A member of the Executive Board of the Inter-Faith Council of Greater Hollywood, Maulana Shafayat Mohammed, who is the imam (minister) of the Darul Uloom Islamic Institute in Pembroke Pines as well as being Chaplain at Memorial Hospital West, Pembroke Pines, has blamed the Tsunami that struck Southeast Asia on December 26 of last year on gays.

He compares the horrific events that killed more than 220,000 people in 12 countries spanning South-East Asia, South Asia, and East Africa (including many children and significantly more women than men), and displaced more than 1.6 million people with the Old Testament/Torah story of what happened at Sodom and Gomorrah, at his website, www.al hikmat.com/tsunami.htm .

He quotes from Asiaweek Magazine that "Southeast Asia is now the No. 1 world destination for tourists looking for sex." After quoting various passages from Christian, Jewish and Moslem religious texts, he concludes by calling "on religious leaders and politicians, who believe in God, to take this Tsunami as a warning. If religious leaders and politicians do not do their job to enjoin good and forbid evil, it is my strong belief that God may just begin to destroy nations as He did with Sodom and Gomorrah, as He did with Pharoah and as He did with the people of Noah. (God's peace and blessings be upon the prophets)." Elsewhere on Darul Uloom's website, he labels Jews and Christians as "perverted transgressors."

Maulana Shafayat Mohamed is listed as Director of the Board of National Conference for Community & Justice (NCCJ). The mission statement of the NCCJ states that: "We are dedicated to fighting bias, bigotry, and racism by promoting understanding and respect among all races, religions, and cultures. This broad-based rather than single-constituency approach makes NCCJ unique, and we work against all forms of discrimination and bias…"

It has also been alleged that Shafayat Mohammed's institute has close connections with terrorists. The website www.militantislammonitor.org has reported that "Maulana Shafayat Mohamed has also played host to an alarming array of now jailed and fugitive terrorists. Dirty bomber wannabe Jose Padilla started his path to Islam at Mohamed's Dar Ul Uloom Islamic Institute, and in 2003 congregants Imran Mandhi and Moessa Shueyb Jokhan were jailed for plotting to blow up FPL power plants, a national guard armory and Jewish businesses.

Al Qaeda trained Adnan Shukrijumah, who law officials dubbed ‘Mohamed Atta's successor' led prayers at Dar Ul Uloom before becoming the subject of an ongoing worldwide manhunt to thwart his dirty bomber aspirations. At least one of the 9/11 hijackers reportedly worshipped at Dar Ul Uloom as well."

Joe Kaufman, the Chairman of Americans Against Hate (AAH) said "Maulana Shafayat Mohammed has participated in numerous ‘interfaith' gatherings describing himself and his madrasa as being ‘liberal,' when in reality they appear to be nothing more than promoters of hate and a safe haven for terrorists."

The Inter-Faith Council of Greater Hollywood claims that "it strives to eliminate inter-group prejudices which distort religious, business, social and political relations and to maintain at all times a society in which a reconciled community and justice are evident."

The Independent attempted to contact Maulana Shafayat Mohammed to allow him to clarify his comments and opinions, but he failed to respond. In addition, other members of the Inter-Faith Council of Greater Hollywood that claims on its website to be "Working for the brotherhood/sisterhood of people" failed to respond to our repeated attempts at reaching them.

The opinion of Maulana Shafayat Mohammed seems to be shared by the folks at Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas led by Pastor Fred Phelps. To quote from their website www.GodHatesFags.com:

"The lands affected by this judgment from God aren't just full of idolatry; we're talking about places (think Thailand) that are hot spots where American businessmen travel for the express purpose of fornicating with young Asian children. It is a thriving industry over there; many of these girls are taken into that business when they are seven years old or younger..."

He goes on to write, "Not to mention the fact that those Asian countries weren't the only ones affected by the tsunami. Do you realize that among the dead and missing are 20,000 Swedes and over 3,000 Americans? Filthy Swedes went to Thailand — world epicenter of child sex traffic — to rape and sodomize little Thai boys and girls... We sincerely hope and pray that all 20,000 Swedes are dead, their bodies bloated on the ground or in mass graves or floating at sea feeding sharks and fishes or in the bellies of thousands of crocodiles washed ashore by tsunamis. These filthy, faggot Swedes have a satanic, draconian law criminalizing Gospel preaching, under which they prosecuted, convicted and sentenced Pastor Ake Green to jail — thereby incurring God's irreversible wrath." http://www.indynews.4t.com/index0210.html
