new age of inclusion, acceptance, and respect for all. We invite you to join us in this new endeavor by staying connected with us on social media:

MIM:Below some examples of the taqiyya and whitewashing of the connections of Islam to terrorism contained in the WISEUp Report.

An even more obscene travesty is the list of the '700 plus' Muslims with ties to terrorists and terrorism who are touted as 'condemning terrorism!'. The list includes documented terrorist supporters and Islamo supremacists such as CAIR's Nihad Awad, Siraj Wahhaj, Zaid Shakir, Mazen Mokhtar and Mustafa Ceric. Information on all these and other Islamists on the list who actively promote Islamo facism and "Muslim extremism" can be found by Googling their names on MIM.

"It was a hopeful and inspiring day with American Muslim as the voices of spirituality, peace and interfaith activism, religious leaders and scholars, social justice advocates, journalists from all races and faiths united to speak on the topic of hate, extremism, how knowledge ends extremism as well as the social and political forces that conspire to hijack faiths and/or races at various times in history. It was most reassuring to hear how this has been a part of American history since its founding, and how the "politicization" of the faith of Islam is just another tragic marker on a trajectory deeply embedded in our culture. The panels were illuminating and reassuring at the same time, as they went deep to see the forces working towards hate, while spotlighting what is possible to create peace, love and understanding in the world today." Mino Akhtar, Blogger

"I had the pleasure of providing a veteran's perspective on a comprehensive effort to speak out against Islamophobia and push back against twisted versions of Islam like those propagated by the Islamic State and other terrorist organizations. While on an opening panel of scholars and practitioners, an audience member asked a typical inquiry, one heard countless times since 9/11, "Why don't moderate Muslims speak out against terrorism?" I could hear some exasperated gasps from audience members. If the WISE Up Report supported by over 70 Muslim and non-Muslim experts wasn't a clear example of "moderate Muslims speaking out," then I didn't know what was. The WISE Up Summit constituted a climax of years of effort to debunk conventional wisdom about Islam, to discredit terrorist ideology, and to begin a public campaign of education aimed to demystify Islam for average Americans. Hundreds of people registered to attend the Summit in Washington, D.C. at the Carnegie Endowment, yet the media didn't show up. This was not due to a lack of effort on the organizer's part. Daisy Khan, Executive Director of WISE, personally reached out to dozens of journalists and media organizations. She had intermediaries in the press also reach out on her behalf. It seemed there were other pressing issues to cover that day."
