Hamas Prisoners Stage Hunger Strike

June 27, 2011

June 27, 2011 - San Francisco, CA - PipeLineNews.org - Hamas prisoners being held in at least one Israeli jail have started a hunger strike, in response to the Netanyahu government's decision to remove a small number of them from the general prison population and place them in solitary confinement.

Netanyahu's move was driven by growing public outrage over the refusal of Hamas leaders to permit human rights groups from visiting Gilad Shalit and IDF soldier who was kidnapped in 2006.

Hamas has repeatedly used Shalit as a bargaining chip in order to secure the release of hundreds of Hamas prisoners.

According to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz [see, http://www.haaretz.com/news/diplomacy-defense/israel-prisons-service-hamas-prisoners-abandon-hunger-strike-despite-threat-1.369830] so far, the hunger strike is only being held at Hadarim prison with the hope that a senior Hamas leader being held there will be released.
