Ahmed Mohamed

TAMPA - Ahmed Mohamed, a former University of South Florida student, pleaded guilty today to a terrorism charge.

Mohamed will be sentenced in 80 days per his plea agreement.

U.S. Magistrate Mark Pizzo heard Mohamed's plea during a hearing this morning.

Mohamed, an Egyptian national, was charged with posting a video on the YouTube Web site in which he shows how to use a remote-controlled toy to detonate a bomb.

Mohamed signed an agreement Friday in which he pledged to plead guilty to the charge of providing material support to terrorists. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in federal prison.

Mohamed was arrested, along with another then-USF student, Youssef Megahed, on Aug. 4 in South Carolina after deputies found explosive materials in the trunk of the car in which they were riding, authorities said.

Megahed still faces trial on a charge of transporting explosives.
