Team Obama Giving Taliban Keys To The Store

June 20, 2011

June 20, 2011 - San Francisco, CA - PipeLineNews.org - In a desperate effort to secure a smoke and mirrors peace in Afghanistan, the Obama Administration is seriously negotiating with elements of the Taliban, thus immeasurably increasing their stature and ultimate importance.

The end game this policy represents is a total negation of Obama's own words when he claimed in a two-part interview with Fox's Bill O'Reilly, "I can say we will defeat al Qaeda and that the Taliban will not be retaking Afghanistan..."

By "negotiating" with the Taliban, Team Obama is actually guaranteeing its survival and continued vitality. Under such a forced U.S. withdrawal either the already faltering central government will immediately fall or a more deadly civil-war will ensue. Either prospect is unthinkable against the sacrifice of blood and honor which constitutes America's 10 year presence in the country.

These dog-and-pony-show negotiations are designed almost exclusively for U.S. consumption, so as to allow candidate Obama to disingenuously claim that he ended the war on terms favorable to the U.S.

Of course nothing could be further from the truth.

It's the Obama administration which has ensured the political resurgence of the Taliban through its lack of commitment to conducting a real war against it so that it can take what this group of amateurs feels is the expedient route, and vacate Dodge asap. The constant undercutting of Hamid Karzai, the U.S.' hand-picked chief of state has forced him into negotiating with people to whose historic lack of forbearance he and his countrymen will be left, when the last American soldier departs. At the same time it scrambled Afghanistan's internal politics through injudicious meddling, the administration also denied [Obama's handpicked] American ground commander sufficient troops for a successful war and then pulled the surge's architect, General Petraeus, out of the country and chained him to a desk in DC.

The bottom line here is that Obama's actions guarantee that the Taliban will continue to be a source of concern for national security planners long after we are forced to slink out of the country. If this isn't handing an eventual total victory to the Taliban - and consigning Afghanistan to the group's tender mercies - it's indistinguishable from the real thing.
