Shocked and Amazed - State Department Discovers That Iran Might be a Dictatorship

February 16, 2010 - San Francisco, CA - PipeLineNews.org - Given the negative direction American foreign policy has drifted in the space of a single year under team Obama, it would be foolish to underestimate this administration's witlessness.

That said, Secty of State Hillary Clinton's revelation today that "by gosh," Iran might not be democratic and it just might be heading towards dictatorship [military...led by the Revolutionary Guard Corp] is among the most vapid things yet to come out of team Obama.

That level of ignorance, at the same time demonstrates what a ridiculous choice Hillary Clinton was for Secty. of State.

Of course the problem goes much deeper than individual incompetency, it's systemic.

If her analysis holds any water at all, Hillary's thesis [no doubt signed off at the highest levels in the West Wing] must be based upon the proposition that since the creation of the Mullocracy in 1979, the Islamic dictatorship that has seemingly dominated the country for over 30 years now has actually been subject to the will of the people, exercised through the Iranian parliament.

As a result, it now comes apparently as a total shock to State that the legislature doesn't really call the shots in Iran, and this development might lend itself to a corresponding lack of freedom in the country.

One might have hoped that this crowd would have taken the hint, judging from the river of blood flowing in Tehran's streets, perhaps Mrs. Clinton and her oafish handlers need a brief history lesson.

In 1979 the Carter administration [the patron saint of the current DC brain-trust] created the Iranian Revolution, so let's lay the big egg in the appropriate nest, Barack and Hillary's party.

Bush, the so-called "dim-witted cowboy," has created the entire mess. In 1979 Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was a member of the Revolutionary Guard [the Basij militia], as are many other key power players in Iran.

The corps's alumni hold dozens of seats in Parliament and top government posts. Mr. Ahmadinejad is a former member, as are the speaker of Parliament, Ali Larijani, and the mayor of Tehran, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf." The Guard has been in service of the Islamic revolution from the beginning.

"From its very start, therefore, Islamic Republic law made the Revolutionary Guards not only a military organization deterring foreign threats but also a political-military organization tasked with fighting domestic opposition... The Islamic Republic leadership has continuously used the Guards to suppress internal dissent. Khomeini actively employed the Revolutionary Guards to coerce and, when necessary, crush former political allies as he consolidated power within the revolution's broad coalition." The Guard has historically micro-managed Iran's internal affairs, to the extent of even vetting local political candidates a function of the power hinted at by the groups' more formal designation, "The Army of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution."

It would have been impossible for the Mullahs, the faux civil government under Ahmadinejad and the Revolutionary Guard to have co-existed for this period of time had not their basic world view been identical.

"The July 25, 1981 issue of Payam-e Enghelab [note, the Guards official publication] defined "the two main tasks of the Guards" as "guarding the principle of government by the supreme jurist and the principle of jihad." Therefore, the article concluded, "the Guards cannot be robbed of a political dimension or ideological beliefs." [source, ibid]

One would hope that the State Department, Hillary Clinton and the man with his feet up on the desk in the oval Office, might have been aware of this information, that Iran is truly a revolutionary state, motivated by a sense of Islamic jihadism, and that regardless of how you characterize the regime, the impossibility of effectively dealing with it diplomatically should have been obvious.

Ditto the fact that the Revolutionary Guard has always served as the regime's attack dog and ultimate guarantor.

At this late stage in the game - when Iran has already declared that it can enrich uranium to 20% purity, that it intends to bring an additional 10 reactors on line shortly to speed the process of producing sufficient fissionable material, that it clearly envisions creating a nuclear arsenal the first target of which presumably will be Israel and after signing a deal with Hugo Chavez to not only secure more uranium ore but use Venezuela as the Southern anchor for a pincer move threatening the United States - to quibble over whether Iran is a military or a religious or secular dictatorship is so indicative of the sheer idiocy of this administration's foreign policy, that the very mentioning of it by Mrs. Clinton today in Lebanon [question, how did her hosts choke back the guffaws?] should instill genuine fear in any observer of these things as should this administration still clinging to the idea that the United Nations is anything but Iran's enabler and firewall.

Final note, this item just crossed the wires, "Prince Saud al-Faisal told a news conference in the Saudi capital that the threat posed by Iran's nuclear ambitions demands a more immediate solution than sanctions...The Saudi minister spoke at a joint appearance with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton...U.S. officials traveling with Clinton said privately they were uncertain what al-Faisal meant" [see, Saudi official questions new sanctions on Iran, http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100215/ap_on_re_mi_ea/ml_clinton_saudi_arabia_4].

It seems the Saudis not only get it but they have no aversions to embarassing Hillary in public [she's used to it my now] to drive home the point. The fact that the statement is considered undecipherable by the Foggy Bottom boys, provides all the punctuation necessary for the foregoing narrative.
