February 17 2011- Militant Islam Monitor -Russell Defreitas, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Guyana has been given a life sentence for his role in the plot to blow up the fuel pipeline under JFK airport. He is a retired cargo handler at the airport. Defreitas was charged together with three other men in the plot. One of the men, Abdul Kadir, was a former member of the Guyanese parliament.
According to the New York Times:
Prosecutors said Mr. Defreitas came up with a sinister plan intended to cause a chain reaction of explosions along a pipeline that runs between the airport and other parts of New York City. The conspirators hoped to destroy the country's economy, prosecutors said, and tried to contact Adnan G. el-Shukrijumah, a Qaeda operative with explosives training. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/18/nyregion/18plot.html
Defreitas became radicalized when he saw weapons being exported to Israel through the airport and spoke of punishing the United States with attacks that would "dwarf 9/11". http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/queens/life_for_jfk_terror_plot_8Qo7Akikhv2XkLtxWDb3qL
"It will take out the whole, entire area," Defreitas told a government informant. "The whole of Kennedy will go up in smoke." Defreitas added that "A few people might escape, but to where? The Jamaica Bay?"
