content:encoded">There has been a considerable amount of news in the last week or so, so it is understandable if most have missed this telling and laden-with-lessons news story:
content:encoded">A week ago, Reuters reported that Michael Kramer, a prominent member of the (actually rapidly growing; now with a population of around 120,000) Jewish community in Germany pointed a gun to ward off a young man shouting anti-Jewish abuse who appeared likely to make a physical assault.
content:encoded">According to the Reuters story: "the Central Council of Jews in Germany said its general secretary, Michael Kramer, had endured a barrage of threatening insults from the man after leaving a Berlin synagogue with his two daughters on Wednesday [September 26]."
content:encoded">Kramer deterred the attack by pointing a gun at the man, who had a partially shaven head.
content:encoded">Bild quoted the man as having said to Kramer: "What are you doing here? Go back to where you came from."
content:encoded">Last week's incident was among the latest in a growing number of anti-Jewish incidents in Berlin, as well as throughout Germany and Europe.
content:encoded">The Reuters story also mentioned: "Last month, one of the first rabbis ordained in Germany since the Holocaust, Daniel Alter, was beaten up on a Berlin street in front of his young daughter by four attackers, prompting a seminary to advise its students to avoid wearing skullcaps in public."
content:encoded">As Rabbi Judah Freeman, who serves as a staff writer for Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership, has written in the past: "Will American Jews ... rely on others to protect them? Or will we exercise our G-d given right to defend ourselves while we still can?"
