Arts weigert 90-jarige vrouw te helpen omdat ze Joods is – "ga maar naar Gaza"
Een Vlaamse arts, die woensdagavond de telefoonlijn bemande van de wachtdienst van geneesheren weigerde om medische hulp te bieden aan een 90-jarige Joodse vrouw die een ribfractuur had opgelopen. "Ik kom niet! Stuur ze maar voor enkele uren naar Gaza, dan zal ze geen pijn meer voelen", luidde het antwoord. De arts bekende kort daarna het verhaal en zei dat dit gebeurde in een "emotionele vlaag". Volksgezondheid onderzoekt de zaak.
Het was de zoon van de 90-jarige Bertha Klein die gisterenavond rond 23 uur belde naar de wachtdienst van geneesheren. Zijn moeder verkeerde in felle pijn nadat ze een ribfractuur had opgelopen. De arts wist al snel dat het om een Joodse patiënt ging, de naam en het adres in Antwerpen verraadden dat al, evenals het accent (Klein is Amerikaan).
Toen de familie vroeg of de dokter niet kon langskomen om de vrouw van de vreselijke pijn te helpen antwoordde hij botweg "Ik kom niet", en legde de telefoon neer. De familie belde meteen terug, daarop zei de arts: "Stuur haar maar naar de Gazastrook voor enkele uren, daarna zal ze geen pijn meer voelen".
OPEN-VLD DISTRICTSLID
De familie was in shock en belde ondertussen naar een vriend, Samuel Markowitz, districtsraadslid in Antwerpen voor de Open VLD. Markowitz is daarnaast ook ambulancier en weet dat een arts nooit een patiënt mag weigeren. Hij belde zelf naar de hulplijn en confronteerde de dokter met zijn uitspraken (het gesprek werd ook opgenomen voor later bewijs).
De dokter bekende de feiten en zei dat dit gebeurde in "een vlaag van emotie". Markowitz lichtte het hoofd van het departement Volksgezondheid voor de regio Antwerpen in terwijl de kleinzoon van de 90-jarige vrouw, Hershy Taffel, een klacht neerlegde bij de politie voor racisme en xenofobie.
Meneer Taffel vertelt hoe zijn grootmoeder in tranen uitbarstte. "Dit doet mij denken aan wat wij in Europa ondergingen 70 jaar geleden, ik had nooit gedacht dat die dag ooit nog zou herhaald worden".
IMPORT VAN CONFLICT
Michael Freilich, hoofdredacteur van Joods Actueel, is bezorgd over deze import van het Midden-Oostenconflict naar ons land.
"Dit is het zoveelste incident op rij in een korte tijd. Een winkel in Antwerpen weigerde een vrouw te bedienen omdat ze Joods was, een café in Luik heeft een bordje opgehangen met de melding ‘honden welkom, Joden niet', in Brussel werden er tijdens een betoging leuzen als ‘dood aan de Joden' gescandeerd en op de Facebook zien we elke dag oproepen van haat tegen Joodse mensen.
En laat ik het voor de zoveelste keer herhalen: Belgische Joden zijn GEEN Israëli's! Ze hebben een louter emotionele band met dat land maar hebben zelf geen enkele invloed op het conflict. Ze stemmen niet in Israël, gaan er niet naar het leger en betalen er geen belastingen.
Elke vorm van racisme en antisemitisme moet krachtdadig worden veroordeeld door politici. Hoogtijd, me dunkt."

A Flemish doctor Wednesday night on the telephone manned as a duty of physicians refused to provide medical help to a 90-year-old Jewish woman who had suffered a rib fracture. "I will not come! It was the son of the 90-year-old Bertha Klein who yesterday evening around 11 pm phoned the doctors' help line. His mother was in agonizing pain after she had suffered a rib fracture. The doctor discovered very quickly that it was a Jewish patient: her name and Antwerp address betrayed all that, as well as the accent (Klein is American).
When the family asked if the doctor could come to the aid of this woman in terrible pain, he replied bluntly, "I will not come," and put the phone down. The family called back immediately; then the doctor said, "Send her to the Gaza Strip for several hours, she will not feel pain anymore then."
The family was in shock and meanwhile phoned a friend, Samuel Markowitz, district councilor in Antwerp for the Open VLD. Markowitz also knew that a physician should never refuse a patient. He himself called the help line and confronted the doctor with his statements (the interview was also recorded for later proof).
The doctor admitted the facts and said that this was in "a fit of emotion." Markowitz explained all this to the the head of the Department of Health for the Antwerp region, while the grandson of the 90-year-old woman, Hershy Taffel, registered a complaint with the police for racism and xenophobia.
Mr. Taffel tells how his grandmother burst into tears. "This reminds me of what we underwent in Europe 70 years ago, I never thought that day would ever be repeated."
IMPORT OF CONFLICT
Michael Freilich, editor of Jewish News, is concerned about the import of the Middle East conflict to our country.
"This is yet another incident in succession in a short period of time. A shop in Antwerp refused a woman to serve because she was Jewish, a cafe in Liege has a sign hung with the message ‘Dogs are welcome, Jews are not,' and in Brussels slogans like ‘Death to the Jews' were chanted during a demonstration. And on Facebook, we see calls every day of hatred against the Jewish people.
"And let me repeat for the umpteenth time: Belgian Jews are NOT Israelis! They merely have an emotional bond with that country but have no influence on the conflict. They do not vote in Israel, do not go to the army and pay no taxes there.
"Any form of racism and anti-Semitism must be condemned by politicians vigorously. High Time, methinks."
