At least six people were killed and several others wounded in a ramming attack that occurred in the borough of Manhattan in New York City on Tuesday.

The attack occurred when a vehicle drove onto the bike lane in lower Manhattan, striking several cyclists. The driver was reportedly in possession of several fake guns.

Several of the wounded are reportedly in serious condition.

One witness tweeted: "A car just ran over 2 people and then crashed into a school bus. I see two dead bodies and citibikes on the floor destroyed."

"What happened was there was a car crash… he came out of one of the cars. He had two guns. He was running around Chambers and somebody started to chase him," Laith Bahlouli, 14, told the New York Post.

The NYPD asked pedestrians and drivers to avoid the area of Chambers Street and West Street, where the incident occurred. Police have closed the FDR Drive that runs north-south on the eastern side of Manhattan in both directions in order to rush victims to the hospital.

Fox News reported that the driver shouted 'Alahu Akbar!'

Police shot the diver and took him into custody.

More details are emerging about Sayfullo Saipov, the 29-year-old suspect in Tuesday'sramming attack in Manhattan.

Saipov, who had been living in Tampa, Florida, is originally from Uzbekistan, having arrived in the U.S. in 2010.

According to The New York Times, investigators discovered handwritten notes in Arabic near the truck used by Saipov that indicated allegiance to the Islamic State (ISIS) jihadist organization.

At the same time, the newspaper said, investigators had not uncovered evidence of any direct or enabling ties between Saipov and ISIS and were treating the episode as a case of an "inspired" attacker.

The Associated Press quoted a law enforcement official who said that Saipov rented the truck he used in the attack about an hour before the attack.

Although Saipov has a Florida license, he may have been staying in New Jersey, the official said.

After the ramming attack, Saipov smashed into a school bus, jumped out of his truck and ran up and down the highway waving a pellet gun and paintball gun and shouting "Allahu Akbar before he was shot in the abdomen by the officer.

Eight people were killed in the attack and 11 were injured, according to The New York Times.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio described the attack as "a particularly cowardly act of terror aimed at civilians, aimed at people going about their lives, who had no idea what was about to hit them."

President Donald Trump on Tuesday night offered condolences to the victims of the terrorist attack in Manhattan, writing on Twiiter, "My thoughts, condolences and prayers to the victims and families of the New York City terrorist attack. God and your country are with you!"

Trump had earlier tweeted, "In NYC, looks like another attack by a very sick and deranged person. Law enforcement is following this closely. NOT IN THE U.S.A.!"

"We must not allow ISIS to return, or enter, our country after defeating them in the Middle East and elsewhere. Enough!" he added.

  • The New York Police Department described what had happened in a series of tweets:

  • "Earlier a vehicle entered the West St. pedestrian/bike path a few blocks north of Chambers St.
  • "The vehicle struck multiple people on the path. There are several fatalities and numerous people injured.
  • "The vehicle continued south striking another vehicle. The suspect exited the vehicle displaying imitation firearms & was shot by NYPD
  • "The suspect is in custody. This is preliminary, more information to follow."

Manhattan attacker charged with terrorism offenses

Sayfullo Saipov told investigators he felt good about what he had done, according to complaint against him.

Sayfullo Saipov, the terrorist who carried out Tuesday's attack in Manhattan in which eight people were killed, was charged on Wednesday with federal terrorism offenses, according to a document from the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York.

Saipov, a 29-year-old Uzbek national who was living in New Jersey, is charged with providing material support to the Islamic State (ISIS) and violence and destruction of motor vehicles, according to CNN.

A criminal complaint filed against him said he confessed to authorities while in custody that he began planning the attack a year ago, reported Reuters.

The 10-page complaint said Saipov told investigators he was inspired by ISIS videos he had watched on his cellphone, chose Halloween for the attack because he believed more people would be on the streets, and had originally planned to strike the Brooklyn Bridge as well as the bike path.

The complaint also said Saipov had requested permission to display Islamic State's flag in his hospital room and said he felt good about what he had done.

Meanwhile, the FBI is seeking the public's assistance with information about an Uzbekistan national in connection with the attack, according to an FBI poster released Wednesday.

The second suspect in question has been identified as Mukhammadzoir Kadirov, 32.

Earlier on Wednesday, NYPD deputy commissioner for intelligence and counterterrorism John Miller said that Saipov had planned the attack for weeks and carried out the killings "in the name of ISIS."

Authorities say Saipov drove a rented truck onto a well-trafficked bike path just blocks from the World Trade Center on Tuesday afternoon, killing eight and injuring more than a dozen before crashing into a school bus. He then left the vehicle brandishing imitation firearms and was shot by police, survived and was taken into custody..

A note written in Arabic praising ISIS was found inside the truck used by Saipov to commit the ramming attack, an NYPD official told NBC News. The note read: "ISIS lives forever."

Investigators who came to interview the terrorist reported that he was rejoicing at having murdered many innocent people.
