French police have arrested a 25-year-old Chechen in connection with the murder of controversial Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh.

Bislan Ismailov was arrested in Tours, central France, last week.

Dutch prosecutors want Mr Ismailov extradited as they suspect he was an accomplice of Van Gogh's alleged killer Mohammed Bouyeri - now awaiting trial.

Van Gogh, a critic of Islam, was shot and nearly decapitated in an Amsterdam street last November.

A militant Islamist diatribe was pinned to his chest with a knife, threatening the scriptwriter who had written his last film, which had denounced violence against women in Islamic society.

Dutch prosecutors claim that Mr Bouyeri, a Dutch Moroccan, was helped by Chechen separatists, among them Mr Ismailov.

Press reports say Mr Ismailov's fingerprints were found on a suicide note left behind by Mr Bouyeri.

Mr Bouyeri, 27, faces charges of murder, terrorism, possession of an illegal firearm and impeding democracy. He was seized by the police shortly after the killing and could be sentenced to life if found guilty.

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands -- Authorities have arrested two Chechen citizens in France and the Netherlands in connection with the November slaying of Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh, prosecutors said Thursday.

One of the suspects was arrested May 18 in Tours, France and was identified under Dutch privacy rules only as Bislan I., 25, prosecution spokesman Rob Meulenbroek said. The second suspect, identified as Marad J., 22, was arrested April 19 in Amsterdam.

Both are believed to have ties to a group of Islamic fundamentalists which prosecutors dubbed the Hofstad network, Meulenbroek said.

A 27-year-old Dutchman, Mohammed Bouyeri, is awaiting trial on a charge of murdering Van Gogh and belonging to the Hofstad network.

Van Gogh was shot and stabbed on an Amsterdam street Nov. 2. The filmmaker was an outspoken critic of the treatment of women under Islam and that was the subject of his last film "Submission." He also wrote a weekly newspaper column and hosted a TV talk show that he sometimes used to provoke and insult religious Muslims, as well as Jews and Christians.

The killer shot Van Gogh, then cut his throat and pinned a five-page note to his chest laced with religious ramblings and threats of further attacks on politicians in the name of radical Islam. The killing set off a wave of retaliatory attacks on Dutch mosques.

Bouyeri was arrested in a shootout with police minutes after the killing. At pretrial hearings, he has said he "wants to be held responsible for his actions," though he stopped short of a confession.

Prosecutors have said they believe Bouyeri had logistical support in carrying out the killing, but have not charged other suspects.

Meulenbroek said fingerprints of one Chechen suspect were found on a suicide note Bouyeri left and fingerprints of the other were found on a cassette tape Bouyeri recorded shortly before the killing.

"We're looking for an explanation of how those fingerprints came to be there, and also whether this is related to the murder of Van Gogh," Meulenbroek said.

Bislan I. will be extradited to the Netherlands within weeks, Meulenbroek said.

Separately, 12 other men were arrested in the month following Van Gogh's death for allegedly belonging to the Hofstad network. They face trial in Rotterdam. Lawyers for the men have said they are all innocent.

The Dutch secret service said several of the 12 Rotterdam suspects received weapons and bomb-making training in Chechnya, the breakaway Russian republic where Islamic rebels have been fighting for more than a decade for independence.

Tsjetsjenen aangehouden in verband met moord Van Gogh

PARIJS - Het Openbaar Ministerie (OM) in Amsterdam heeft de afgelopen weken twee Tsjetsjenen aan laten houden die in relatie worden gebracht met de moord op filmmaker Theo van Gogh. Dat heeft een woordvoerder van het OM donderdag gezegd.

De Franse politie arresteerde op verzoek van de Nederlandse justitie de 25-jarige Tsjetsjeen Bislan I. Half april werd, naar nu pas bekend is geworden, ook de 22-jarige Tsjetsjeen Marat J. in dit verband al in Schiedam opgepakt. Bislan I. kwam in beeld nadat zijn vingerafdrukken waren gevonden op een document in de nalatenschap van Mohammed B., de man die heeft bekend de moord op Van Gogh te hebben gepleegd. Het gaat volgens de woordvoerder van het OM om een vingerafdruk op een afscheidsbrief die B. had geschreven aan zijn ouders. De brief werd gevonden in een huis aan de Hart Nibbrigstraat in Amsterdam-Slotervaart. Hier woonden de vader en zussen van B. I. zou nauwe banden onderhouden met Tsjetsjeense islamistische groepen. Hij is op 18 mei in de stad Tours opgepakt en wacht op uitlevering naar Nederland. De OM-woordvoerder verwacht dat I. begin juni naar Nederland wordt overgebracht. Dan wordt hij in verzekering gesteld en aan de rechter-commissaris voorgeleid. Het onderzoek naar de man loopt. Het is ook nog mogelijk dat de verdachte later wordt gevoegd in het onderzoek naar het vermeende terreurnetwerk de Hofstadgroep. In deze zaak zitten elf verdachten vast. Volgens het OM had Mohammed B. een leidinggevende rol in de Hofstadgroep en stonden alle vermeende leden in contact met hem, onder andere via huisbijeenkomsten bij B. thuis in Amsterdam-West. Verdachte J. komt uit de Tsjetsjeense hoofdstad Grozny. Hij heeft volgens justitie vingerafdrukken achtergelaten op een cassettebandje dat bij Mohammed B. werd gevonden. Deze Tsjetsjeen heeft inmiddels een verklaring afgelegd maar de zegsman van het OM wil hier niet op ingaan, omdat de verdachte in zogenoemde beperkingen zit. Dit betekent dat de betrokken partijen inhoudelijke informatie uit het onderzoek niet naar buiten mogen brengen, omdat dit het onderzoek kan schaden. Van Gogh werd op 2 november in Amsterdam op straat doodgeschoten. De 27-jarige B. liet twee messen in het lichaam van hem achter. Dat is volgens justitie het terroristische netwerk dat achter de moord op Van Gogh zit. Volgens het Franse persbureau AFP zou Bislan I. nauwe banden onderhouden met Tsjetsjeense islamitische groeperingen. Het OM in Amsterdam wil dat niet bevestigen. Volgens een woordvoerder waren de vingerafdrukken van de twee mannen ,,voldoende aanleiding" om arrestatiebevelen te doen uitgaan. Op dit moment worden nog twee verdachten internationaal gezocht: Nouredine el F., een vriend en oud-huisgenoot van Mohammed B., en de Syriër 'Abu Khaled', die door justitie wordt gezien als de geestelijk leider van de Hofstadgroep. De laatste heeft Nederland op 2 november vorig jaar, de dag van de moord, verlaten en is naar Syrië teruggekeerd. Op 11 juli begint het proces tegen Mohammed B., die tot dusver over zijn daad heeft gezwegen.
