Amsterdam Police Chief Would Refuse to Enforce Burqa Ban

January 5, 2011

January 5, 2011 - San Francisco, CA - PipeLineNews.org - The head of the Dutch Freedom Party Geert Wilders has called upon the Chief of Police in Amsterdam to enforce the law or resign. Bernard Welten announced on a television program that if a burqa ban were to be implemented he would practice civil disobedience and not arrest anyone breaking the law.

Other politicians have also reacted furiously to Welten's comments and urged Security and Justice Minister Opstelten to make Welten retract his statements or resign.

A spokesperson for Welten said his remarks must be seen in context and that the burqa ban was not yet in place. [source, translation by author, Wilders - Welten Must Resign, De Telegraaf, http://www.telegraaf.nl/binnenland/8652997/___Welten_moet_biezen_pakken___.html]

The Mayor of Amsterdam, Eberhard van der Laan, has expressed support for Welten who so far, has refused to reconsider his comments.
