John Esposito Conflates Salafism With "Christian Right"

January 2, 2012

January 2, 2011 - San Francisco, CA - PipeLineNews.org - In an interview carried today by the Muslim Brotherhood's English website, Ikhwanweb, Dr. John Esposito [founding director of Georgetown's Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, which the kindly prince endowed to the tune of 20 million dollars] appears to be conflating Salafism [an extreme Sunni Islamist sect which is rapidly gaining political power in Egypt alongside the equally noxious Muslim Brotherhood] with America's "Christian right."

"The political Salafis believe that they have a true vision of Islam and that their version of religion is the one that they practise and the one that other people should practise too in their personal lives. Moreover, they are working to implement this vision in society as a whole... then there is the Christian Right in the US that is involved in politics, another kind of Christianity that tries to impose its own will on other people. In many religions, you have these kinds of ultra-conservative people..." [source, http://www.ikhwanweb.com/article.php?id=29499&utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter]

Given Esposito's history, such dissembling is not really surprising.

We challenge Dr. Esposito to produce evidence of an organized right-wing Christian plot - equivalent in scope to that of the revolutionary Islamists - that "tries to impose its own will on other people," via the employment of a global campaign of terror.

We won't be holding our breath waiting for a reply.
