Rep. Wolf On Preventing American Jihadists From Returning To U.S.

August 29, 2014

August 28, 2014 – San Francisco, CA – PipeLineNews.org – Numerous sources are reporting that as many as 200 American citizens have traveled to Syria and Iraq to wage jihad.

This presents a deadly serious challenge to U.S. national security in that as citizens with valid passports, unless they can be identified as members of an FTO, they can freely re-enter the country where they can bring Islam's bloody religious war home.

In response, Congressman Frank Wolf [R-VA] is co-sponsoring a piece of legislation, H.R. 4223, the International Conflicts of Concern Act, which, if enacted, will prevent these people from returning so easily.

In a statement just released, Mr. Wolf said:

"We have already seen one example of an American suicide bomber who returned to Florida from Syria just months before driving a truck with explosives into a building. Incredibly, he traveled to and from Syria with impunity – because there are no restrictions on Americans going there. It is imperative that the U.S. take proactive steps to discourage Americans from travelling to Syria to link up with these groups. Currently, unless the U.S. has solid evidence that they have joined one of these terrorist groups, the FBI can't detain and arrest suspects upon their return…Equally important, the U.S. is not taking any substantial steps to discourage Americans from going over to fight – and these would-be fighters can see there is little price to pay for doing so. This is an untenable situation that puts our country at greater risk of attack from a radicalized American who trains and fights with these groups and later returns home.

…H.R. 4223, the International Conflicts of Concern Act…would give the president authority to temporarily restrict travel and material support to countries like Syria, where foreign fighters from the U.S. and Europe are linking up with ISIS and other foreign terrorist organizations. The president could also add additional countries of concern should this conflict spill over into other countries, like we have seen in Iraq…

This bill is a commonsense solution to a dangerous challenge that we face from groups like ISIS – groups that are seeking to recruit Americans to fight with them and potentially return to the U.S. to commit attacks…"

It's of vital concern that this matter be dealt with as soon as possible, the prospect of highly trained and motivated American citizens engaging in multiple acts of war against the United States is far too great a risk to take.
