Iranian Nuke Talks: The Endless Charade

July 2, 2015

July 1, 2015 – San Francisco, CA – PipeLineNews.org – With another "deadline" having passed [apparently a movable feast, this one, June 30] the Kabuki of the P5+1 negotiations on Iran's nuclear program continues, apparently without end.

With the talks dragging on - absent any progress towards a reasonable protocol capable of stopping Iran from its headlong rush towards the deployment of nuclear weapons – it becomes ever clearer that the process is designed around legacy issues for the president with no thought given to containing the increasing threat. Hence the understanding by Khamenei's government [correct] that Team Obama desperately wants some shred of tangible achievement at any cost, thus removing whatever leverage the U.S. might have had.

As the shuffling continues, the administration's position steadily weakens, especially regarding the critical issue of verification and inspection, without which any agreement is DOA.

"The official, who spoke on background, was asked the question after telling reporters Monday that the Iranians will not be expected to allow International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors access to "every military site" since that would not be "appropriate," and the United States would never agree to such access to every military site in the U.S." [source, Patrick Goodenough, As Deadline Passes, U.S. Backs Away From ‘Anytime, Anywhere' Access to Iran's Military Sites, CNS News]

There are so many levels involved in this ruse - a public embarrassment - that realists have already concluded that under this CIC, Iran will remain not only unconstrained but enabled, the country being the beneficiary of previously impounded funds which will serve to both pump the economy as well as the theocracy's "peaceful" nuclear R&D program.

While the diplomats enjoy the luxury of historic Vienna's top drawer hotels and dozens of Michelin rated restaurants while occasionally sitting down to play a game in which the outcome is predetermined, once person alone controls the process, Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Khamenei has been perfectly clear that regardless of the wording of any accord, the country's compliance will never be ascertainable.

In a May 20 piece published in the New York Times, verification has already been ruled out.

"Iran's supreme leader vowed Wednesday he will not allow international inspection of Iran's military sites or access to Iranian scientists under any nuclear agreement with world powers." [source, AP via NYT, Iran's Supreme Leader Rejects Access to Military Sites ]

So what are these people actually engaged in doing?

Call it classic diplomacy – a tasteless gavotte, carried out by self-important fops serving a silly populace.

The Obama/Kerry travelling minstrel show is at most a ludicrous spectacle, one fully in accord with T. Roosevelt's classic statement:

"Diplomacy is utterly useless when there is no force behind it. The diplomat is the servant, not the master, of the soldier. There are higher things in this life than the soft and easy enjoyment of material comfort. It is through strife, or the readiness for strife, that a nation must win greatness."

Only a fool would expect more from this bunch in DC.
