Ex GITMO Detainees On Verge Of Receiving Windfall Payment From Brits

November 16, 2010

November 16, 2010 - San Francisco, CA - PipeLineNews.org - According to Britain's ITV News [see, http://www.itv.com/news/guantanamo-compensation91840/] Downing Street appears to be on the verge of paying millions of pounds to ex-Guantanamo Bay detainees in an effort to settle pending lawsuits filed against the government, "The Government has confirmed it will make payments to former detainees held at Guantanamo Bay. It comes after ITV news revealed one former detainee is in line to receive more than £1 million."

The effort is seen to have face saving, national security as well as economic implications in that a long public trial might reflect poorly on the government and reveal state secrets in a judicial proceeding in which all the cards seem stacked against the defendant.

An independent, public inquiry is anticipated to further sort out allegations that British security officials knew beforehand that the detainees would suffer harsh treatment during their incarceration because of the nature of the charges.
