Obama's New Middle East Partner - The Muslim Brotherhood - Funded By Iran?

July 6, 2011

July 5, 2011 - San Francisco, CA - PipeLineNews.org - According to an AP story carried by Fox News [see, http://www.foxnews.com/world/2011/07/05/israels-military-intelligence-chief-iran-deepening-regional-influence/] Israel's intelligence chief, General Aviv Kochavi, briefed Israeli legislators today, indicating that as part of an Iranian push to increase its influence in the rapidly destabilizing Middle East, it is helping to fund Egypt's terrorist Muslim Brotherhood.

"The general said Iran is specifically trying to strengthen its relations with Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood ahead of planned September elections there and has begun funding the organization as well..."

In a March 16 piece [see, The Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas, Iran And Re-establishing The Caliphate] we noted that the Brotherhood had at that time already indicated that it's seeking deeper ties with Iran, so the report out of Israel today regarding funding the MB seems entirely plausible.

"The Muslim Brotherhood seeks unity between Muslims calling for justice, civil society and a free and fair political arena. As part of its strategy it engages with nations "like Iran" and groups - like Hamas - that would otherwise perhaps be ostracized, a move that would only isolate and inflate division and conflict...In this context, the Muslim Brotherhood has maintained informal ties with Iran for many years. Under the influence of the tolerant Brotherhood, Egyptians are more comfortable with Shiite Islam than other Sunnis in other Arab countries." Whether this information will make Team Obama any less reckless in its rapprochement with Egypt's revolutionary Islamists remains to be seen.
