McCain Compromised Regarding The Muslim Brotherhood, Abedin Must Be Vetted

July 23, 2012

By WILLIAM MAYER

09:30 - July 23, 2012 - San Francisco, CA - PipeLineNews.org - In a long winded presser issued by Senator John McCain [R-AZ], in part delivered as part of a floor speech, the Senior Senator from Arizona delivered a blustery attack on Representatives Michelle Bachmann, Trent Franks, Louie Gohmert, Thomas Rooney and Lynn Westmoreland, all signatories to a letter of inquiry made to the State Department's Deputy Inspector General, Ambassador Harold W. Geisel.

The letter expressed concern over the apparently successful influence peddling efforts being run by American members of the Muslim Brotherhood and its domestic affiliates.

"...activities that appear to be a result of influence operations conducted by individuals and organizations associated with the Muslim Brotherhood...it has been established in federal court that the Muslim Brotherhood's mission in the United States is "destroying the Western civilization from within" a practice the Muslim Brotherhood call "civilization jihad..." [source, Geisel Inquiry]
Specifically named in the request is Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's long-time [circa 1996, when she was a Clinton WH intern] aide, Huma Abedin.
"according to The Muslim Brotherhood in America: The Enemy Within a product of the Center for Security Policy, the [State] Department's Deputy Chief of Staff, Huma Abedin, has three family members - her late father, her mother and her brother - connected to Muslim Brotherhood operatives and/or organizations. Her position affords her routine access to the Secretary and to policy making..."
The document goes on to note that under Mrs. Clinton's watch, often as a result of the Secretary's personal direction, numerous actions have been taken which were, "enormously favorable to the Muslim Brotherhood..."
In a recent piece McCain's Statement In Support Of Clinton Aide Huma Abedin Irresponsible Senator we stated:
"...At this point we are unable to judge the veracity of these charges, but they certainly are a serious enough matter to demand a thorough investigation. There is at the very least, the appearance of great potential impropriety here.

For the record, though Abedin has been an aide to Mrs. Clinton for an extended period of time, she has never been thoroughly and publicly vetted. This must also be addressed, the sooner the better because presently Ms. Abedin has access to sensitive national security documents and is in daily communication with the United States' chief diplomat, making her privy to information which must remain sacrosanct...
Mr. McCain's self-serving actions today are inexcusable. He has, absent any real facts, made up his mind on the matter and used the occasion of his speech to publicly lambaste those who have initiated this process.

This inquiry is in its infancy and it deals with subject matter essential to the continued security of the United States and today Senator McCain attempted to cut that process off at the knees..."

We believe McCain's bottom line here is easy to understand, he has been compromised - through his own foolishness - beyond all measure by his long existing personal relationship with both Mrs. Clinton and Huma Abedin. His statements on the matter therefore are entirely self serving making him perhaps the least objective member in the 535 members of Congress on this matter.

He has already damaged his career beyond repair, anything said past this point will only serve to drive that home.

In the meantime while this is being sorted out, the information which is now widely available makes Huma Abedin's continued presence at State untenable in that it presents a picture of great potential impropriety. Until this matter is settled by a full investigation, Mrs. Clinton would be wise to place Abedin on administrative leave, without prejudice. The national security interests of the United States demand nothing less.

Over the last few days there has been a significant pushback against the Senator's often incoherent temper tantrum. We call two pieces to your attention, all highlighting why the investigation which these five brave Congressmen have called for must go forward. It has nothing to do with a "witch hunt."

The first is from Nonie Darwish, an ex-Muslim [an apostate under the Shari'a]. Born in Egypt and having seen the excesses of Islamism, she has repudiated her former faith, becoming an anti-jihad activist. The piece appears in Front Page Magazine [see, Huma Abedin's Mother and an Islamist Agenda]

In that piece Darwish raises troubling questions:

"...Dr. Saleha Mahmood Abedin [Huma's mother] has been identified in Saudi Arabia as one of the founding members of the Muslim Sisterhood, a Muslim Brotherhood women's group...Dr. Abedin is...an activist who supports Sharia law. She is also a long-time chairperson of the "International Islamic Committee for Woman and Child" (IICWC)..."
Among the issues which Darwish says are advocated by the IICWC were presented, in Arabic, on the the IICWC Website] - "...The following topics were discussed...suggesting the annulment of Egyptian moderate laws, which would be replaced by Sharia..."

Darwish continues, listing some of the positions which Saleha Mahmood's IICWC is working to incorporate into Egyptian law.

High priorities include overturning, "...the current laws criminalizing female genital mutilation...demanding that the laws forbidding child marriage below the age of eighteen be revoked [with no minimum age being set]...demanding that the laws forbidding marital rape be revoked....[and eliminating statutes enforcing]...the criminalization of physical and mental abuse of parents against children, so long as the punishment does not cause a permanent deformity or the beating is too extreme..."

Darwish concludes, "...appearances do count and Huma and Clinton's defenders need to understand that. Rep. Bachmann and her colleagues should be applauded for pushing the alarm button, not just regarding Abedin, but regarding many others in our government, to alert us all to a possible security threat [posed by the Muslim Brotherhood] and the "civilization jihad" they aspire for in America."

What we can draw from the above is again our baseline position, until this matter is settled it is potentially damaging to American interests to allow Abedin to actively serve within the State Department. Again administrative leave, without prejudice is indicated.

Next we have Andrew C. McCarthy, writing for National Review magazine [see, Question about Huma Abedin]

Mr. McCarthy knows a bit about the threat posed by the jihad, he is the former Federal Prosecutor who put Omar Abdel-Rahman [aka the "Blind Sheikh"] behind bars for life because of his involvement in a plot to bomb famous New York landmarks.

Mr. McCarthy's piece is far too long and detailed to summarize, however, he probes the "appearance of impropriety" question head on:

"...That investigation would include an inquiry into whether Ms. Abedin's family ties render her unsuitable for a position that involves access to classified information about the Brotherhood...this is not remotely unreasonable, nor is it an inquisition into Ms. Abedin's decency and rectitude. When I was a prosecutor, the Justice Department would not have let me take a case that involved friends of my family. It's not that they didn't trust me; it's that government is supposed to avoid the appearance of impropriety — legitimacy hinges on the public's belief that actions are taken on merit, not burdened by palpable conflicts of interest..."
Again, no one is accusing Abedin of anything, rather suggesting that the facts available to the public demand such an inquiry.

McCarthy extensively covers the activities of Huma's long deceased father, showing him to have been very active in furthering Islamism.

Moving on to Huma's mother, "Dr. Abedin, too, has been a member of the Muslim Sisterhood, 'which is essentially nothing more than the female version of the Brotherhood,' according to Walid Shoebat, a former Brotherhood member who has renounced the organization. The Brotherhood is not only the font of Sunni supremacist ideology, it spearheads the international support network for Hamas, the terrorist organization that openly proclaims itself as the Brotherhood's Palestinian branch..."

Here the author offers much the same critique of the IICWC support for harsh implementation of Shari'a, "Dr. Abedin has led the International Islamic Committee for Woman and Child (IICWC), an Islamist organization that hews to the positions of Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, the Brotherhood's leading sharia jurist. Like Brotherhood entities, the IICWC defends such practices as female genital mutilation and child marriage..."

He then begins his summation with an exhaustive listing of the Muslim Brotherhood friendly actions taken by the Department of State under the guidance of Mrs. Clinton, who has been advised by Huma Abedin.

McCarthy concludes, making much the same point as have many observers including this author:

"...The five House conservatives are asking questions to which the State Department's own guidelines, to say nothing of common sense, demand answers. Answers not just about Huma Abedin but, far more significantly, about the government's policy toward virulently anti-American Islamists. Americans deserve nothing less — even if the usual GOP spaghetti spines would prefer to give them nothing, period."
There is entirely too much here to simply ignore the issue, as the hopelessly compromised Senator McCain suggests. The questions raised demand answers and this has now, largely due to McCain's self-serving aggrandizement, become a national issue and it is not going away.
