The 'bucket is full' for the party now that the Gay Paper has published a translation of cassette tapes in which one hears that Ramadan calls homosexuality an affliction and disorder. Ramadan works for the muncipality as an advisor. The Islamic researcher gets money for his learning chair and his activities in the city such as visits to districts and debates. In total the costs of Ramadan are 420.000 euro. He was put in place by the municipality to improve the dialogue between Muslims and non Muslims. Read also the Elsevier commentary "The two faces of Tariq Ramadan" That is reported by RTV Rijmond. Council member Bas van Tijn (VVD) said to the Gay Paper " You may make these kind of comments in Holland, but this is about someone who has gotten a position with government money. Who is nota bene paid by the municipality to improve the dialouge between groups in the society. Then such comments are unacceptable." The VVD wants the municipality to distance themselves from contact with Ramadan as quickly as possible. Investigation The city of Rotterdam has launched an investigation into the cassette tape where in Ramadan shall have made negative comments over homosexuals and women. Today the Gay Paper published an article where a verbatim translation is given of his comments. Many of the comments were already published by the French journalist Caroline Fourest. In 2004 her book Brother Tariq came out in which she documented the work of Ramadan. University The comments don't square with the comments he has made as advisor of the city of Rotterdam and as guest lecturer citizenship and identity at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. The university does not want to react and is waiting for the results of the investigation by the municipality of the 54 cassette tapes on which he is supposed to have made the reputed comments. ------------------------------------------------------------

Door Maartje Willems --------------------------------------- Commentary The two faces of Tariq Ramadan Did the university of Leiden bring in a Muslim fundamentalist? It sure looks like that. Excerpt: Behind the well spoken, erudite and friendly intellectual hides a fundamentalist in fact. In public Ramadan is a proponent of 'European Islam' but says in Arabic on cassette tapes to only respect the European laws if they don't go against his beliefs. He is also of two meanings over stoning and attacks by Islamic suicide terrorists. THE HAGUE, 20/03/09 Rotterdam Launches Investigation of Its Islam Advisor Rotterdam city council is launching an investigation of alleged anti-gay and anti-woman statements by Tariq Ramadan. This Islamic scientist advises the city on integration policy. Gay magazine Gay Krant yesterday published a translation of sound recordings of statements Ramadan is said to have made in a speech. He called homosexuality "a disturbance, a faulty functioning and an imbalance" and said on women that they must attract no attention by their appearance. "On the street, thus says the law, women must keep their eyes fixed on the pavement," the magazine quotes him as saying. Rotterdam says it wants access to the recordings as quickly as possible. This will allow the municipality itself to assess the statements of Ramadan, according to a spokeswoman of Participation Alderman Rik Grashoff. "These statements raise questions about statements Ramadan has made as advisor to Rotterdam municipality and as guest professor at the Erasmus University Rotterdam," according to the Gay Krant. Ramadan, "who charges an hourly fee of 290 euros," was recently re-appointed for two years as advisor to Grashof, according to the magazine. http://www.nisnews.nl/public/200309_2.htm |
