A SA Islamic activist has forged strong ties with the Bin Laden family, receiving substantial funding from them and, in the process, meeting Osama bin Laden, the man named as prime suspect in this week's terror attacks.

Yousuf Deedat, 45, who triggered a storm when he distributed thousands of anti-Semitic handbills featuring a picture of Adolf Hitler during the World Conference Against Racism in Durban last week, said he first met Bin Laden in 1989.

Deedat and his father, Muslim scholar Ahmed Deedat, met Bin Laden on several other occasions in Saudi Arabia that year and in the 1990s while they were drumming up support for the Islamic Propagation Centre International in Durban.

"He was quiet-spoken, respectful and humble. When he met my father, he did not look him in the eye. That is the greatest honour an Arab can bestow on an elder," said Deedat.

The Deedats have had close links with the Bin Laden family since first meeting Osama's elder brother, Sheikh Bakr bin Laden, in 1986. Since then, many of the 27 Bin Laden brothers have contributed generously to the centre. Sheikh Bakr alone gave the centre $3.1-million over eight years to buy a building, print the Koran in English and Zulu, and print and distribute Islamic literature.

In appreciation, the Deedats named their building in Durban's Victoria Street after the family in 1988.

During his tenure as secretary-general of the propagation centre, the Bin Ladens reportedly paid Yousuf Deedat a monthly salary of R900 000.

Deedat said Bin Laden had invited him on a number of occasions to attend his lectures in Saudi Arabia. "He moved me to tears. He was a man of few words, but when he spoke in public, he had this magnetic effect on all who listened to him." Whether he was guilty or not, Deedat said, the US would always use him as a scapegoat".

Then came September 11, 2001. The western world had long known that the building housing the offices of the IPCI on Grey Street, Durban, used to be called Bin Laden Centre (although for many years now it has been called Shaikh Ahmad Deedat Centre). In the aftermath of September 11, 2001, everyone seemed to remember that old name of the centre. A plethora of broadcast and print journalists from all over the world descended on Shaikh Deedat's Durban home, wanting to know the Shaikh's relationship with the Bin Laden family and, ostensibly, with Osama. (It was speculated on the South African media that Yusuf, the Shaikh's son, was a personal friend of Osama's.)

And so it was that I was visiting Shaikh Deedat when a French television network arrived early October, 2001. The first question was: did Shaikh Deedat know the Bin Laden family? "Yes", said the Shaikh in answer to the French television interviewer's question. "I did know the Bin Laden family quite closely. In fact, the most senior Bin Laden, Shaikh Muhammad, had contributed the largest chunk of money during the building of the IPCI. Therefore, when the building was completed, we felt that we should name it Bin Laden Centre after the family, and we did. Many years later, I met Shaikh Muhammad bin Laden and told him what we did. The senior Bin Laden humbly declined the honour, saying were that the family donated one hundred percent of the building's expenses, they would have accepted. So we reluctantly had to remove the family's name".

"But has Shaikh Deedat personally ever met Osama bin Laden?" At this question, the Shaikh's eyes shone and he smiled before he answered, using his eyes, interpreted by Yusuf. "Yes", Shaikh Deedat said, "I did meet Osama, a rather shy, respectful young man. One day when I was visiting Shaikh Muhammad bin Laden, his brother Osama was sitting not too far away. He showed interest in what we were discussing, but did not utter a word, since his comments were not sought. Such decorum, such respect to elders. It was after our conversation that the senior Bin Laden called Osama closer and introduced him to me as his brother just back from Afghan jihad. That was the first and last time I met Osama".

When that interview was broadcast, Yusuf Deedat and his father became hot media stuff in Europe, North America and locally in South Africa. Tour guides made brisk business shepherding visiting journalists to the Shaikh's home, which became a major tourist attraction of Durban. During my few visits, I met various types of visitors: Muslims, Christians, Jews, Europeans, Asians, Africans. Shaikh Deedat's memory was still very sharp, as he could remember that many Nigerians, including Kabiru Yusuf of Trust who was in Durban for the 1999 Commonwealth Summit, and another brother who had also published a similar story in a past Weekly Trust, had visited him not too long previously.

A South African who claims to have close links to international terrorist Osama Bin Laden has admitted responsibility for printing anti-Semitic handbills - featuring a picture of Nazi leader Adolf Hitler - which caused a storm at the World Conference Against Racism in Durban this week.

Yousuf Deedat, the son of fiery Muslim scholar Ahmed Deedat, said he distributed the handbills to encourage debate on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The handbill, which infuriated Jewish delegates, features a picture of Hitler and poses the question: "What if I had won?"

The answer below reads: "There would be no Israel and no Palestinian's blood shed. The rest is your guess."

The wealthy Deedat family admitted being "good friends" with billionaire Bin Laden after the bombings of US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania three years ago.

Ahmed Deedat admitted that the Bin Laden family had contributed "generously" to the coffers of his organisation, the Islamic Propagation Centre (IPCI).

A report at the time said that Yousuf Deedat, 45, in his capacity as secretary-general of the IPCI, was paid a monthly salary of R900 000 by the Saudi family to propagate Islam in South Africa.

Over the years, about $3-million (R25-million) has been channelled into the centre's bank accounts by the Bin Laden family.

Bin Laden is the FBI's most-wanted terrorist with a $5-million (R42-million) price on his head.

The US State Department called the wealthy terrorist "one of the most significant sponsors of Islamic extremist activities in the world today".

He has also been linked to the 1993 World Trade Centre blast and the bombing of a US naval ship in Yemen last year. He is believed to be living in Afghanistan where he enjoys the protection of the Taliban regime.

Yousuf Deedat is unrepentant about the handbills . "I encourage open debate. That is the beauty of democracy ," he said.

Referring to this week's walkout by the US and Israel, he said people should not be "dogmatic and walk away from discussion like cowards".

"With regard to the picture of Hitler, whether it makes sense or not, I want people to think, thus stimulating the mind to debate issues ."

He said he did not hate Jews but rather the "injustices done to others, like my brothers and sisters in Palestine".

Deedat, who spends hundreds of thousands of rands a month promoting his father's books, said the Bin Ladens had sponsored his family over the years.

He admitted being paid a salary by the Bin Laden family but refused to confirm whether he had received close to R1-million a month from them during his tenure at the IPCI.

Yehuda Kay, of the SA Jewish Board of Deputies, lambasted Deedat's "concerted campaign" against the Jewish people.

"It is the most vile, disgusting and racist material that has been seen since the Nazi propaganda period. It just stirs up racial and religious tension," said Kay.

Israeli Peleg Reshef, the chairman of the Union of Jewish Students, said the attack epitomised what the Israeli delegation had seen and been subjected to during their stay in the country.

American Stacy Burdett, of the Anti-Defamation League, a Jewish lobby group, said the handbill implied that the only way to maintain Palestinian rights would be to exterminate Jewish people.

"The conflict in Israel is over land, not the extermination of one group over another," she said.

According to search warrants, federal agents suspected GSISS and the others of “potential money laundering and tax evasion activities and their ties to terrorists groups such as al Qaeda as well as individual terrorists . . . The Association of Muslim Social Scientists (AMSS) recognizes the danger posed by Islam-bashers and the need to better inform our fellow Americans about Islamic values and the profound passion Muslim Americans have toward the noble principles that lie at the foundation of the United States.

The recent tide of anti-Islam rhetoric is a source of concern to all Muslims and people of good will. It is particularly of great concern for American Muslims, as it is clearly a prelude to violence against Arab and Muslim American communities.

The campaign to discredit and defame Islam takes advantage of the knowledge-gap between the narrow and one-dimensional presentation of Islam in western literature, and the multi-faceted and complex manifestations of Islamic worldview in modern society. Media coverage of Islam that focuses on violence, while leaving out half of the truth about Muslim realities, has added to the distortion. Most recently, pro-Israel evangelists have made unsparing attacks on Islam, thereby putting fear in the heart of people and adding more confusion to an already confused public.

In its efforts to educate the public and inform leaders of public opinion, AMSS plans to produce 10 small-to-medium monographs, addressing some of the misunderstandings about Islam and Muslims. The project, tentatively entitled "Examining Islam" aims at mobilizing Muslim scholars and scholars of Islam to counter the disinformation campaign, and to promote a true understanding of Islam.

The monographs to be produced as part of this project are not intended to advance theoretical issues, but rather address issues of practical significance written in a language accessible to the general public. Upon completion of the work, the monographs are to be published in large quantities, and distributed to political leaders, journalists, religious leaders, churches, and civic organizations.

They ignore the fact that, prompted by earlier such smear campaigns, the University administration had already sponsored an investigation of Prof. Al-Arian's organization, WISE and concluded that it was a benign institution.

But his work as a geopolitical analyst for Stratfor Strategic Forecasting Inc. shows that a militant Islamist who proclaims to be reformed as a "post Islamist" can be seen as a valuable resource by Strategic Forecasting Incorporated..

Stratfor CEO George Friedman considesr Bokhari's personal involvement with a militant Islamist group to be valuable work experience. According to Stratfor VP Ron Moore ,

"We (at Stratfor), knew of Bokhari's background and make sure he doesn't write anything which is extremist". Statfor's analysts work by region and do not get bylines on their work, and a recent item on their website headlined;

"Al Qaeda and Bin Laden Too Easy to Blame?", on the bombings in Istanbul , opined that; "the subsequent investigation suggests an emerging trend , to blame Al Qaeda for any and all such attacks".

This analysis bore an eerie similiarity to an article which Bokhari wrote as Al Muhajiroun's spokesman in 1999 while at SMSU entitled "Freedom Fighters Now Being Called Terrorists", in which he wrote that; "Bin Laden is no more than a suspect in the bombings of U.S. embassies in East Africa .But the media, dancing to the tune of Federal Agencies has already indicted him ".

Kamran Bokhari's documented involvement with Al Muhajiroun can thus far be traced to 1997, where the introductory speaker at their "Rally Against Opression", in London together with the group's leaders Omar Bakri and Anjem Choudary. Bokhari was listed on a flyer as 'the chairman and spokesman for Al Muhajiroun in the U.S.A.. Kashmir. And although you may see a few before you, one day we will
liberate all Muslim lands. One day you will see the flag of Islam over the

Bokhari then leads his followers in chanting, "HEZBOLLAH, HEZBOLLAH! AND
WE SUPPORT BIN LADEN! BIN LADEN! WE SUPPORT BIN LADEN! What do we
want? JIHAD! What do we want? JIHAD! JIHAD! JIHAD!"

In 1999 Bokhari was the planning coordinator for the Muslim Students Association at Springfield University. Al Muhajiroun had come under media scrutiny and the group issued a press release in response to allegations that they had received money from Osama Bin Laden, declaring that ; "Brother Kamran Bokhari, who is the spokesperson for Al-Muhajiroun and is a respected member of society and a student of political science in his final year of undergraduate studies."

Louay Safi's comment is noteworthy because it's clumsy wording inadvertently reveals the AMSSS's true agenda, which is to undermine the foundation of the United States. Al Muhajiroun leader, Kamran Bokhari's AMSS executive board position shows that their agendas have merged and that the devil no longer needs to use deception.
