Three more men appeared in court today in connection with the alleged plot to blow up transatlantic passenger jets.

Nabeel Hussain, 22, of Chingford, east London, 25-year-old Mohammed Yasar Gulzar, of Barking, east London, and Mohammed Shamin Uddin, 35, of Stoke Newington, north London, were charged with conspiracy to murder and intending to smuggle explosives on to aircraft.

The men spoke only to confirm basic details about their identities during the hearing at City of Westminster magistrates court.

A bail application on behalf of Mr Hussain was refused. No bail application was made on behalf of either Mr Uddin or Mr Gulzar.

The three men were remanded in custody until September 4, when they will appear at the Old Bailey. They were among 24 people arrested by police investigating the alleged bomb plot earlier this month.

Detectives have until this evening to decide whether to charge or release five people still in custody, or to seek a further extension to question them.

A total of 14 people have been charged in relation to the alleged plot. A 17-year-old youth was accused of a terrorism offence not related to the alleged plot, and four people were released without charge.

Mr Hussain, Mr Gulzar and Mr Uddin were alleged to have "conspired with other persons to murder other persons" between January 1 and August 10 this year.

They were also charged with a new offence of preparing an act of terrorism under the Terrorism Act 2006.

It was alleged the men "engaged in conduct to give effect to their intention to smuggle the component parts of improvised explosive devices on to aircraft and assemble and detonate them on board".

Mr Hussain's brothers, Umair Hussain and Mehran Hussain, were earlier charged in connection with the alleged plot.

Both were accused under the Terrorism Act 2000 of failing to disclose information about Nabeel Hussain. Umair Hussain was remanded in custody until Friday, while Mehran Hussain will next appear in court on September 19.

Yesterday, the mother of an eight-month-old baby appeared in court charged in connection with the alleged plot.

Cossar Ali, 24, of Walthamstow, east London, was accused of failing to disclose information which might be of "material assistance" in preventing her husband, Ahmed Abdullah Ali - who was also charged in connection with the alleged plot - from the commission of a terrorist act. She was remanded in custody for one week.

Another of the 24 people originally arrested in connection with the investigation appeared in court yesterday on a terrorism charge.

The 17-year-old, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, is accused of an offence under Section 58(1)(b) of the Terrorism Act 2000. It is a standalone charge that does not relate to the alleged conspiracy.

The charge alleges that the teenager had in his possession a book on improvised explosive devices, suicide notes and wills with the identities of persons prepared to commit acts of terror, and a map of Afghanistan.

His lawyer, Gareth Peirce, indicated he would be pleading not guilty. An application for bail was refused, and the youth was remanded in custody until September 19.
