Aurora - An Aurora couple were indicted Thursday, accused of enslaving an Indonesian woman in their home for four years, forcing her to cook and clean without pay.

The husband also is accused of repeatedly sexually assaulting the woman, records show.

Residents of the well-kept neighborhood where Homaidan Al-Turki and Sarah Khonaizan lived with their four children said a team of heavily armed police surrounded the house and took the couple into custody last week.

Federal indictments handed up Thursday accuse the couple of keeping the woman in servitude to care for their children and perform other domestic chores without paying her.

She was intimidated

Sarah Khonaizan
with "aggravated sexual abuse," the indictment said. Al-Turki faces numerous sexual-assault charges in connection with the case, according to court records.

The Denver Post is withholding the name of the alleged victim because of the nature of the allegations.

A woman who lives across the cul-de-sac from the family said the couple were from Saudi Arabia and that the husband owned an Islamic bookstore. The neighbor said that many people would come and go from the house, in the 2000 block of South Joliet Court.

"They pretty much stayed to themselves," said the neighbor, Diana Zettlemoyer. "The curtains are always drawn. You don't see much of what's

going on."

Another neighbor said it was difficult to identify women around the house because most wore traditional Muslim clothing that concealed all but their eyes. However, she came to realize that a woman who would shovel snow out of the family's driveway was not the wife.

"Occasionally, there would be another woman who didn't seem like a sister shoveling snow," said the neighbor, who asked not to be identified. "It was not the mother."

Vicki Lisman, who also lives in the cul-de-sac, said an agent with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security had been canvassing the neighborhood.

She too was surprised to learn that another woman lived in the house.

"That just blows me away," Lisman said.

The indictment says Al-Turki, 36, and Khonaizan, 35, confiscated the woman's passport and visa, and forced her to work for them over a four-year period ending in November 2004.

A source close to the investigation said the woman lived in their basement while she was serving the family but that she now is living with friends.

Federal authorities are attempting to confiscate $92,700 from the couple's bank accounts, an amount authorities estimate the couple saved by not paying the woman for her work, the indictment said.

Jeff Dorschner, spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Colorado, declined to reveal how authorities became aware of the woman's situation.

John Richilano, lawyer for Al-Turki, could not be reached for comment Thursday. Jennifer Gedde, who represents Khonaizan, declined to comment on the charges, beyond saying they are "simply allegations."

Al-Turki and Khonaizan were in custody Thursday and face charges that could result in life imprisonment.

Indictment: Saudi Pair in Colo. Kept SlaveBy MELISSA TRUJILLO, Associated Press Writer

AURORA, Colo. -- A Saudi Arabian couple was in custody Friday, accused of turning a young Indonesian woman into a virtual slave, forcing her to clean, cook and care for their children while she was threatened and sexually assaulted.

A federal grand jury on Thursday indicted Homaidan Al-Turki, 36, and his wife, Sarah Khonaizan, 35, on charges of forced labor, document servitude and harboring an illegal immigrant.

-Turki also faces state charges including kidnapping, false imprisonment and extortion, as well as 12 charges of sexual assault. His wife faces some of the same charges. The two could be sentenced to life in prison if convicted.

Phone messages left Friday for their individual lawyers were not immediately returned.

U.S. Attorney's Office spokesman Jeff Dorschner said the Indonesian woman, who is in her 20s, came to the United States with the couple legally to perform domestic chores. But her U.S. visa was hidden from her by Al-Turki and Khonaizan, according to Thursday's indictment.

The woman was controlled by "a climate of fear and intimidation" that included sexual abuse and the belief that she would "suffer serious harm" if she did not perform her tasks, the indictment said.

The woman is believed to have lived with the couple from 2000 until November 2004, according to authorities. Dorschner said she is not in custody.

Authorities said the couple owed the woman nearly $93,000 in unpaid wages.

A neighbor, Vicki Lisman, said she believed the couple has four children -- three young girls and a teenage boy. In the summer, the mother and children would go to Saudi Arabia while the father stayed in Colorado, she said.

Lisman said she had no idea another woman lived with the family.

"There was certainly a sense of normalcy with the house and the family," she said.

Al-Turki worked at Al-Basheer Publications and Translation in Denver. No one answered the company's phone Friday.

MIM: The homepage of the Al Basheer publications website states that they publish the works of Sheik Jarabozo a radical Islamist cleric who worked toether with the Colorado based Islamic Assembly of North America. One of it's members, Bassem Khafagi, was also an associate of The Council on American Islamic Relations was jailed on terrorism charges.

Al-Basheer Publications & Translations began in 1417 Hijri, 1996 C.E. and is dedicated to publishing high quality books on Islam from only authentic sources. Our titles are by distinguished scholars from around the world. Most notably, we are the publisher for books written and translated by Sheikh Jamaal al-Din Zarabozo.

Al-Basheer Publications & Translations is dedicated to the spread of knowledge from the Aqeedah and Minhaj of Ahl us-Sunnah wa al-Jama'at. All of our books, tapes and other products that we publish and distribute have all be carefully researched to ensure quality and accuracy of content. May Allah guide us in this effort.

---------------------------------------------------------

MIM: Al Basheer primarily publishes the work of Jamaal Zarabozo, a cleric who was deemed even too radical by Islamists. The connection of Zarabozo to IANA which was based in Colorado indicates that Homaidan Al Turki and his book company are closely associated with the group . A series of investigative article on terrorism in America by Steven Emerson and others detailed Zarabozo's writings and work with the Colorado based Friday Report.http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/tribune-review/specialreports/jihad/s_84622.html

"...IANA ...incorporated in 1993 in Denver and listed directors in Colorado, Michigan, Missouri and Oregon. Its former president, Bassem Khafaji, an Egyptian then living in Denver, later sat on Assirat's international advisory board. (Note :Khafaji is now in jail)

IANA grew out of Dar Makkah, a dissolved Denver-based organization that published "The Friday Report." The publication included a compilation of fatwas issued by Muslim sheiks.

IANA follows an equally fundamentalist path on its "Fatwa Line," a toll-free phone service. One of the religious leaders its service highlights is Sheik Jamal Zarabozo, whose books are sold in IANA's Ypsilanti office.

Zarabozo's fatwas were frequently printed in the "The Friday Report" produced by IANA's predecessor, Dar Makkah.

In the past, Zarabozo has accused Muslim modernists of breaking Islamic principles by opposing the stoning of adulterers and the killing of "apostates." In another fatwa, he warned against visiting a Christian church to "watch people commit the greatest sin … You have no way of knowing what evil Satan may put into your heart by attending the gatherings wherein shirk (idolatry) is being committed."
