An Orange County, California resident pleaded guilty on Friday to federal charges accusing him of knowingly providing material support and resources to Al Qaeda.

The indictment charges 24-year-old Sinh Vinh Ngo Nguyen, who also goes by the alias name Hasan Abu Omar Ghannoum, with another count of presenting false information in order to obtain a passport to facilitate an act of international terrorism.

Sources told the Los Angeles Times that Nguyen wanted to become a "foot soldier" for Al Qaida after becoming "radicalized" following his conversion to Islam this past year.

FBI investigators confirmed that Nguyen is a U.S. citizen and was arrested on Friday morning as he was attempting to board a bus heading to Mexico.

"Investigators do not believe Nguyen was traveling with others, nor are they aware of a continuing threat to the public at this time, based on his alleged activities," said FBI advisory.

The suspect was scheduled to make an initial appearance in U.S. District Court in Santa Ana, California later in the day, authorities said.

Nguyen's indictment is the latest in a series of domestic terrorism cases in the U.S.

Last week, 32 year-old Khalid Ouazzani of Kansas City, Missouri, was sentenced to 14 years in prison for conspiring to help send money to finance Al-Qaeda's terrorist activities.

Ouazzani, a native of Morocco and a naturalized U.S. citizen, admitted he worked to support Al-Qaeda from August 2007 to this past February, and pledged an oath of support to the terrorist group in June 2008.

He said he personally provided more than $23,000 to the group and performed other tasks for Al-Qaeda.

One week earlier, a joint US-Australian citizen was jailed for 18 years for his part in a Brooklyn-based Al Qaeda fundraising ring.
