San Diego Resident Arrested, Charged With Aiding Al-Shabab Terror Group

November 16, 2010

November 15, 2010 - San Francisco, CA - PipeLineNews.org - Without disclosing much in the way of clarifying information, the DOJ has charged Nima Ali Yusuf, 24 of San Diego with conspiring to provide material aid to the Somali terrorist group al-Shabab.

Al-Shabab was designated as a international terrorist group in 2008 by the State Department. The group has been a key participant in Somalia's ongoing civil war and controls significant portions of the impoverished African country, making the conflict now a religious war. The group is believed to be closely affiliated with al-Qaeda, with ties to Saudi nationals.

Yusuf joins a growing list of Somali immigrants who have become radicalized in their adopted country, with as many as two dozen having already left the United States to join al-Shabab's Somali jihad.

The center of this activity had been in the Minneapolis area where there is an already existing heavy concentration of Muslims, but recently San Diego has come into focus, with 3 residents having been arrested on similar charges earlier this month [see, http://www.pipelinenews.org/index.cfm?page=shabab11.3.10%2Ehtm].
