The principal Palestinian Authority's religious leader, the Mufti Muhammad Hussein, presented last week the killing of Jews by Muslims as a religious Islamic goal.

Hussein made the comments at an event celebrating the 47th anniversary of the founding of the Fatah movement, which is headed by PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas. He cited the Hadith (Islamic tradition attributed to Muhammad) saying that "the Hour [of Resurrection] will not come until you fight the Jews. The Jew will hide behind stones or trees. Then the stones or trees will call: ‘Oh Muslim, servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him.'"

The event was broadcast on PA TV, translated by the Palestinian Media Watch (PMW) research institute and presented on its website.

The moderator who introduced the Mufti at the Fatah event reiterated another Islamic belief: that the Jews are the descendants of apes and pigs.

"Our war with the descendants of the apes and pigs (i.e., Jews) is a war of religion and faith," the moderator said.

The Mufti did not distance himself from this hate statement that Islam is in a religious war with the Jews, but added to it that Islam's goal is to kill Jews.

PMW noted that this is not the first time the Mufti has incited to hatred against Jews in the name of Islam. In a sermon at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in 2010, he preached that the Jews are the "enemies of Allah."

The Mufti is appointed by none other than Abbas, who also heads the Fatah movement, PMW said.

Peres: Muslim Cleric's Incitement Endangers Jews Peres warns that incitement from Jerusalem's top cleric endangers the lives of Jews, Justice Minster promises to investigate.

Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu

President Shimon Peres said Monday that the Jerusalem Mufti's recent "Kill the Jews" statements "endanger the lives" of Jews and that action must be taken to prevent similar remarks, which he said can lead to a deterioration of relations between Jews and Arabs.

He met with Justice Minister Yaakov Ne'eman, who promised an investigation of the sermon by Mohammed Hussein.

The Muslim clerics said at a rally two weeks ago, "The hour of judgment will not come until you fight the Jews. The Jew will hide behind the stone and behind the tree. The stone and the tree will cry, 'Oh Muslim, Oh Servant of God, this is a Jew behind me, come and kill him.'"

He since has said hew as not calling for the murder of Jews but simply was reading Muslim text that is traditionally attributed to the Prophet Mohammed.

Palestinian Authority religious affairs minister Mahmoud al-Habash also rejected any idea that the cleric was inciting Arabs against Jews and said, "we believe in peace." He explained that the Mufti's quote of the text was only referring to destiny.

Neither he nor Hussein explained the introduction of the cleric at the rally by a man who said, "Our war with the descendants of the apes and pigs is a war of religion and faith. Long live Fatah!."

A-G Orders Criminal Investigation into Mufti's Remarks

Attorney General Weinstein asks police to launch a criminal investigation into anti-Jewish statements made by the Mufti of Jerusalem.

Elad Benari

Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein decided on Tuesday to launch a criminal investigation into the statements made by the Mufti of Jerusalem, Sheikh Muhammad Hussein, against Jews.

At a recent event marking the 47th anniversary of PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement, Hussein said that the killing of Jews by Muslims is a religious Islamic goal. The event was broadcast on PA TV, translated by the Palestinian Media Watch (PMW) research organization and presented on its website.

Channel 10 News reported that in a letter he sent to police, Weinstein requested that a criminal investigation on suspicion of incitement to violence and racism be opened against the Mufti. The Justice Ministry said in a statement that the decision to request an investigation on the subject was made after an initial examination of the statements attributed to the Mufti.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu earlier this week asked the Attorney General's Office to open an investigation into the comments. Netanyahu said that the comments were "a serious crime that all nations must condemn."

President Shimon Peres said that the statements "endanger the lives" of Jews and that action must be taken to prevent similar remarks, which he said can lead to a deterioration of relations between Jews and Arabs.

He met with Justice Minister Yaakov Ne'eman, who promised an investigation of the sermon.

The Mufti denied this week that he called for genocide of Jews. In an interview with an Egyptian media outlet, Hussein claimed that "sentences were cut from my speech" and added that "Islam calls for respect of all human beings. I am amazed that these comments were attributed to me."

Jerusalem Mufti's Call to Kill Jews "Unsurprising"
Due to "Arab Spring," Arab leaders more likely to express unabashed anti-Semitism, says JCPA senior researcher, Lt. Col Halevi. Rachel Hirshfeld

On January 9th, at an event marking the 47th anniversary of the founding of Fatah, Mohammed Hussein, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, vehemently called for the killing of Jews. He declared, "The hour of judgment will not come until you fight the Jews… The Jews will hide behind the stone and behind the tree. The stone and the tree will cry, ‘Oh Muslim, Oh Servant of God, this is a Jew behind me, come and kill him.'"

While the Grand Muftis of Jerusalem, since before the establishment of the State of Israel, including Mohammad Amin al-Husayni, Hussam Al-din Jarallah, Sulaiman Ja'abari and Sa'id Sabri have all shared an ideology rooted in vicious anti-Semitism, Mufti Mohammed Hussein has, more or less, taken a back seat, refraining from publically expressing such vile beliefs.

However, Lt. Col. Jonathan Halevi, senior researcher of the Middle East and radical Islam at the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs told Arutz 7, he is "not surprised" by these recent remarks, "The Mufti undoubtedly knew that his statements were going to be heard and yet, chose to make them anyway."

HaLevy noted that with the "success" of the so-called Arab Spring, which has become what has been called by many the "Arab Winter", that the Middle East continues "down a path of destabilization, radicalization and Islamization."

"Israel is no longer able to find an ally in either Egypt or Turkey and finds itself increasingly ostracized in an unstable and unfriendly neighborhood," HaLevy said. "Subsequently, Arab leaders, who seek to restore the dignity and honor to the Muslim religion, no longer feel the need to refrain from outwardly expressing their ideology, rooted in unabashed anti-Semitism."

Friday marks International Holocaust Remembrance Day. While the Jewish people never lack enemies who call for their destruction and obliteration, HaLevy emphasized the importance of "understanding their tactics and methods so that we can more accurately understand, diagnose and combat the challenges that lie ahead."
