February 16, 2011

February 16 2011- Militant Islam Monitor-Jordan which is considered a "moderate" Arab state and an "ally" of the U.S. and Israel is experiencing a vocal resurgence of Islamism and Islamists.

A group of 106 Jordanian clerics and others have issued a statement saying that Jordan must close all night clubs and combat prostitution. According to AFP:

"We demand the government close all nightclubs, which work under the pretext of promoting tourism," 109 clerics, among them a former cabinet minister, MPs, Islamist leaders, university professors and mosque preachers, said in the joint statement."

The statement also mentioned two clubs which are situated in Mecca and Medina streets calling their presence there "insulting to Islam and Muslims" and demanded a halt to prostitution and a closing of brothels and that the government implement laws "that fight all anti-Islamic and unethical acts which destroy our society,"

Recently the Jordanian Justice Minister Hussein Mjali called for the release of a terrorist who shot and killed 7 Israeli school girls in 1997 and referred to the killer as a "hero".Mjali was his defense lawyer. He also labelled Israel a "terrorist state that will be destroyed".

Mjali became Justice Minister after the government was changed as a preemptive step to prevent the kind of upheaval taking place in Egypt and the rest of the Middle East.
