ACLU Presser In Support of Al-Awlaki

September 14, 2010

September 14, 2010 - San Francisco, CA - PipeLineNews.org - A press release filed today and appearing on the ACLU website [http://www.aclu.org/national-security/ccr-and-aclu-response-report-government-will-bring-charges-against-anwar-al-aulaqi] reads in part, "In August, the American Civil Liberties Union and the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) filed a lawsuit challenging the government's asserted authority to carry out "targeted killings" of U.S. citizens located far from any armed conflict zone. The groups were retained by Nasser Al-Aulaqi to bring the lawsuit in connection with the government's decision to authorize the targeted killing of his son, Anwar Al-Aulaqi. The groups charge that if the government has evidence that a U.S. citizen is involved in terrorist activity, he should be charged with a crime and prosecuted."

In a short period of time, Anwar Al-Awlaki, counselor to terrorists, has become somewhat of a household name, connected in a long chain of associations with nearly every major U.S. incidence of terrorism, from 9/11 through Major Hasan's murderous jihad at Ft. Hood.

In August the ACLU filed suit to prevent what it refers to as the "extrajudicial killing," of Al-Awlaki, stating that he should not be "punished for past acts."

That the ACLU is on weak ground here should be obvious, and to hear them extol, "The right to life is the most fundamental of all rights" [source, ACLU lawyer Arthur Spitzer, as quoted in the ACLU's complaint] in the face of the organization's wholesale support of abortion is precious to say the least.

Perhaps the organization's sentiments are to be forgiven with the spate of recent Supreme Court rulings [especially the Hamdi and Hamdan cases] whose apparent intent is to transfer the responsibility of conducting war from the CIC to the judiciary.

Regardless, the ACLU continues to ply its seditious trade, content that there remains significant legal support on the left for accused terrorists.
