9/11 Conspiracy Theories, Anti-Semitism and Anti-Americanism

September 7, 2011

By EMERSON VERMAAT

September 6, 2011 - San Francisco, CA - PipeLineNews.org - Conspiracy theories are very old and persistent. It was back in 1797 that John Robison, a Scottish philosopher and physicist, published his book "Proofs of a Conspiracy Against all the Religions and governments in Europe, carried on in the Secret Meetings of Freemasons, Illuminati and Reading Societies." Robison claimed that a Baviarian secret society called "the Order of the Illuminati" contributed greatly to the progress and success of the French Revolution of 1789. The real aim of the order, Robison believed, was to "rule the world" and replace existing governments by its own totalitarian "world government."

Robisons's sensational book was reprinted in 1967 by the American publisher "Western Islands," the publishing arm of far-right John Birch Society. A Dutch sympathizer of the John Birch Society once gave me a book on "Secret Societies and Subversive Movements." It was written by Nesta Helen Webster, a controversial British historian and also an anti-Semitic conspiracy theorist. Chapter 15 of her book deals with "The Real Jewish Peril." Just like Hitler and his German Nazi Party, Mrs. Webster claims "that a concerted attempt is being made by Jewry to achieve world-domination." "The deification of humanity by the Freemasons of the Grand Orient finds its counterpart in the deification of Israel by the modern Jew."

She then writes: "Antipathy to the Jew began long before the Christian era; in Egypt, Persia, and Rome he became, whether just or not, the object of suspicion to rulers. The reason given by Pharaoh for oppressing the Israelites was that they were allowed to grow too powerful they might join themselves to the enemy in time of war; the Emperors of Rome regarded them as a turbulant element; Mohammed declared: 'Their aim will be to abet disorder on the earth but God loveth not the abettors of disorder.'"

It is interesting to note that back in the 1920s a British believer in conspiracy theories quoted the Muslim prophet Mohammed – who was indeed not a friend of the Jews. "Kill any Jew who falls into your power," Mohammed was quoted as saying by his biographer Ibn Ishaq.

Anti-American and Anti-Semitic 9/11 conspiracy theories

Today, anti-Semitism is rather widespread in the Muslim world. Many Muslims believe that "Jews and Zionists" want to conquer the world. This, too, is nothing new. During World War II Nazi propaganda claimed that Churchill and Roosevelt abetted with Zionist leader Chaim Weizmann in creating a new "Zionist Kingdom" encompassing not only Palestine but also Transjordan, Syria and parts of Iraq and Saudi Arabia.

Ten years have passed now since Al-Qaeda attacked America on "9/11". But anti-American and anti-Semitic 9/11 conspiracy theories still abound, not just in the Muslim world but also in the West. Ahmad Yousef, Editor-in-Chief of the Washington based Middle East Magazine, said on Al Manar TV, in December 2004: "Israel is capable of penetrating certain Islamic circles, of directing and running them behind the scenes, so that they conduct operations from which Israel benefits. Anyone who considers the events of 9/11 cannot say that the Muslims gained anything." (Al Manar TV is a Hezbollah outlet.)

Lebanese researcher Hisham Jaber said on Al Manar TV on July 11, 2005: "A force greater than Al-Qaeda was behind these events." Mustafa Shaka, former dean of Humanities at Cairo's Ein Shams University, said on Iqra TV on June 16, 2004: "The operation was 100% American, and this is not the place to elaborate, but what proves the operation was a Jewish one is that five Jews climbed up a high building and filmed the first attack of the first plane."

That 9/11 was orchestrated by the Jews and/or the Mossad is also believed by many Iranians. Thus, the Iranian channel Jaam-e Jam TV 1 claimed on June 1, 2004: "A while afterwards, a source in American military intelligence raised details pertaining to an intelligence memo regarding Israel's espionage organization, the Mossad, and its role in the events of September 11. In fact, the claim that Israel was involved in the blast of September 11, and used it as a basis of America's new strategy for fighting the world of Islam, disappeared in the media coverage – but world public opinion still believes this possibility."

Dr. Andreas von Bülow: blaiming the CIA and the Mossad

Former German Federal Minister Dr. Andreas von Bülow published a controversial book alleging the CIA played an important role in the 9/11 attacks and then, on page 214, raises the question of possible Mossad involvement. "What does the Israeli secret service know?" Von Bülow claimed that the Israeli firm Odigo supposedly warned its employees two hours before the attacks to leave the area near the WTC. A few weeks before the attacks an Israeli shipping company decided to move to another office (in Virginia). Transport companies are often linked to secret services, von Bülow maintains. He lamely explained in a Belgian TV interview that he could not prove these things. Then there were those five mysterious Israelis who had some kind of observation post on the roof of a warehouse. A woman who saw them claimed they were happy.

Rumors, premature and hastily drawn conclusions, wild accusations, half-truths, speculations based on press clippings or the internet, that is what von Bülow's book basically is about. In the German TV program "Frontal 21" the former Research and Techology Minister was asked: "Why do you raise the question of possible Mossad involvement when you don't have any proof?" Von Bülow: "I don't know. But it is possible that an electrical firm which is active in America, a firm dealing with telephone traffic bills, and the bugging techniques…" The reporter interrupted von Bülow and asked: "Do you have evidence of the Mossad being involved?" Von Bülow: "No, but it's very probable that the Mossad is clever enough to take advantage of such things."

A German academic study on anti-Semitism in Germany finds that von Bülow is an author who is very much favored by both the radical left and the radical right (neo-Nazis). The same study quotes from a 2003 poll according to which one-third of the Germans under the age of 30 believe that the U.S. government was behind the 9/11 attacks. The same poll showed that twenty percent of all the Germans hold this view.

Von Bülow's book was recently updated ("Neue Erkenntnisse 10 Jahre danach," "New Findings 10 Years Later"), but the author failed to make any substantial corrections. So, the new edition of his book, too, contains a lot of factual errors. He still incorrectly assumes that many of the "so-called 9/11 suicide hijackers" could be alive today. The German Magazine Der Spiegel refers to them as "The Zombie Terrorists."

For example, one of the five hijackers of American Airlines Flight 11 was Waleed (Walid) Al-Sheri (Alsheri). Von Bülow quotes from information provided by Royal Air Moroc according to which Alsheri "lives in Casablanca and works as a pilot." Der Spiegel: "If Bülow had inquired with the Airline, he would have discovered that the name of the pilot who lives in Casablanca is Walid Al-Shri and not, like that of the assasin, Walid Al-Shari (Sheri, V.). This minor detail makes a big difference, namely the difference between a dead terrorist and a living innocent man." "Whatever doesn't fit is made to fit," Der Spiegel writes. "And whatever fits is included without scrutiny." The Der Spiegel authors then quote U.S. Islam expert Dr. Daniel Pipes who wrote: "The conspiracy theorist starts with the conclusion and then looks for reasons to rule everything out that does not fit."

Von Bülow still does not believe that 9/11 was an Al-Qaeda operation personally sanctioned by Osama bin Laden. Yet, the same Osama bin Laden did claim responsibility for the attacks on more than one occasion. For example, on October 29, 2004, the Al-Qaeda leader said: "For your information, we agreed with the general commander Mohammed Atta (the pilot of the first plane that hit the World Trade Center on 9/11, and was the leader of the attacks, V.), may God bless his soul, to carry out all operations within twenty minutes, before Bush and his administration could be aware of them." And on another occasion bin Laden said: "We have reacted in kind."

Bestseller author and TV journalist Gerhard Wisnewski, author of the German book "Operation 9/11" (2003, updated in 2011) also does not believe that Al-Qaeda and Osama bin Laden had anything to do with 9/11 – they are, in his view, just "phantoms." In the recently updated version of his book he even claims that "the alleged killing of bin Laden" was "a clumsy propaganda act." Just like the other 9/11 conspiration theorists, Wisnewski, a notorious leftist fanatic, claims that the U.S. government (Bush and others) were behind the 9/11 attacks. They wanted to find a justification for "the war against Islam." It is not the first time Wisnewski lays the blame on the U.S. "Go to Wisnewki's website," writes Der Spiegel, "and you'll find reports titled 'Poison Gas Used Against Kurds was Iran-CIA operation' or 'Moscow Hostage Crises: Is the USA Behind it?'" "The formula is obvious: the Americans are always the murderers." Another German 9/11 conspiration theorist with a clear anti-American agenda is Mathias Bröckers, together with Andreas Hauss the author of the book "Fakten, Fälschungen and the unterdrückten Beweise des 11.9" ("Facts, Forgeries and the suppressed evidence on 9/11"). Bröckers and Hauss believe that the official version of the 9/11 event is just "a fairy tale of Osama (bin Laden) and the 19 robbers." They claim that "some of the so-called 9/11 hijackers" are still alive.

French bestseller author Thierry Meyssan: "Osama bin Laden is a CIA fabrication"

The first to launch a sensationalist 9/11 conspiracy theory was French author Thierry Meyssan, the national secretary of the "Radical Leftist Party" (Party Radical de Gauche). His 2002 book "L'Effroyable Imposture" ("The Big Lie") immediately became a national bestseller. (In the U.S.A., Meyssans's book "The Big Lie" was published in January 2003.) Meyssan's book also inspired people like Andreas von Bülow and Gerhard Wisnewski. (It was translated into German in 2003.) Meyssan claims that the Twin Towers and part of the Pentagon were not destroyed by "foreign kamikazes," no, it was a coup by some key people in the American government, a conspiracy to change public opinion in favor of waging wars. The "war on terrorism" is nothing but president Bush's crusade against Islam" which is directly related to the "clash of civilizations." Osama bin Laden is a CIA fabrication. Indeed, "he never ceased to work for the American secret services." The Twin Towers were brought down by explosives, it was "a controlled demolition." And the Pentagon was hit by a cruise missile, not by a Boeing 757.

It was, by the way, not an American missile that hit the Pentagon. In two "National Geographic Channel" documentaries witnesses were interviewed who saw a Boeing 757 hit the Pentagon. Some of those who were inside noticed a strong smell of kerosine.

There is a witness named Penny Elgas, a civilian. She was in her car when she saw how a huge plane glided straight into the Pentagon. Later, as she came home, she noticed that a small fragment of the plane had entered her car through the open car roof. Moreover, "the DNA of those on board was recovered in the Pentagon," according to an authoritative investigation by "Popular Mechanics." "All but five of the 189 people who died on the aircraft and in the Pentagon were later identified through DNA testing. (The five hijackers were positively identified.)"

It is not surprising that Meyssan's sensationalist conspiration theories were and still are very well received in the Muslim world. By September 2006, some 250,000 copies of the Arab translation of his book had been sold in the Middle East. The leftist Frechman is a frequent guest in Arab and Iranian TV shows and discussion programs. "It is a consolation to people in the Muslim world when I tell them that Arabs did not cause 9/11," Meyssan said in a documentary on Belgian TV.

On August 30, 2005, the Iranian TV Channel "Jaam-e Jam 2" aired a very lengthy interview with Meyssan. Once again, Meyssan asserted that a missile, not a plane hit the Pentagon. "This was a missile fired by American soldiers in order to kill another group of American soldiers. This points to an internal problem with the American system." (Who told him this rubbish, by the way?) "I don't think any of the assassination attempts were carried out by Islamists, as the official American version goes. That is an embellishment, a total lie, and an attempt to cover up internal disputes in America." He also claimed Mohammed Atta's father in Egypt "is certain that his son is alive, and that he called him the day after 9/11." "Whom should we believe – the FBI or Mohammed Atta's father?"

But there is no evidence at all that Atta ever called his father on the day after 9/11. All the available evidence points in another direction: Mohammed Atta was indeed on the plane that hit the first tower of the WTC. (Nevertheless, von Bülow is also inclined to believe Atta's father.) Since his son never showed up in Cairo, Atta's father now claims the CIA killed him.

Needless to say that silly assertions like these go very well in a country such as Iran where the ruling elite consists of anti-Semitic Holocaust deniers. Thierry Meyssan's dubious flirtations with the Iranian Muslim fundamentalists is just another example of the remarkable alliances existing between the extreme left and the totalitarian Islamofascists. Other examples are given by Dr. Daniel Pipes in his article "The Leftist-Islamist Alliance in Pictures." The common enemy is America and Israel.

One of those who assisted Meyssan in his research was Pierre-Henri Bunel – a former French major who – in December 2001 – was found guilty of treason for tipping off the Serbs about NATO military plans. Bunel also published articles in "Jeune Résistance," an extreme rightist review. Fabrice Robert, the editor of Jeune Résistance, is a convicted Holocaust denier. The review is linked to the extreme rightist group "Unité Radicale" (Radical Union) which expressed support for Hamas and the notorious German neo-Nazi Horst Mahler, a former marxist as well as a Holocaust denier.

Liberal theologian Ray Griffin: "The demonic American empire"

Thierry Meyssan's book inspired many American 9/11 conspiration theorists, including a number of liberal theologians. One of them is David Ray Griffin whose book "The New Pearl Harbor" (2004) claims it poses "Disturbing Questions about the Bush Administration and 9/11." Griffin is a founding member of the "9/11 Scholars for Truth" movement in the United States. Griffin writes that he "learned of the work of the French researcher Thierry Meyssan, in particular his hypothesis that the aircraft that hit the Pentagon could not have been a Boeing 757, which is what Flight 77 was, but must have been a guided missile." The fact that the black boxes from AA Flight 77 were found is later – in a subsequent book – explained away by Griffin when he suggests that these boxes "had been planted." Once again, fantasy knows no bounds.

Griffin fully endorses "the revisionist thesis that the attacks on 9/11, which President Bush has rightly called evil, were carried out with the complicity of some officials of the Bush administration itself."

What is quite remarkable here is the fact that Griffin calls the new theories on 9/11 "revisionist." Mind you, Holocaust deniers also refer to their outlandish theories on the Holocaust as "revisionist." Griffin is not a Holocaust denier himself, yet there is a clear analogy. Holocaust deniers, Islamists, neo-Nazis and 9/11 conspiration theorists share the same enemies: the United States, Israel and the "Zionists."

Laying the blame on the CIA for 9/11 is also one of Griffin's favorate themes. Mohammed Atta? Paid by the CIA! Ahmed Shah Massoud? Killed by the CIA and the ISI (Pakistani Intelligence Service)! In fact, however, Massoud, an anti-Taliban resistance leader, was killed by two Al-Qaeda operatives from Belgium – just two days before 9/11, that is. Osama bin Laden? Was in touch with the CIA and Saudi intelligence, so Griffin claims.

Griffin further asserts that United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed in Pennsylvania, was in fact shot down. He quotes "independent researcher" Paul Thompson (another 9/11 conspiracy freak) who "believes that the government decided that it was necessary – but not because the hijackers' mission was going to succeed. Thompson asks why fighter pilots were given authorization to shoot down hijacked airplanes only after Flight 93 was the only one left in the sky." "His implicit answer given the evidence that the passengers were successfully wrestling control of the plane away from the hijackers, is that this was the one plane that was likely to be landed safely – which would, among other things, mean there might be live hijackers to be interrogated." "The evidence suggests that when the authorities wanted a flight shot down, they were not hindered by lack of either competence or coordination." (What evidence?) "The evidence from this flight suggests, like the previous ones, active involvement of U.S. military leaders in planning the attacks. In this case, they apparently also had to take remedial action because of unexected development."

I just wonder, why don't we read anyting about these wild assertions in Wikileaks? The U.S. government itself is, so it seems to me at least, one great leak – it is virtually impossible to protect American state secrets, let alone grand conspiracies like the ones described above! The reason why there is no U.S. government leak here, is that all, I repeat all, 9/11 conspiracy theories are sheer nonsense, political rubbish.

Just like von Bülow Griffin asserts that five of the 19 hijackers are still alive. He, too, claims that Waleed Al-Sheri is working for a (Moroccan) airline company. Griffin repeats this assertion in a 2007 book called "Debunking 9/11 Debunking." Al-Sheri worked in Morocco as a pilot and was still alive, he writes. We already quoted from the thorough investigation conducted by the German magazine Der Spiegel. They found out that the name of the pilot in Morocco is not Al-Sheri, like that of the 9/11 hijacker, but Walid (Waleed) Al-Shri.

Liberal theologian William Sloane Coffin: a friend of communists and Iraninian Islamists

It was in 2006 that Griffin published the book "Christian Faith and the Truth Behind 9/11." This book was meant to convince the American Christian community about "the truth behind 9/11." Griffin now links "the American empire" to "demonic evil." The 9/11 attacks were "a false flag operation orchestrated within the U.S. government," it was "a manifestation of demonic evil," and "orchestrated by our own government." (This sounds like the ideology of the conspiracy freaks of the John Birch Society, does it not?)

Griffin's book was recommended by the late Rev. William Sloane Coffin (1924-2006) from Riverside Church, New York City. Coffin was a very vocal advocate of leftist causes and a personal friend of Griffin's. "Professor David Ray Griffin has a well-deserved reputation for thoroughness of his research," Coffin wrote on the back cover of Griffin's book. "All Americans who love their country enough to dig into the facts of these critical times will be well rewarded by examining his books. 9/11 truth is a very important issue – one with the power to bring lasting change to our country."

The first time I heard about William Sloane Coffin was in the early 1980s. I met a concerned member of his Riverside Church at press conferences of the World Council of Churches (WCC) in various parts of the world. This man was the Czech refugee Blahoslav Hrúbi (1911-1990). Blahoslav and his wife Olga were living in New York – they had U.S. citizenship. As a member of the ecumenical press corps, Hrúbi occasionally attended Central Committee meetings of the World Council of Churches. It was there that I first met this elderly sympathetic and quiet man. He was one of the very few reporters who at press conferences dared to pose critical and unwelcome questions to WCC dignitaries about human rights violations in the Eastern (communist) Bloc. (He spoke and read Russian and knew quite well what was going on there.) I fully shared Hrúbi's passion about denouncing religious freedom and human rights violations by communist dictators and asked similar questions.

It was back in August 1976 that I asked Dr. Philip Potter, the WCC's General Secretary at the time, about reports in the French newspaper "Le Monde" (February 17 and 18, 1976) about mass killings perpetrated by the communist Khmer Rouge rulers in Cambodia. Dr. Potter, a politically naive pastor from Jamaica who favored "dialogue and cooperation" with communist regimes, was suddenly upset, saying that we must not forget our own sins. After all, "we are all sinners." Churches in the West should not be "self-righteous," he declared lamely.

During visits to New York Blahoslav Hrúbi told me about William Sloane Coffin, his pastor in New York. Like Hrúbi Coffin also spoke Russian. Hrúbi told me that Coffin and his assistant Cora Rubin Weiss had frequent meetings with Soviet diplomats. (Weiss' wealthy father Samuel Rubin, an American communist in the 1930s, happened to be an emigré from Russia.) Hrúbi suspected that these diplomats were working under cover for the Russian intelligence service KGB. The diplomats were either linked to the Russian Embassy in Washington or the Russian diplomatic mission at the UN in New York. (I knew who they were.) Coffin was an outspoken admirer of Soviet Russia and hated U.S. policies. Coffin also played an interesting role during the Iranian hostage crisis at the end of 1979. So-called Iranian students had occupied the U.S. Embassy in Tehran and all American diplomats, American staff members and marines were taken hostage by them. However, at Christmas 1979, the Iranian hostage takers suddenly allowed Coffin (and two other American clergymen) to travel to Tehran and meet the American hostages.

One of the American hostages, consular officer Robert Ode, later said: "The whole thing was a farce as far as I was concerned. It was pure propaganda. I remember Sloane Coffin, in attempting to give us some comfort, wasn't very comforting, because his whole attitude seemed to be more sympathetic to the terrorists than to any of the hostages." Another hostage, marine security guard sgt. Paul Lewis, later said: "I was a little upset with Reverend Coffin. As a sign of brotherhood, he wanted us to sing Christmas carols and hold hands with the Iranians sitting beside us. I refused to have anything to do with that. I wasn't about to hold hands with those guys, and I wouldn't sing. I just sat there. Before we left, Sloane Coffin hugged each of us, and I told him, 'This is all bullshit. Total bullshit.' In those words." Sgt. Rocky Sickmann, another marine security guard, later said: "Cookies and candy and pastries were all spread out for the TV cameras, like we were having a great time." And warrant officer Joe Hall later said: "I went in thinking that we were going to have a quiet service, but then I saw cameras and I realized that it was just a media event. I was doing pretty well until that charade."

Mark Bowden, in his excellent book "Guests of the Ayatollah," also describes how some U.S. hostages felt uncomfortable in the presence of Coffin. Victor Tomseth "was suspicious of Coffin, who had the air of a grandstander about him. It seemed to the veteran diplomat that the famous leftist preacher was playing to his home audience." Robert Ode told Coffin: "If you are under the impression that the students (i.e. the Iranian hostage takers, V.) are being kind to us, then you are mistaken." "In a brief conversation with Bill Keough, Coffin remarked, jokingly, that he had often longed for an extended period of quiet where he could read and think to contemplate. Keough smiled grimly. It was the remark of a man who had never been taken hostage in a foreign country and threatened daily with trial and execution."

Many hostages were suspicious of Coffin, and for good reason. He had, Bowden writes, "defended the hostage takers in public statements in the United States, saying, 'We scream about the hostages, but few Americans heard the screams of tortured Iranians.'"
