Manifestations of Evil and Death - by Emerson Vermaat author of " De Hofstadgroep "

Emerson Vermaat is the first person who has done an in depth study of the Hofstadgroep, whose members were behind the killing of filmmaker Theo Van Gogh. Vermaat dedicated his book on "De Hofstadgroep" to the parents and relatives of Theo van Gogh. He plans to publish english edition of the book in 2006 which will include information from the trial of Hofstadgroep members which is scheduled to take place in December 2005.

In 1993 I was in the area of the Bosnian Serbs in the former Yugoslavia for the second time. The war was in full swing. Half a year before I had taken pictures of a Serbian death squad with a small camera. A group of men rode with a small khaki green army truck with an completely intact skeleton on the front, probably from a woman. It was horrible to see. The men in the truck looked very pleased, as if they had completed a holy mission. They must have had the skeleton with them for while, it was probably that of the victim of an ethnic cleansing operation. When I was in another part of Bosnia, a Serb gave me a kind of emblem which must have belonged to one of the death squads. There was a death's head on it and a text underneath: Svoboda ili smrt ('freedom or death').

What happened there in Bosnia at that time - I was also twice in Sarajevo when it was under siege by Serbs -made me think of what the Nazis did to the Jews: Large scale deportations, mass murder, blowing up of mosques, mass executions of helpless residents, and in Northern Bosnia, where I also was,they were beginning to build actual concentration camps, ( it was partially due to the negative publicity and shocking photos of emaciated men that the Bosnian Serbs could not finalize their plans of course the Holocaust,- Hitler's plans to exterminate the Jews- was a unique historical tragedy not comparable to anything else in history. But when it comes to genocidal policies and practices, there are also a number of similarities to what the Nazis did. Evil, unfortunately, did not vanish after 1945.
As Carl Gustave Jung (with whom I disagree on may points but not on this), put it in 1945: 'No, the demons are not banished, that is the difficult task that still lies ahead. Now that the angel of history has abandoned the Germans, the demons will seek a new victim".

Muslims and Croats were also guilty of war crimes, but the Serbs were undoubtably the worst. Death and destruction was the real goal of Hitlers 'Third Reich'. Hitler's SS specifically chose the death's head as symbol for all of their operations and that was not coincidental. It was about, as later in Bosnia, a mingling of evil. The last book in the New Testament, The Apocalypse, touches on this .There is talk about dictatorships and evil with a contempt for everything human. It refers to for example, 'a horse, sickly pale; The same book also says: 'Woe to you, earth and sea, for the Devil has come down on you in great fury, knowing that time is short!' (Revelation 12: verse 12, New English Bible). This last part brings to mind Adolph Eichman, who, even when he knew that Germany was losing the war in the last year of the Third Reich,sent as many Jews as possible to the death camps. Even trains which were urgently needed by the German army for transporting troops were designated for these death transports.'The devil has descended upon you in great rage...'

The quiet and bureaucratically inclined Eichmann was in fact a man possessed. He harbored a blind hatred towards the Jewish and Christian religions.He had a demonic mission. And we must not think that such people belong to the past. There were also mass murderers after 1945, think of someone like Pol Pot in Cambodia,think of Radko Mladic in Bosnia, think of the mass killings and orgy of violence which took place in Rwanda where nothing was done to stop it. There are quite a few Muslim extremists who greatly admire Hitler. In Egypt someone wrote that he found it a pity that Hitler had not finished the job of exterminating the Jews.In Iraq scores of suicide commandos sow death and destruction everywhere.In 2005 a suicide bomber in Baghdad killed at least 24 children who were gathered around American soldiers who were giving out candy. In Kirkuk the Norh of Iraq a ten year old boy blew himself up.

What motivates such individuals? Nothing except death and destruction! What drives someone like Abu Mousab Al Zarqawi and Osama Bin Laden? For them what counts is : The more deaths - that much more joy - it doesn't matter if Muslims are also included. It brings to mind to mind to the fanaticism of Eichmann.It is an evident conglomeration of evil which manifests itself at a certain period in history. It is also a struggle of the spirits, the spirits of life against the spirit of death the last being SEEN in the Bible and the age old Judeo - Christian tradition (church of the 1st century) which were labelled 'demons' or 'people possessed by demonic forces' which could take over someone. This does not in any way reduce the personal guilt and reponsibility of such people.According to Christian tradition all the war criminals,mass murderers, and cruel tyrants, will be confronted with judgement either in this life or the hereafter.

During the trial of Mohammed Bouyeri, the killer of Theo Van Gogh, I noted that he had chosen death as his central theme in all of his public letters and writings. 'I know for certain that you o America ...o Europa...o Netherlands...,will go under...' 'Baptised in blood...this is my last word'. 'Clusters of clouds of death are gathering above your land'. In the sixties and seventies there were Satanic sects in California (in the Judeo-Christian tradition Satan, or the Devil is seen as 'the evil one' who opposes everything which is God intended to be good and harmonious, who called themselves followers of Satan, and in their liturgy (not seldom a death ritual), also choose death as their central theme.

When Mohammed Bouyeri murdered Theo Van Gogh, in his eyes he completed a ritual act,a ritual slaughter. He shot first and then thrust two large knives into the body of Theo Van Gogh, tried to cut off his head from his trunk, and stared for a long time at the body of his his victim. He laughed inside himself, and walked calmly away as a satisfied person, hoping that the police would shoot him dead. Later the police found a cd -rom in his house with horrific pictures of beheadings, public amputations, and sex with a woman's corpse.

After the failed attack on Hitler in 1944, he had the perpetrators arrested and he enjoyed the films which were made of the horrific way in which several of them, were killed after a mock trial. (The ringleader, Count Klaus von Stauffenberg had already been executed.)

In 'The anatomy of Human Destructiveness', Erich Fromm describes how perverse minds feel themselves drawn to death and to acts with corpses or dying people. He regards 'the malignant agression' of Hitler as 'een clinical case of necrophilia'. Freud has also pointed to the death instinct being closely connected to the sex instinct. As concerns contemporary suicide terrorists it is also a case of sexual instinct: Directly after death they hope that they will be rewarded with 72 virgins in paradise. The moment of blowing oneself up is a moment of ultimate pleasure, which can be compared to an orgasm.

With California satanists it is often a case of ritual paired with sexual instinct. One of the leaders of such a sect, Charles Manson, once said: "Death is peace from the world's madness and paradise im my own self...I love myself as I love my death". Quoted by Tim Tate p.181). He murdered the famous filmstar Sharon Tate, and wanted to have sex with her dead body. These words from the insane Charles Manson could just as well be spoken by present day suicide terrorists. They also enthuse about paradise and see death as the only way out.'You love life, we love death', those who claimed responsibility for the terrorist attacks in Madrid on March 11, 2004 said in the statement. (One month later they blew themselves up wgen their apartment in Leganes besieged by Spanish security forces).
Satanic sects in Calfornia, the suicide terrorists, someone as Mohammed Bouyeri, Adolf Eichman, and his great master Adolf Hiter, all have one thing in common: glorifying death, extermination (Shortly before the war Hitler had already written about the "Vernichtung der Judische Rasse in Europa"- The Destruction of the Jewish Race in Europe ) - and ruin. Delusional thoughts drove them to deeds.

In Holland there was a failed asylum seeker from Syria, a certain Redouan al - Issa ("Abu Khalid"). In 2003 he was the leader of the so called 'Hofstadgroep'. It concerned a small group of Morrocan men and women- some of them weren't yet twenty- from Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and The Hague,who came together in houses and let themselves be incited. During one of the meetings a woman from The Hague said she was prepared to give the ultimate sacrifice by blowing herself up somewhere in Holland. Abellatif el Morabet, a young Morrocan Berber who had been in close contact with 'the Syrian' later declared to the police: 'I saw the devil in him'. According to El Mourabet Al -Issa spured his followers on to commit suicide attacks, as a reward you go straight to paradise, he said. The General Information and Security Service (AIVD) reported on November 2004:Inside the group there was much talk about beheadings. They looked at films where such beheadings (such as those of hostages in Iraq), were paramount. They thought that this practice must be brought to Europe.' El Mourabet declared to the police that Mohammed Bouyeri and the other youths enjoyed such pictures. Mohammed Bouyeri even was aroused by them'.

A book was found at the home of Mohammed Bouyeri about Abu Mousab al - Zarqawi, the blood thirsty leader of Al Qaeda in Irak who singlehandedly beheaded helpless hostages and was characterised by a similiar destructive urge as Adolf Eichman. Zarqawi would like nothing better then to exterminate all the Jews, moderate Muslims, and also the Shiites, whom he regards as heretics.It doesn't matter if it is children, women, or the aged.In cities and villages where Zarqawi's Al Qaeda fighters rule, a Taliban like regime is implemented, Shiites and other minorities are expelled or killed. The Jordanian born Al Zarqawi has left behind him a trail of ethnic cleansing and violence.Many of his fellow combatants did not come from Iraq itself, but from Syria, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, North -Africa, and Europe. Someone like him was greatly admired by Mohammed Bouyeri and his friends from de Hofstadgroep. They would have liked to leave for Iraq and fight side by side with the fighters of 'Sheik Zarqawi' for a Talibanised Iraq.

At the home of Hofstadgroep leader Samir Azzouz, an extremely dangerous angry young Muslim who should never have been released, martyrs testaments in the form of videotapes were found on which, for example, the following text stood: 'Take up your wapens and kill Jews and non Arabs wherever you meet them'. After he was released in April 2005 , he continued making plans for terror attacks. According to an informant from the Amsterdam police one of their plans was to attack an El Al plane as it took off from the Amsterdam airport Schiphol. He had prepared farewell videos in which he referred to 'Sheik Osama Bin Laden'."May Allah protect him") and in which he directed himself towards the Dutch.

' We will take revenge for every Muslim who has been killed in defense of the unity of Allah. You are regarded as combatants because you have chosen this government. Your fortunes and your blood are permitted to us.'

Samir Azzouz was re arrested in October 2005 and it is expected that he will not be released. Earlier I commented in a TV interview with the Dutch news program Twee Vandaag that Samir Azzouz was just as dangerous as Mohammed Bouyeri.

It is all extremely frightening. The aggression, the hate, the destructive urge, it makes one think of the rage and fanaticism of the Nazis. One can only imagine what kind of horror awaits us if such deeply disturbed individuals would ever get hold of chemical, biological, or radiological weapons.If Hitler would have had the atomic bomb before the Americans, the end of the Second World War could have been quite different.

Luckily there are forces of good which have intervened in history to ward off disaster just in time. Even if peoples and governments, as Hegel observed in his 'Philosophy of History' learn precious little from history, evil never has the last word. The demonic power of Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, and Sadam Hussain was ended. In this way too Zarqawi and his followers will also be confronted with retribution.

The manifestation of evil is never continuous. Sooner or later there will be a reaction, which will make the forces of evil pay. Eichmann thought he was safe in Argentina, but in the end he came before his judges in Jerusalem and was confronted with the evidence of those who had survived the camps. In Irak Saddam Hussein also appeared in front of his judges.

In 1993 was ik voor de tweede keer in het gebied van de Bosnische Serviërs in het voormalige Joegoslavië. De oorlog was daar toen in volle gang. Een half jaar eerder had ik met een kleine camera opnamen van een Servisch doodseskader gemaakt. Het groepje mannen reed in een kleine legerkleurige truck met op de voorkant een vrijwel geheel intact skelet, waarschijnlijk van een vrouw. Het was heel eng om te zien. De mannen op de truck keken heel blij, alsof ze een heilige missie hadden volbracht. Het skelet moeten ze al een tijdje hebben gehad, mogelijk was het van een slachtoffer van een eerdere etnische zuiveringsactie. Toen ik in een ander deel van Bosnië was, kreeg ik van een Serviër een soort vignet dat aan een ander doodseskader moet hebben toebehoord. Er stond een doodskop op met daaronder de tekst: Svoboda ili smirt ('de vrijheid of de dood'). Wat er toen in Bosnië – ik was ook twee keer in het door de Serviërs belegerde Sarajevo - gebeurde, deed mij sterk denken aan wat de nazi's de joden aandeden: grootschalige deportaties, moordpartijen, het opblazen van moskeeën, massale executies van weerloze burgers, er was in Noord-Bosnië, waar ik ook geweest ben, al een begin gemaakt met regelrechte concentratiekampen (mede door de negatieve publiciteit en schokkende foto's van uitgemergelde mannen konden de Bosnische Serviërs hun plannen niet verder realiseren). Natuurlijk was de Holocaust- Hitler's programma om de Joden uit te roeien- en unieke historische tragedie- niet te vergelijken met de enige andere gebeurenis in de geschiedenis. Maar als het over de politiek and prajtiken over genocide gaat, zijn er ook enkele overeenkomsten met wat de Nazi's deden. Het bleef zich ook na 1945 manifesteren. Zoals Carl Gustav Jung, (met wie ik op andere punten van mening verschil) het in mei 1945 verwoordde:

Ook Moslims en Kroaten maakten zich aan oorlogsmisdaden schuldig, maar de Serviërs spanden ongewijfeld de kroon. Dood en vernietiging was werkelijke doel van Hitlers ‘Derde Rijk'. Hitlers SS koos uitgerekend de doodskop uit als symbool voor al zijn handelingen en dat was niet toevallig. Het ging hier, net als later in Bosnië, om een samenballing van het kwaad. Het laatste bijbelboek, de Apocalyps, rept daar ook van. Daarin is sprake van dictaturen en mensverachtende regimes. It refers to, for example, ‘a horse, sickly pale; and its rider's name was Death, (Revelation 6 verse 8) and his name that sat on him was Death and Hell (hades) followed with him,' and says: ‘Woe to you, earth and sea, for the Devil has come down to you in great fury, knowing that his time is short!' (Revelation 12 verse 12, New English Bible.) Dit laatste doet denken aan Adolf Eichmann, die, toen hij wist dat Duitsland de oorlog aan het verliezen was, in het laatste jaar van Hitlers ‘Derde Rijk' nog zeer grote aantallen joden naar de vernietigingskampen liet afvoeren. Zelfs treinen die de Duitse Wehrmacht dringend voor troepentransporten nodig had, werden bestemd voor deze transporten des doods. ‘De duivel is tot u neergedaald in grote grimmigheid...'

De rustige en ambtelijk ingestelde Adolf Eichmann was in feite een bezeten mens. Hij koesterde een blinde haat tegen de joden en het christelijk geloof. Hij had een demonische missie. En we moeten niet denken dat zulke figuren tot het verleden behoren. Massamoordenaars waren er ook na 1945, denk maar aan iemand als Pol Pot in Cambodja, denk aan Radko Mladic in Bosnië, denk aan de massaslachtingen en de orgie van geweld in Rwanda waar niets tegen ondernomen werd. Er ook nogal wat extremistische moslims die grote bewondering voor Hitler hebben. In Egypte schreef iemand eens dat hij het jammer vond Hitler het karwei om de joden te vernietigen niet had afgemaakt. In Irak zaaien tal van zelfmoordcommando's overal dood en verderf. Afgelopen zomer doodde een zelfmoordenaar in Bagdad liefst 24 kinderen die bij Amerikaanse soldaten stonden toen deze snoepjes aan het uitdelen waren. In Kirkuk, in het noorden van Irak, blies een jongen van tien jaar zichzelf op. Wat drijft zulke figuren? Niets anders dan dood en vernietiging! Wat drijft iemand als Abu Mousab al-Zarqawi of Osama bin Laden? Voor hen geldt: Hoe meer doden hoe meer vreugd, het maakt niet uit of daar ook moslims bij zijn. Het doet denken aan de bezetenheid van Eichmann. Het is een evidente samenballing van het kwaad die zich op bepaalde momenten in de geschiedenis manifesteert. Het is ook een strijd van geesten, de geesten van het leven tegen de geesten van de dood, die laatste geesten worden in de bijbel en de oerchristelijke traditie (kerk van de eerste eeuwen) wel aangeduid als ‘demonen' of ‘demonische machten' die mensen in hun bezit kunnen nemen. Overigens reduceert dat op geen enkele wijze de persoonlijke schuld en verantwoordelijkheid van zulke mensen. Volgens de christelijke leer zullen alle oorlogsmisdadigers, massamoordenaars en wrede onderdrukkers of hier beneden of straks daarboven met het oordeel worden geconfronteerd.

Tijdens het proces tegen Mohammed Bouyeri, de moordenaar van Theo van Gogh, viel me op hoe Bouyeri in zijn open brieven en geschriften de dood als centraal thema had uitgekozen. ‘Ik weet zeker dat jij, o Amerika..., o Europa..., o Nederland.., ten onder gaat.' ‘Wenst de dood of hou anders je mond...' ‘De dood is het centrale thema van alles wat bestaat...'‘In bloed gedoopt, dat is mijn laatste woord...' ‘De duistere wolken van de dood pakken zich samen boven uw land...' In de jaren zestig, zeventig en tachtig waren er in Californië satanistische secten die zich volgelingen van ‘Satan' (in the Judeo-Christian tradition Satan, or the Devil, is seen as ‘the evil one' who opposes everything which God intended to be good and harmonious) noemden en die in hun liturgie (niet zelden een doodsritueel) eveneens de dood als centraal thema hadden uitgekozen:

Toen Mohammed Bouyeri Theo van Gogh vermoordde voltrok hij een in zijn ogen rituele handeling, het was een rituele slachting. Hij schoot eerst, stak vervolgens twee grote messen in het lichaam van Theo van Gogh, probeerde het hoofd van de romp te scheiden en staarde nog korte tijd naar het lichaam van zijn slachtoffer. Hij lachte innerlijk, en liep als een voldaan mens kalm weg, hopend dat de politie ook hem zou neerschieten. Later vond de politie in het huis van Mohammed Bouyeri een cd-rom met de meest afschuwelijke beelden van onthoofdingen, publieke amputatie van een penis, stenigingen en seks met een vrouwelijk lijk. Na de mislukte aanslag van 1944 liet Hitler de daders oppakken en hij genoot van de filmopnamen die waren gemaakt van de gruwelijke wijze waarop aan aantal hen na een schijnproces ter dood werd gebracht (hoofddader graaf Klaus von Stauffenberg werd al direct geëxecuteerd).

In zijn boek" The Anatomy of Human Destructiveness", beschrijft Erich Fromm hoe perverse geesten zich aangetrokken kunnen voelen tot de dood en tot handelingen met lijken of stervende mensen. Hij omschrijft ‘de kwaadaardige agressie' (malignant aggression') van Hitler als ‘een clinische casus van necrofilie'. Freud heeft erop gewezen dat de doodsdrift (death instinct) nauw met de seksuele drift (sex instinct) verbonden is. Bij veel hedendaagse zelfmoordterroristen gaat het ook om seksuele driften: direct na de dood hoopt men met 72 maagden in het paradijs beloond te worden. Het zichzelf opblazen is voor zulke dwazen een moment van ultiem genot, te vergelijken met een orgasme. Bij Californische satanisten gaat het vaak ook om rituelen gekoppeld aan seksuele driften. Een van de leiders van zo'n secte, Charles Manson, zei eens: ‘'Death is peace from this world's madness and paradise in my own self... I love myself as I love my death.' (Quoted by Tim Tate, p. 181). Hij vermoordde de beroemde filmster Sharon Tate, en wilde seks met haar gedode lichaam. Deze woorden van een waanzinnige als Charles Manson zouden ook heel goed door heel wat hendendaagse zelfmoordterrroristen uitgesproken kunnen worden. Ook zij reppen van het paradijs en zien de dood als enige uitweg. "Jullie houden van het leven en wij van de dood" zeiden degene die verandwordelijk waren voor de aanslagen op 11 Maart 2004 in Madrid. Een maand later toen de Spaanse veiligheidseenheden hun apartemtn in Leganes omsingeld hadden bliezen ze zich zelf op. Californische satanististische secten, de zelfmoordterroristen, iemand als Mohammed Bouyeri, Adolf Eichmann en diens grote meester Adolf Hitler, zij allen hebben dit ene gemeen: verheerlijking van dood, vernietiging (Hitler had het al in 1939 over de ‘Vernichtung der Jüdischen Rasse in Europa...') en ondergang. Waandenkbeelden drijven hen tot hun daden.

Zo was er in Nederland ook een uitgeprocedeerde asielzoeker uit Syrië, een zekere Redouan al-Issa (‘Abu Khalid'). Hij werd in 2003 de leider van de zogenaamde ‘Hofstadgroep'. Het ging om een groepje Marokkaanse mannen en vrouwen – sommigen van hen waren nog geen twintig – uit Amsterdam, Rotterdam en Den Haag die in huizen bijeenkwamen en die zich door Abu Khalid lieten opzwepen. Tijdens een van die bijeenkomsten verklaarde een vrouw uit Den Haag dat zij bereid was tot het ultimeme offer door zich ergens in Nederland op te blazen. Abdellatif el Mourabet, een jonge Marokkaanse Berber die ‘de Syriër' van nabij had meegemaakt, verklaarde later tegen de politie: ‘Ik zag de duivel in hem.' Volgens El Mourabet zette Al-Issa zijn gehoor aan tot het plegen van zelfmoordaanslagen, als beloning ga je dan rechtstreeks naar het paradijs, zei hij. De Algemene Inlichtingen- en Veiligheidsdienst (AIVD) rapporteerde op 4 november 2004: 'Binnen de groep wordt veelvuldig gesproken over onthoofdingen. Zij kijken naar films waarin dergelijke onthoofdingen (o.a. van gijzelaars in Irak) de boventoon voeren. Zij zijn van mening dat dit ook in Europa in praktijk zou moeten worden gebracht.' El Mourabet verklaarde tegen de politie dat Mohammed Bouyeri en de andere jongens van zulke beelden genoten. ‘Mohammed Bouyeri raakte er zelfs helemaal opgewonden van.'

Bij Mohammed Bouyeri thuis werd een boek over de ervaringen van Abu Mousab al-Zarqawi gevonden, de bloeddorstige leider van Al-Qaeda in Irak die eigenhandig weerloze gijzelaars heeft onthoofd en die zich kenmerkt door soortgelijke vernietigingsdrang als Adolf Eichmann. Zarqawi zou het liefst alle joden, alle gematigde moslims en ook nog de sjiieten, die hij als afvalligen beschouwt, willen uitroeien. Het maakt niet uit of het om kinderen, vrouwen of hoogbejaarden gaat. In steden en dorpen waar Zarqawi's Al-Qaedastrijders het voor het zeggen hebben, wordt een Talibanachtig regime ingevoerd, sjiieten en andere minderheden worden verdreven of gedood. De oorspronkelijk uit Jordanië afkomstige Al-Zarqawi trekt door Irak een spoor van etnische zuiverigen en geweld. Veel van zijn medestrijders komen ook niet uit Irak zelf, maar uit Syrië, Saoedi-Arabië, Jordanië, Noord-Afrika en Europa. Voor zo iemand hebben Mohammed Bouyeri en zijn vrienden uit de Hofstadgroep grote bewondering. Het liefst zouden ze zelf naar Irak vertrekken om zij-aan-zij met de strijders van ‘sjeik Zarqawi' te vechten voor een getalibaniseerd Irak

. Bij Hofstadgroeplid Samir Azzouz, een levensgevaarlijke angry young Muslim die nooit vrijgelaten had moeten worden, werden thuis martelaarstestamenten in de vorm videotestamenten gevonden waarop bijvoorbeeld de volgende tekst stond: ‘Pak de wapens op en dood de Joden en niet-Arabieren waar jullie ze ook tegenkomt.' Nadat hij in april 2005 vrijkwam, ging hij door met het plannen van terreruaanslagen. Volgens een informant van de Amsterdamse politie was een van zijn plannen een aanslag op een vliegtuig van El Al dat op de Amerdanse luchthaven Schiphol zou opstijgen. Hij had al een afscheidvideoi gemaakt waarin hij referenreerde aan ‘Sjeikh Osama bin Laden' (‘moge Allah hem behoeden') en waarin hij zich vervoglens richt tot de Nederlanders:

‘Wij zullen wraak nemen voor elke moslim die gesneuveld is terwijl hij de eenheid van Allah aan het verdedigen was. Jullie worden als strijders beschouwd omdat jullie deze regering hebben gekozen. Jullie vermogens en jullie bloed zijn voor ons geoorloofd (legitiem).'

Samir Azzouz werd in oktober 2005 weer gearresteerd en zla voorlopig niet meer vrijkomen, zo is de verwachting. Eerder merkte ik in een tv interview met het aktualiteit programma Twee Vandaag op dat Samir Azzouz net zo gevaarlijk is als Mohammed Bouyeri

Het is allemaal heel beangstigend (it is extremely frightening). Die agressie, die haat, die drang tot vernietiging, het doet allemaal sterk denken aan de razernij en het fanatisme van de nazi's. Men moet er niet aan denken dat zulke dweepzieke figuren de beschikking zouden krijgen over chemische, biologische of radiologische wapens. Als Hitler de atoombom eerder had gehad dan de Amerikanen, zou de afloop van de Tweede Wereldoorlog wel eens heel anders kunnen zijn geweest. Gelukkig zijn er ook goede krachten die op beslissende momenten in de geschiedenis ingrijpen en zo het onheil tijdig afwenden In zijn 'Philosophie Der Geschicte' schreef Hegel dat al leren volkeren en regeringen soms bitter weinig van de geschiedenis, uiteindelijk heeft het kwaad nooit het laatste woord. Ook aan de duivelse macht (demonic power) van Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot en Saddam Hoesssein kwam een eind. Zo zullen ook Zarqawi en zijn volgelingen uiteindelijk te maken krijgen met de vergelding. De samenballing van het kwaad is nooit voor altijd. Er komt vroeg of laat altijd een reactie, die met de machten van het kwaad afrekent. Eichmann dacht dat hij in Argentinië veilig was, maar uiteindelijk verscheen hij in Jeruzalem voor zijn rechters om te worden geconfronteerd met de getuigenissen van hen die de kampen hadden overleefd. In Irak verscheen ook Saddam Hussein voor zijn rechters.

'God, make me a martyr'

Raiyshi dreamed of being the first female martyr

The pan-Arabic television station Al-Jazeera has broadcast a videotaped statement from the Hamas suicide bomber Reem Saleh Raiyshi.

Raiyshi - the first female suicide bomber to be used by Islamic militants - blew herself up on Wednesday at the Erez checkpoint between Israel and the Gaza Strip, killing at least four Israelis.

The following are excerpts from the broadcast statement.

By God, my heart is full of many mixed feelings that I cannot control as though a thought is filling my mind, and living in my heart, a pleasant dream is gripping my body, and the beats of my heart say: "God, make me a martyr for your sake."

I have always wished, and went too far in wishing, that my body would be shrapnel that tears the sons of Zion, and I have always wished to knock at the door of heaven with the skulls of the sons of Zion.

By God, if you break my bones and cut off my body, you will not be able to change my faith or change my banner. This is my conviction...

I began to try to do my utmost after the second preparatory grade. I searched on a daily and continuous basis in the hope of finding someone who would guide or help me in anything.

By God, my search continued for years, but I did not feel bored even for one second or retreat in my mind. It was hard for me to find someone who would satisfy my desire; namely, martyrdom. I have always dreamt and wished to carry out a martyrdom-seeking an operation inside Israel, but did not manage.

I have always dreamt of sacrificing myself for the sake of God Almighty. By God, I wished to be the first female who carried out a martyrdom-seeking operation where my body would be scattered in the air.

This was my most wanted wish that I asked God Almighty to fulfil. Through strong persistence and by God's favour, my wish was fulfilled in the manner I wanted.
