MIM: Several weeks ago Dutch emergency personeel were threatened with death by Morrocans when they tried to aid the victim of a stabbing. Amsterdam Mayor Cohen had proclaimed that "the violence comes mainly from Morrocans". An editorial in the NRC Handelsblad asked if he was right to do so.

This morning the free paper Metro opened with this news: Cohen: "Agression comes mainly from Morrocans". This news came in the reaction of the Amsterdam Mayor, yesterday, to an incident in the city whereby ambulance personeel were hindered from doing their job. Ambulance workers stopped worked for several hours after several of them were threatened by spectators on Wednesday around 6 oclock when they went to deal with a stabbing in West Amsterdam. By the incident in West Amsterdam a 15 year old was critically injured, when he was stabbed by someone else from the neighborhood. Several very emotional people among them the family of the victim, threatened the helpers with death.They told the ambulance personeel what they would do to them if the wounded boy didnt survive. According to the police the spectators wanted to know the name of the perpetrator from the victim.
Yesterday Cohen said in an explicit reaction that the agression against the ambulance personeel mainly came from Morrocans. He concluded that "in many cases when this kind of threatening behaviour takes place, it is involving our Morrocan fellow citizens, in a large amount of the cases from Morrocan boys. Cohen said further: There is a problem there, in that community, the problem must be solved".
Several hours after Cohen said this, ambulance personeel in Amsterdam once again had to face violence. A 78 year old foreign born man hit a nurse who had just treated him.
Do you find it okay that Cohen explicitly pointed to the Morrocans. Or did he in your eyes thereby stimulate an unnecessary stigmatisation of the group?

Verwees Cohen terecht naar Marokkaanse jochies?
Vanmorgen opende het gratis ochtendblad Metro met het bericht: Cohen : Agressie komt vooral van Marokkaan. Het bericht ging in op de reactie van de Amsterdamse burgemeester, gisteren, op een incident in de hoofdstad waarbij ambulancepersoneel werd gehinderd bij de uitoefening van zijn taken. Ambulancemedewerkers legden enkele uren hun werk neer nadat woensdag rond een uur of zes enkele van hen waren bedreigd door omstanders, toen zij een slachtoffer van een steekpartij in Amsterdam-West wilden verzorgen.
Bij het incident in Amsterdam-West raakte een 15-jarige jongen zwaargewond, toen hij tijdens een ruzie werd neergestoken door een buurtgenoot. Enkele zeer geëmotioneerde mensen, onder wie familieleden van het slachtoffer, bedreigd en de hulpverleners met de dood. Zij zeiden het ambulancepersoneel wat aan te zullen doen, als de gewonde het niet zou overleven.
Volgens de politie wilden de omstanders van het slachtoffer de naam van de dader weten. Cohen zei gisteren in een reactie expliciet dat de agressie jegens de ambulancemedewerkers vooral van Marokkanen komt. Hij constateerde ,,in veel van de gevallen waarin dit soort bejegening plaatsvindt , dat er sprake is van onze Marokkaanse medeburgers, van Marokkaanse jochies, in een groot aantal gevallen". Cohen zei verder: ,,Daar ligt het probleem en daar, in die gemeenschap, moet het probleem worden opgelost."
Enkele uren nadat Cohen dit had gezegd, kreeg ambulance personeel in Amsterdam overigens opnieuw te maken met geweld. Een 78-jarige - autochtone - man sloeg een verpleegkundige die hem zojuist had geholpen. Vindt u het terecht dat Cohen expliciet verwees naar de Marokkanen?
