To dispel many people's assumptions that, in Islam, the word "Jihad" encourages war, OU's Muslim Student Association is holding a lecture 6 to 9 p.m. Friday to talk about how the word is misused and the religion promotes peace.

The lecture will be held in the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art as part of the museum association's Islam Awareness Month.

"Jihad means to struggle or strive in a way or sake of God," said Anosha Syeda, vice president of the Muslim Student Association. "Many times this word is given a negative connotation either by the media or government indicating that the religion of Islam encourages war, but in fact Islam promotes peace."

Jihad is used in the Quran to talk about going to war with people who are fighting you, and at other times to talk about striving to be a better Muslim by fighting your own inner self, ego, or desires, Syeda said.

"It is important for everyone to understand the true meaning to prevent stereotypes about Islam, so they can allow themselves to have a better understanding of Islam and Muslims in general," Syeda said.
