Senator McCain's Statement In Support Of Clinton Aide Huma Abedin Irresponsible

July 18, 2012

"And in Abedin's case, there are ample reasons for raising these questions. Her father, Syed Z. Abedin, was a professor in Saudi Arabia who founded the Institute for Muslim Minority Affairs, an organization supported by the Muslim World League, a Brotherhood organization. Her mother, Saleha Mahmoud Abedin, is a member of the Muslim Sisterhood, the Brotherhood's adjunct organization for women. The Brotherhood itself is in its own words, according to a captured internal document, dedicated to "eliminating and destroying Western civilization from within and sabotaging its miserable house." http://frontpagemag.com/2012/robert-spencer/huma-abedin-and-the-muslim-brotherhood-bachmann-vs-mccain/

July 18, 2012 - San Francisco, CA - PipeLineNews.org - Senator John McCain [R-AZ] today took to the floor of the U.S. Senate where he delivered an intemperate attack on efforts by members of Congress to investigate the possibility that this White House along with its Department of State have been penetrated by Muslim Brotherhood operatives.

Specifically Mr. McCain spoke in defense of long-time aid to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Huma Abedin, against whom have been lodged serious allegations regarding troubling ties maintained by some of her relatives to foreign Islamist organizations.

As we wrote in a June 19 dispatch:

"On June 13, five U.S. Congressmen, Michele Bachmann [R, MN], Trent Franks [R, AZ], Louie Gohmert [R, TX], Thomas Rooney [R, FL] and Lynn Westmoreland [R, GA] sent an open letter to U.S. Deputy Inspector General, Ambassador Harold J. Geisel, expressing alarm over the administration's lack of judgment when dealing with Islamist entities, specifically the Muslim Brotherhood..." [source Congress Alarmed Over Muslim Brotherhood Influence Operation Within the Administration

That letter in pdf format is available here Congressional Letter of Inquiry, and it contains the following text:

"...the [State] Department's Deputy Chief of Staff, Huma Abedin, has three family members - her late father, her mother and her brother - connected to Muslim Brotherhood operatives and/or organizations..."

At this point we are unable to judge the veracity of these charges, but they certainly are a serious enough matter to demand a thorough investigation. There is at the very least, the appearance of great potential impropriety here.

For the record, though Abedin has been an aide to Mrs. Clinton for an extended period of time, she has never been thoroughly and publicly vetted. This must also be addressed, the sooner the better because presently Ms. Abedin has access to sensitive national security documents and is in daily communication with the United States' chief diplomat, making her privy to information which must remain sacrosanct.

Mr. McCain's self-serving actions today are inexcusable. He has, absent any real facts, made up his mind on the matter and used the occasion of his speech to publicly lambaste those who have initiated this process.

This inquiry is in its infancy and it deals with subject matter essential to the continued security of the United States and today Senator McCain attempted to cut that process off at the knees.

We have noted on numerous occasions Mr. McCain's penchant for making statements crafted to curry favor with a legacy media all too willing to harm the conservative movement.

This appears to be one of those moments and we find that deeply troubling.

Mr. McCain is powerless to halt this investigation, it's beyond his control. What he has done is add fuel to the considerable body of evidence which suggests that he is willing to do just about anything to advance himself politically even if it means throwing some of the few remaining brave conservatives in the GOP under the wheels of the ABC/CBS/NBC/MSNBC bus.

In short form he has irreparably harmed his own reputation, something which he can never undo.
