Times Square Bomber Faisal Shahzad Pleads Guilty - "I Consider Myself a Mujahedeen and a Muslim Soldier"

June 21, 2010

June 21, 2010 - San Francisco, CA - PipeLineNew.org - Accused Times Square bombing suspect Faisal Shahzad, a Pakistani-American Muslim, today pleaded guilty in New York Federal District Court before judge Miriam Cedarbaum.

The most serious of the charges - attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction and an act of attempted terrorism transcending national boundaries - both carry mandatory life sentences.

Shahzad appeared petulant during the proceedings, at one point glaring while stating that he considered himself a "Muslim soldier," engaged in warfare against the United States.

Wearing a kufi-style skullcap, Shahzad wasn't reticent in claiming religious justification for his actions., "I want to plead guilty 100 times because unless the United States pulls out of Afghanistan and Iraq, until they stop drone strikes in Somalia, Pakistan and Yemen and stop attacking Muslim lands, we will attack the United States and be out to get them." [source, CNN, Shahzad Pleads Guilty to Times Square Bombing Charges, June 21, 2010, http://edition.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/06/21/new.york.times.square.bomb/?hpt=T1]

Conjecture abounds regarding the manner in which Shahzad's assertion - that his actions were consistent with Islamic theology - will be taken by the WH considering it has resolutely denied that jihadists are driven by Islam, to the point of officially banning words that might suggest otherwise.
