An Israeli Arab woman is at this moment probably puzzling over the odd Haredi she met yesterday. That was me! Here is what happened:

After the attack in NYC, I wanted to post on my FB page, "Islam is your roots, Muslims are your friends, hug a Muslim today". Also, I was not going anywhere much and thought, I wish I could hug a Muslim today, but in the areas I will be in, not likely.

It was just a hope, not even a prayer.

In line at the bank, the cashier was wrapping up my request, I do not know why I glanced around, I guess my soul knew she was there, a Muslim woman in Hijab and her brother? Husband?

Yeah! JazkAll-h! I looked at her and my eyes widened and I smiled with the same joy you express when meeting an old friend. "Hi! Oh wow, Salaam Aleikum! I was hoping to see a Muslimina today! Wow, All-h answered my du'a!" Her brow furrowed, she sort of smiled but looked a bit wary, I quickly added, "you see, since the attack in NY I was worried that Muslims will be treated badly, so I wanted to post on my FB, 'hug a Muslim today', and All-h sent you to me!" She relaxed and smiled at me, and translated for the man standing with her.

(Note - Islam teaches etiquette to the nth degree so she may have been very polite to me while thinking this Haredi to be rather odd, just so you know.)

I rambled on, you know, getting myself out of a situation I had gotten myself into, as the cashier wished me a pleasant day, there I was greeting a Muslim woman whom I have never met with the exuberance of reuniting with an old friend.

"We are Umma Wahida, that is the way it should be!" She smiled nicely, brow smooth, head up, and translated for the man next to her. I decided I had thrown enough at her so instead of throwing my 5 foot 4 inch frame to boot, I asked if we could shake hands, and of course as a polite Muslimina she shook my hand heartily.

"Salaam! All-h Ma'ak!" I concluded, and left the bank

Silly me

The Other and the Race for Virtue

-----

Attended the Abrahamic Reunion's presentation, Praying Together in Jerusalem, at this two day conference on "Living Together in Mixed Cities", which hosted various discussions on coexistence in the Holy Land.

Praying Together in Jerusalem is held on the last Thursday late afternoon of every month (Gregorian - western - calendar). Members of all faiths attend. We pray separately in our own tradition, then stand in a circle and share ideas at the end. We do not hold hands, I never stand between two men.

PTIJ is not mixed or alternative prayer - the forum respects the traditions and integrity of each faith.

The conference was supported by voices from the Left, the PTIJ presentation included people who are not orthodox - not in the Jewish faith, not in their own.

So what is a haredi doing there?

From left to right, from religious to secular, there is exists the idea that if you associate with someone, you are granting them legitimacy. This can lead to bad politics, even sin. My earlier articles on Giving Voice to Muslims Who Seek Peace got this response from some traditional Jews - what if your Muslim-Jewish rapprochement leads to intermarriage?

I doubt this fear - granting legitimacy via association - permeated the height of the Golden Age in Spain.

The sad myth of modern nationalism is that each nation can exist on its own, no need for the Other.

Islam has the concept of Umma Wahida - a united federation of diverse faiths. In the words of Qatada, seventh century Muslim, "al deen wahad, al sha'aria muchtalifa" – there is one basic deen/din/law, and many acceptable covenants. And each nation is in a "race for virtue" - you do not participate in a competition if you have no awareness of the Other - in fact, your awareness of that Other helps you perfect yourself.

Judaism has the concept of the Seven Laws of Noach, basic tenets that apply to a diverse humanity.

So view your associations with the Other, which are inevitable anyway, as part of the Race for Virtue, as an opportunity for Daw'a/making a kiddush HaShem.

We cannot continue to imagine that we will remain in our own bubbles, and those bubbles are not just left-right, or Arab-Jewish, I am also referring to the bubbles that exist inside our own communities, hermetically sealing us off from each other until conflict arises and takes us by surprise.
