Head of Shin Bet: Terrorism Threat High in and Around Jerusalem

January 18, 2011

January 18 2011- Militant Islam Monitor-Yuval Diskin, The head of the Shin Bet, the Israel Security Agency told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee that the terrorism threat remained high in and around Jerusalem .

He said that several East Jerusalem neighborhoods have in effect turned into PA regions and no go areas for the police despite the fact that the Arab residents carry Israeli ID cards.

According to Diskin:

"Some such neighborhoods are turning into lawless regions in which terrorists and PA Arabs who have illegally entered Jerusalem take refuge … adding that illegal building in those neighborhoods is very common." http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/141810

He said that 46 Israeli Arab citizens had been arrested in connection with terrorism in 2010 compared to 24 in 2009.

Diskin warned that the Sinai was becoming a base for terrorism.

He also stated that the Egyptians are doing too little to fight terrorism and could stop smuggling "in 24 to 48 hours" if they wanted to but that they were only interested in stopping these activities if it involved their national interests.
