Afghan Crisis - Top Defense Chiefs Call For As Many As 30,000 More Troops

August 4, 2009 - San Francisco, CA - PipeLineNews.org - Against the backdrop of a shocking increase in terrorist activity in Afghanistan reflected in July having been the deadliest month in the entire war, U.S. defense chiefs including Def Secty. Gates, CENTCOM Cmdr. David Petraeus and Gen. Michael Mullen, Chair of the Joint Chiefs, have come to the decision that a huge swell in troop strength is needed to avoid disaster.

The defense experts called for an additional 4 to 6 brigades [min 12,000 max 30,000 troops] to deal with the rapidly degrading state of security in Afghanistan.

The news comes at possibly the least opportune time, with team Obama mired in the messy health care debacle, an increasingly skeptical public and the prospect of a rapidly deteriorating Iraq, potentiated by Obama's hasty withdrawal.

The size of brigades vary by service and function, currently a Marine Regimental Combat Team serves the same function as an Army brigade and numbers approximately 5,000 troops. http://www.pipelinenews.org/index.cfm?page=afghan8.4.09%2Ehtm
