Muslim Educational Fund shakedown/scam rejected by MCI executive who says she does 'not care for support' their cause
Fund founded at same time as incorporation of Benevolence Foundation by Adham Hassoun

MIM: The Muslim Educational Fund - becomes the Muhajideen Export Fund
The anatomy of a scam. When the MCI stood up to the Muslim Educational Fund and refused to become party to their scam the radical Islamists at MEF ranted and railed about " their outrageous attitude to the Muslim Education Fund and their attitude in general..."
Floridians gave $1.9 million dollars to alleged terror front group
ORLANDO -- Muslim charities suspected of helping finance international terrorism received at least $1.9 million in the past five years from Florida donors, records show.
Tax returns for the Illinois groups, reviewed by the Orlando Sentinel, show the three U.S.-based Muslim charities are linked through donations.
"It's a disaster," said Dr. Hamida Battla, a retired Windermere internist who has sent at least $20,000 since 1998 to Benevolence International Foundation of Palos Hills, Ill., to support 32 orphans from Afghanistan to Chechnya to China.
Investigators have not disclosed how terrorists might have benefited from money raised by Benevolence and Global Relief Foundation of nearby Bridgeview, Ill.
The two groups are under investigation for financial links to al-Qaida and other extremist groups, Treasury spokeswoman Tasia Scolinos said.
The groups have denied any links to terrorist groups.
The government also contends a nine-year investigation turned up links between Palestinian militants and Holy Land Foundation for Relief & Development of Richardson, Texas.
Together, the charities collected $62 million nationwide since 1996.
Twenty-six people, mostly doctors, and a handful of corporations from Florida gave at least $1.9 million to Global Relief and Benevolence since 1996, according to Illinois state records that list donors of $5,000 or more.
The largest concentration, $1.3 million, came from 15 current and former doctors connected to Oak Hill Hospital in Brooksville, about 50 miles north of Tampa.
One of the biggest single contributors was International Charity Network, a Winter Park company that gave $300,000 to Benevolence in 1996 and 1997 alone. Two other related local firms have given Benevolence a total of $171,210 since 1996.
Roger Simmons, a Maryland attorney for Global Relief, said charity officials are in the dark about the government action.
"I don't know what triggered it," said Simmons, who also is representing the charity in a $125 million lawsuit filed last month in Chicago that accuses six media outlets of defaming the charity in news reports.
Battla, a retired Veterans Affairs doctor, said she called the group several times in recent months to verify it was not on a government "watch list" before making a $1,000 donation. She said she donated out of concern for children living in difficult conditions.
Illinois records show Brooksville orthopedic surgeon Imad "Ed" Tarabishy was the most generous Florida benefactor of Global Relief and Benevolence in the past five years, giving at least $796,600.
More than a dozen other current and former physicians at Brooksville's Oak Hill Hospital, where Tarabishy is on staff, gave another $521,750.
That included $110,000 from Tarabishy's brother, a Florida-licensed surgeon who practices in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Tarabishy said Friday he was angered his personal donations to the charity has been publicly disclosed and said he did nothing wrong in trying to help those in need. He said he knew no more of the charities than anyone else donating through a church or other organization would.
"Every penny I ever paid, I paid to a United States approved, tax-deductible charity," Tarabishy said.
"There is no more place that is more hungry, where people are more sick and in more need that those people. They are human beings like me and you. I don't know where things go wrong sometime, but the bottom line is they are very, very needy human beings."
Major corporate donors for the charities have been the International Charity Network of Winter Park and two affiliated entities, MEF Marketing Inc. and the Muslim Education Foundation.
Ammar Charani, whose family runs the phone, telemarketing and internet companies, said much of the money was raised from a long-distance calling program that allowed customers to designate up to 5 percent of their monthly bills to the charities of their choice.
University of Central Florida traffic-engineering professor Haitham Al-Deek is listed along with the top officers on Holy Land tax returns in 1997 and 1998.
Al-Deek's attorney, Mark NeJame, said his client gave money to Holy Land and donated time to review scholarship applications. He was surprised to see his name on IRS records and may sue to recover his donations if the charity helped finance terrorism, NeJame said.
Raed Awad, the former religious leader at the Al-Iman mosque in Fort Lauderdale, once served as the chief fund-raiser for Holy Land in Florida but also collected funds around the Caribbean and Latin America.
"The FBI has been investigating this organization since 1992, and every time, they've come up with nothing," Awad said.
MIM: Anatomy of a scam - these postings on Google reveal how the Muslim Educatonal Front was used to intimidate the MCI phone company .When MCI company official Gallagher refused to go along with the scam, and stood her ground , the Muslims, accused them of being anti Muslim and threatened the company with a loss of business . It should be noted that the group which mastermined this scheme includes well known radical Islamists. Most notably , Jamal Said, Imam of the Bridgeview Mosque Foundation who is a known member of the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas, and Dawoud Zwink, who is associated with the Muslim Boy Scout movement and a 'charity' which was closed down for providing funds to Al Qaeda. Steven Emerson described s visit to Jamal Said and the Bridgeview Mosque in his book 'American Jihad'.

Muslim Education Foundation --------------------------- June 8, 1992 Dear brothers and sisters: Assalamu Alaikum.
Muslim Education Foundation (MEF) is a non-profit organization that is established for providing Islamic education in America. MEF is introducing a new concept of fund raising, "Contribute without Donating".
Dr. Jamal Badawi describes it: "It is a means of pooling together muslim's purchasing power in order to earn an income that can be used to help the muslim community in North America. Your risk is next to nothing, while the potential benefit is immense."
Our first project is a contract to switch muslims' long distance services to MCI. MEF will get back 5% of the long distance bill at NO COST to you, and you will get: -MCI quality long distance programs. -20% Discount of Friends & Family (Even to an overseas number). -$9.00 Certificate for long distance usage. -No change to your lines or dialing methods. -MCI will pay to switch you back to any carrier if you're not totally satisfied after 30 days. -The best of all, Allah's blessings for every time you use your phone.
The money collected will be spent on local and national Islamic projects under the supervision of MEF boards. MEF has on its boards trusted scholars and community leaders such as: Dr. Jamal Badawi Dr. Muzammil Siddiqi Dr. Imtiaz Ahmad Maulana Muhammad Naseem Imam Siraj Wahaj Dr. Ahmad Sakr Dr. Muhammad Yunus Shaikh Jamal Said Br. Ahmad Al-Hattab Br. Dawood Zwink Br Mohammad Akram Adlouni Br Ammar Charani
Allah says, "And help each other to do good and be God fearing." In order to keep our high return we need at least 5,000 participants in the next three months. Your participation will set the example needed for the Muslims all over the United Sates.
All you need to do is: -Pick up a form -Fill out the information needed. -Sign and return to MEF.
May Allah make all our efforts for His sake, and may Allah give you the best rewards. ----------------------------------------------- MEF P.O. Box 1100, Goldenrod, FL 32733 Tel: (407) 333-9779, 1-800- 288-3633, FAX: (407) 333-9954
you should be able to get forms for your community from the above telephone number, In-sha'Allah.
please post the flyer in your Mosque - tell your Muslims Brs and Srs not on the net - try to get as many involved as possible.
unfortunately if your already on MCI then I think the only way you can get the money to go to MEF is to switch carriers for a month and then come back to MCI - if someone knows of an easier way please tell us.
Assalam Alaikum dear Muslims, I am posting an artice that appeared in this Friday's newletter of MCA in Santa Clara. It is regarding MCI's outrageous attitude towards the Muslim Education Fund Program and their attitude in general.
This is not the first time MCI has turned back on their promise. I have signed up with them one, but they never really deliver what they promise. I have had bad lines, bill that caould not be disputed with ease, and a great deal of headaches since I had signed up. But way before this incident, I had already changed back to ATT just for their better service, and clearer lines.
Please support the cause below.
May Allah rewared all of you for what you have done.
After one year of a successful long distance program, with many sacrifices and long distance calls, MEF is no longer asking Muslims to switch to MCI residential services. To our surprize only 700 of the thousands of members were accepted by MCI into the program. With expenses over $150,000 MEF only received partial commission through March of 1993.
After investigating the numerous unfairly rejected customers, many were just rejected for silly reasons like no one at home, didn't speak the language, or spoke Mandarin!!.
Due to poor MCI handling of this residential program, members complaints mounted; many question why they were not included in the program or why money generated was so little.
MEF decided to get to the bottom of this and spoke to an MCI top Manager, Ms. Jeri Galloway, who said that she DID NOT CARE a bit about this program, and we do not need to contact her again. She further stated, "I don't like this program."
We then took all complaints to other MCI top executives. After hundreds of phone calls, faxes, and messages left for these executives, including the president of MCI, Ms. Galloway was forced to meet with us in Orlando. This meeting was a nightmare. She shamelessly said again that she does not care nor support our cause, and MCI has no interest in our market. When we told her that this type of attitude and poor customer service will result in all Muslims switching to another long distance company and they will never consider MCI again for their residential services, she simply said, "I DON'T CARE." When asked for reasons why MCi would not address our concerns especially that we have great customers with high usage and good loyalty, she said, "I don't have to explain anything to you, it's a decision I already took, and I am ready to face the consequences."
Well. Ms. Galloway, you lost our market. A consequence that may cost MCI hundreds of thousands of loyal customers. Maybe these consequences weren't really what she had in mind. AlhamduLillah the MEF concept of Muslim purchasing power is developing and gaining ground among Muslims in America. We were even recognized by the leading long distance company, AT&T. Now, when were are done, no Muslim will ever join Ms. Galloway's MCI residential program. Ms. Galloway even had the nerve to insult a Sister who embraced Islam from the crutches of Catholicism by telling her that the POPE WILL BE ANGRY WITH HER. The MEF Director told her that her attitude was one of bigotry, discrimination, and anti-Muslim. It was a hard day at MEF. Allah says,
"And you might dislike something and it's better for you, and you might like something and it's bad for you. And Allah knows and you know not."
AT&T is MEF's choice -------------------- During the time, our negotiations with AT&T were picking up. After submistting our market potential studies, action plans, and documentation of our expertise over the past two years with the MEF program, AT&T showed a great interest in our market and and our cause.
In contrast with MCI, in a meeting with the executive director of MEF, brother Ammar Charani, and the top management of AT&T, AT&T expressed their support to our cause of advancing education in America. The friendliness and compassion they showed for our program is really admirable, and it only made sense to them to give a better offer than MCI, with better customer service, a better product, and a promise of a great future.
Any customer who joins this program who has long distance phone usage over $25, whether he/she is an existing customer of an MCI or Sprint customer, who comes to AT&T through through MEF, 5% of his/her international and domestic long distance bill will come back to an organization of his choice(local Masjid, School, reklief or national organization, etc.) In addition, those who switch from another carrier to AT&T will receive $25.
This deakl does not go without a challenge. Our challenge is to get 150,000 customers nationwide to join this program with atleast 45,000 of them new customers.
With 150,000 members Muslims will generate $7,020,000 per year for their local and national projects. The initial reaction of the organizations, centers, and individuals has been very positive and one of enthusiasm. We as a Muslim community in North America, can reach this target easily by each one of us joining this program and taking it as his/her responsibility to sign up 10 or more of his Muslim brothers or sisters.

With 150,000 members Muslims will generate $7,020,000 per year for their local and national projects. The initial reaction of the organizations, centers and individuals has been very positive and one of enthusiasm. We, as a Muslim community in North America, can reach this target easily by each one of us joining this program and taking it as his responsibility to sign up 10 more of his Muslim brothers or sisters. "Allah will support those who support his cause"
