Jihadist Truck Bomber Strikes Russian City

August 17, 2009 - San Francisco, CA - PipeLineNews.org - Chechen Muslim terrorists are believed to have been responsible for detonating a huge truck bomb today in the Russian city of Nazran, capitol of Ingushetia province wich is located in the Northern Caucuses region of the country.

The attackers used a truck loaded with over 400 pounds of explosive early this morning to crash through the iron gates of the local police station. The resulting explosion left a massive crater in a courtyard just inside the gates where an assembly of policemen was taking place. Describing the carnage to Russian television reporters, Interior Ministry spokeswoman Marina Hajiva stated, "Rescue workers are going [to] the site of the terrorist attack in Nazran. Investigation and fire crews are operating at the scene. Let me remind you that at nine this morning someone drove a vehicle stuffed with explosives through the gates of the Nazran region internal affairs building. This caused an explosion and fire." Casualties so far are 20 dead and at least 100 injured, many seriously.

Though the flare-up in violence obviously caught local law enforcement by surprise, possibly lulled into complacency by the waning jihad in the neighboring Chechen province, mujahideen attacks in the area have been on the rise, with a June assault on a convoy having seriously injured Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, the province's president.
