CAIR wages Jihad against National Review Online : Calls on Muslims to "defend Islam" accuses NRO of "an attack on Prophet Muhammad"

Council of American Islamic Relations pressures Boeing to threaten to stop advertising on NRO if books on Islam aren't pulled

http://www.intervarsity.org/ism/news_item.php?news_id=39

MIM :CAIR's Jihad against America continued this week with an attack on NRO - National Review Online, which CAIR accused of placing links to two books about Islam which they headlined on their press release as "An attack on the Prophet Mohammed'. CAIR demanded that NRO advertiser Boeing withdraw their ads from NRO unless the links to the books were removed .

According to CAIR (whose committment to terrorism precludes truth) the links were removed. MIM is attempting to verify this claim at NRO.

The Islamist intent of CAIR's ' holy war' to censor and intimidate America into dhimmitude was summed up by the organisations press release:

Contact Boeing About National Review's Attack On Prophet Muhammad"
http://cair.com/default.asp?Page=articleView&id=224&theType=AA

"We would like to thank all those who took the time to contact both
National Review and Boeing to defend Islam and the Prophet Muhammad from
defamation," said CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad

MIM: CAIR claims that the advertisement and links to the book "The Life and Religion of Muhamed " and "The Sword of Islam" were pulled after CAIR mobilised their "armies of Allah" via an Action Alert, instructing Muslims to flood Boeing with emails and phone calls demanding that they pull their advertising from National Review Online, if the publication did not stop selling the books which CAIR disapproved of . Boeing claims that it put no pressure on NRO and as of this moment, calls for comment to NRO were not being returned.

Muslims urge Boeing to drop ads from National Review

CAIR says neocon magazine promotes 'anti-Muslim hate'

http://www.baou.com/newswire/main.php?action=recent&rid=20132
by OfficialWire NewsDesk

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- (OfficialWire) -- 03/29/05 -- The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today called on aerospace giant Boeing Co. to drop its advertisements in a magazine that the group says is actively promoting virulently anti-Muslim books that attack Islam and the Prophet Muhammad.

Despite messages of outrage from hundreds of concerned Muslims, National Review magazine continues to promote The Life and Religion of Mohammed on its Internet store. The magazine claims the book exposes "the ugly truth about the founder of the world's most violent religion."

According to the promotional materials, the book is a "guide into the dark mind of [the Prophet] Mohammed." The online review states: "[The author] explains why Mohammed couldn't possibly be a true prophet, and reveals the true sources of his 'revelations.'" It quotes the author as claiming: "Mohammed posed as the apostle of God…while his life is marked by innumerable marriages; and great licentiousness, deeds of rapine, warfare, conquests, unmerciful butcheries, all the time invoking God's holy name to sanction his evil deeds…Mohammed again and again justified his rapine and licentiousness with new 'divine revelations.'"

Another book being promoted by National Review, "The Sword of the Prophet," is described as: "What Muslims, multiculturalists, and the media hope you never find out about Islam." The magazine's review claims that the book "gives us the unvarnished, 'politically incorrect' truth about Islam -- including the shocking facts about its founder, Mohammed; its rise through bloody conquest; its sanctioning of theft, deceit, lust and murder."

In a letter sent today to Boeing CEO James A. Bell, CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad wrote: "I would therefore respectfully request that Boeing address the concerns of Muslims worldwide by withdrawing its advertising support from a magazine that actively promotes anti-Muslim hate."

A copy of that letter will be sent to ambassadors of Muslim and Arab nations in Washington, D.C. (Boeing has a full back-page ad in the latest issue of National Review.) Awad noted that just today, Boeing announced the delivery of the first two Boeing 777-300ER airplanes to Emirates airlines.

CAIR, America's largest Muslim civil liberties group, has 31 offices and chapters nationwide and in Canada. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.

Fr. J.L. Menezes knew Islam up close: as a priest in India, he devoted his priestly life to introducing that nation's tens of millions of Muslims to Christianity. With this life of Mohammed, he left us the record of his appeals: a frank, honest, and exhaustively researched exploration of the life of the "prophet" of Islam, the development and contents of the Koran, and an introduction to various Muslim sects.

The Sword and the Prophet, by Serge Trifkovic

Dr. Trifkovic has done a great service in writing this fairly short and well-researched survey of the history, theology, and (bad) fruits of Islam. He also analyzes how the West has interacted with Islam in recent history, calling our diplomacy "appeasement", and rightly pointing out the many shortcomings in our diplomacy that have contributed to global terrorism against the West. This is a hard-hitting book that makes statements about Islam by President Bush appear very unwise and bereft of a sound understanding of Islam's true heart and orientation, which is jihad (holy war) against the infidels.

If the book has a flaw it is that Dr. Trifkovic does not make a distinction between Islam the religion and Islamism the 20th-century-style ideology that draws heavily from Marxist-Leninist thought, Nazism and Facism. Dr. Pipes (author of the next book) contends that Islam per se is not a threat, whereas Islamism is a serious threat. Dr. Trifkovic writes convincingly that Islam's theology, history and impact on the world should definitely lead us to conclude that it is not, as many Western academic elites and the news media would have us believe, a "religion of peace." Dr. Pipes, on the other hand, would say that only the Islamist political ideology that draws from and adulterates Islam is the problem, and that we should not confuse the faith and the ideology. Both men write convincingly.

MIM: NRO editor Rich Lowry's version of the story was tucked away in a blog entry on 'The Corner' and does not answer the question as to if they removed the links to the books due to pressure.

THE BOOK BUSINESS [Rich Lowry ]
Some folks have e-mailed in asking about a book brouhaha going on in some parts of the blogosphere involving us. Here is what happened: A National Review Book Service e-mail blast for the book "The Life And Religion of Mohammed" by Rev. J.L Menezes was sent out a couple of weeks ago to the magazine's (opted-in) e-mail list. The ad copy in the e-mail, which invoked "the dark mind of Mohammed" among other things, was written by author Robert Spencer. But it went out under the name of a member of NR's publishing staff, who should have, but didn't review it. The book service is a joint project with a publisher who has been responsible for what books to feature in this service and how best to publicize them.

So, National Review didn't sit down and say, "Hey, let's have a public fight over Mohammed and aggressively market books about him," then reverse course. In contrast, Robert Spencer and some others on the right feel very strongly that it is important to discredit Mohammed and Islam as such in order to win the war on terror. That's certainly their prerogative, but it is not the tack NR has taken, even as we have vigorously attacked Islamic terrorism and supported the war against it. CAIR has been agitating for us to apologize for weeks, but we obviously aren't going to apologize for a position that isn't our own. We are, of course, more than happy to defend our own actual positions against CAIR, or any other noxious grievance group.

----------------------------------------

MIM:Robert Spencer replies to Lowry on his Jihad Watch website :

http://www.jihadwatch.org/archives/2005/03/005549print.html

Fair enough, except that Lowry has me wrong. I do not in the least "feel very strongly that it is important to discredit Mohammed and Islam as such in order to win the war on terror," and in writing this sentence Lowry betrays a rather severe misunderstanding of the nature of my work and that of others.

So, to clarify: I am not in the least interested in discrediting Muhammad and Islam as an end in itself. Nor do I think that such a discrediting would be of much use in anti-terror efforts. The importance of critical examination of Muhammad and Islam comes from the fact that jihad terrorists around the world -- from Osama bin Laden to Omar Bakri in England and Abu Bakar Bashir in Indonesia and everywhere in between -- invoke Muhammad and Islam to explain their goals and justify their actions, as well as to win recruits among Muslims. When they do that, it becomes important for non-Muslims, and in particular those in government and law enforcement positions, to know how they do it, so that such efforts to invigorate and expand the jihadist ranks can be effectively countered. In that case, a refusal to acknowledge these unpleasant elements of Islam becomes a hindrance to anti-terror and human rights efforts.

To wit: I would never have thought it a matter of importance to non-Muslims that Muhammad took a 9-year-old bride at the age of 52 (see Sahih Bukhari, vol. 5, bk. 58, no. 236) were it not for the fact that child marriage is rampant in the Islamic world, and that that is a public health and human rights issue. To combat it effectively, there must be an honest appraisal by Muslims of the influence of Muhammad's example here, and a forthright willingness to stand up and say that his example in this must not be followed today. Whether or not there is any hope that Muslims will actually do that in any significant group is another question, but if it is not done, it is certain that the problem will continue.

Another example with immediate relevance to the war on terror is the Qur'an's "Verse of the Sword" (9:5), which includes the command to "slay the unbelievers wherever you find them," and for which Osama bin Laden praised Allah in a sermon broadcast on Al-Jazeera in 2003: "Praise be to Allah who revealed the verse of the Sword to his servant and messenger [the Prophet Muhammad], in order to establish truth and abolish falsehood."

In the face of that use of the Qur'an and Islam by terrorists -- of which I could give thousands of examples -- it becomes imperative to know what the Qur'an, as well as Islamic tradition and law, actually say about warfare against unbelievers. For we cannot mount an effective resistance against a threat we do not know or wish to acknowledge. If Lowry or others at NR are expecting the Vast Majority of Peaceful Muslims to have their back in the war on terror and fight with them against the Tiny Minority of Extremists, they may be unpleasantly surprised. But they won't even know that without a thorough investigation of the Islamic sources, such as the books they dropped and my own books actually provide. This is not about "discrediting Muhammad and Islam" for its own sake, but about knowing how jihadists think, how they gain recruits, and what their overall plans are. And if you think it is not important to know that about your enemy in a war, you have just told me that you are resigned to being defeated.

Misapprehension in this area can lead to immense miscalculations. Recently Powell and Rice both opined that tsunami relief would show Muslims that Americans aren't all that bad. That statement in itself shows ignorance of the teachings of Islam about unbelievers, and ignorance of the history of the region, and how jihadist preachers used similar disasters to stir up hatred of the unbelievers, even as those unbelievers were helping them. It was not wrong for them to give the aid, but it was wrong for them to expect anything as a result. This is a relatively innocuous example; many more sinister ones can be drawn from the Wilsonian adventure in Iraq.

Also, by removing the books, NR has tacitly acknowledged that CAIR was right: all they were was anti-Muslim hate speech. That seems to be established also by Lowry's Corner post above. This is extremely important -- and disastrous -- because, as I show in my article, everything with which CAIR took issue can be readily established from Islamic sources. That suggests that CAIR is trying to keep Americans from knowing unpleasant truths about Islam, which will also keep them from guarding themselves effectively from Muslims who are acting upon those unpleasant directives. It also gives CAIR a victory in their efforts to silence all criticism of Islam as "hate speech" -- and again, it looks as if Lowry obliged them because he agrees that any examination of the Islamic roots of jihad violence is out of bounds in anti-terror efforts.

Yet right now, somewhere in the world, someone is explaining from the Qur'an and Sunnah why Muslims must wage jihad against unbelievers. But let's not think about that. Let's just roll over and go back to sleep.

MIM: Robert Spencer is also quoted in this World Net Daily article:

"He believes CAIR "did succeed in intimidating NR into withdrawing the book, along with Serge Trifkovic's 'Sword of the Prophet.'"

Spencer wrote on his weblog Jihad Watch, however, that after a discussion with National Review editor Rich Lowry, he "can see how this might not be a straight capitulation."

Spencer pointed out he did not write the ad copy for "The Life and Religion of Mohammed" for National Review. He said he received no remuneration from sales of the book by National Review or anyone else.

"My stand on this issue was not motivated by anything but annoyance at the fact that CAIR is trying to demonize truth-tellers about Islam," he said. .."

CAIR pressures National Review to nix ads
Books deemed 'Islamophobic,' group lobbied advertiser Boeing
Posted: March 31, 2005

http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=43559

A controversial Muslim lobby group pressured a leading conservative magazine to remove its Internet sale of two books about the Islamic prophet Muhammad, calling the titles "virulently anti-Muslim" and "Islamophobic."

The Washington, D.C.-based Council on American-Islamic Relations – which has seen three of its former employees indicted on federal terrorism charges – said National Review's decision to stop selling "The Life and Religion of Mohammed" and "The Sword of the Prophet" came after hundreds of concerned Muslims contacted the magazine and the Boeing Co., one of the magazine's advertisers.

"We would like to thank all those who took the time to contact both National Review and Boeing to defend Islam and the Prophet Muhammad from defamation," said CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad.

In its lobby campaign, CAIR complained that the promo National Review posted for "The Life and Religion of Mohammed" said the book exposes "the ugly truth about the founder of the world's most violent religion."

The promo touts the book as a "guide into the dark mind of Mohammed." It says the author "explains why Mohammed couldn't possibly be a true prophet, and reveals the true sources of his 'revelations.'"

The author of the book, according to the review, writes, "Mohammed posed as the apostle of God ... while his life is marked by innumerable marriages; and great licentiousness, deeds of rapine, warfare, conquests, unmerciful butcheries, all the time invoking God's holy name to sanction his evil deeds. ... Mohammed again and again justified his rapine and licentiousness with new 'divine revelations.'"

The other book, "The Sword of the Prophet," is described as, "What Muslims, multiculturalists, and the media hope you never find out about Islam." The magazine's review claims the book "gives us the unvarnished, 'politically incorrect' truth about Islam -- including the shocking facts about its founder, Mohammed; its rise through bloody conquest; its sanctioning of theft, deceit, lust and murder."

Awad sent a letter to Boeing CEO James A. Bell, saying, "I would therefore respectfully request that Boeing address the concerns of Muslims worldwide by withdrawing its advertising support from a magazine that actively promotes anti-Muslim hate."

CAIR explained that Boeing had a full back-page ad in the latest issue of National Review and recently accounced delivery of the first two Boeing 777-300ER airplanes to Emirates Airlines, the official carrier of the Muslim Gulf state, United Arab Emirates.

Scholar and author of books about Islam and terrorism, Robert Spencer, said in a column for FrontPage Magazine that he wrote the ad for "The Life and Religion of Mohammed."

"CAIR's campaign was revealing of what CAIR wants Americans to know -- and not to know -- about Islam and Muhammad," Spencer said.

He believes CAIR "did succeed in intimidating NR into withdrawing the book, along with Serge Trifkovic's 'Sword of the Prophet.'"

Spencer wrote on his weblog Jihad Watch, however, that after a discussion with National Review editor Rich Lowry, he "can see how this might not be a straight capitulation."

"It is important sometimes to choose one's battles, and although NR and I might not always agree about which battles to fight and which ones to let go by, I respect the good work they have done in raising awareness of jihad terror, and am confident they will do more in the future," Spencer said.

Spencer noted that CAIR's Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper fumed about "The Life and Religion of Mohammed," saying "this anti-Muslim screed is the literary equivalent of 'The Protocols of the Elders of Zion' and should not be promoted by a publication that has any sense of decency. The National Review must clarify its position on Islamophobic hate speech and offer a public apology for promoting a book that so viciously attacks the faith of one-fifth of the world's population." Hooper added that "anti-Muslim rhetoric often leads to discrimination and even violence."

But Spencer contends the book is not "anti-Muslim hate literature," noting it was written more than 80 years ago by Fr. J. L. Menezes, a Roman Catholic priest who served as a missionary in India.

"I have read it, and there is nothing inflammatory or inciteful in it; in fact, it is suffused with a pastoral love for Muslims," Spencer said.

Spencer argued: "The author, as a Christian priest, obviously did not accept Muhammad's claim to be a prophet. If it is Islamophobic hate literature for a book to explain 'why Mohammed couldn't possibly be a true prophet,' then the Christian faith itself is Islamophobic and hateful."

The book doesn't say anything false about Muhammad, Spencer maintains, noting that everything reported about his life comes from Muslim sources.

"CAIR may differ with Fr. Menezes's assessment of this material, but it can't very well deny its existence," Spencer said. "Muslim apologists try to justify Muhammad's marriages, battles, and killings in various ways, but it would be the height of chutzpah to deny they took place at all. Would CAIR, in contrast, paint for us a picture of Muhammad the Rotarian?"

Spencer added, "Now that CAIR has succeeded in intimidating NR into silence and getting them to drop this book, it will be a victory for those who don't want Americans to know the uncomfortable details about Muhammad that are in the book. Unfortunately, however, jihad terrorists around the world today know these elements of the life of Muhammad quite well, and are imitating them. Ignorance of them on the part of Americans will only make us more vulnerable."

As WorldNetDaily reported, CAIR recently succeeded in convincing Fox television to air a disclaimer along with an episode of the series "24," which breaks current entertainment-media convention by depicting terrorists as Muslims.

CAIR said it sent representatives to meet Jan. 12 with network officials because it was concerned that the series' portrayal of a Muslims family as a terrorist "sleeper cell" may "cast a shadow of suspicion over ordinary American Muslims and could increase Islamophobic stereotyping and bias."

MIM: The CAIR press release claimed that "hundreds contact Boeing" to urge withdrawal of magazine ads. It is time that CAIR is challenged as to who has designated them as 'defenders of the faith' and sole arbitrators of what is acceptable to Muslims.. Not only is CAIR able to command and mobilize their cadres to bombard individuals and institutions which emails and phone calls in campaigns of intimidation and harassment, CAIR members are received with deference as legitimate representatives of the Muslim community, despite the fact that the organisation was named as a defendant in a 9/11 terrorism lawsuit, and is under investigation for ties to terrorism, with 3 of their former employees jailed on terrorism related charges.

Note that the CAIR press release states that "The National Review Online" has apparently removed advertisements for what is has termed "virulently anti Muslim books attacking the Prophet Muhammed". (The last time MIM looked, the Constitution had not been replaced by the Koran). The press release would have readers believe that not only did no one at NRO appraise CAIR of the fact that there are laws protecting free speech, but they caved into threats and removed the links upon threats of losing Boeing as an advertiser. Representatives of Boeing have denied putting any pressure on NRO, and MIM is still awaiting clarification of NRO's account of why the links were removed.

MIM: CAIR Press release of March 25th 2005 calls on "the prominent neo conservative magazine" to "clarify it's policy on anti -Muslim hate ". The press release makes a gratuitious comparison between a book which is critical of islam and the anti semitic forgery The Protocols of The Elders of Zion. The Protocols is a hoax which proports to be an blueprint for Jewish world domination and is circulated to incite anti semitism. To compare a deliberate hoax and forgery which was written as a piece of anti semitic propaganda to a book investigating the mind of Mohamed, and the documented violence perpetrated in the name of Islam, is typical of CAIR's MO. At the time CAIR also claimed that they "demanded an apology from an Arab group who was publishing it" as usual, this was not documented, nor was CAIR asked to provide proof of this claim. CAIR also claimed that Boeing put pressure on NRO to pull the ads for the books about Islam, but no proof was provided that this was the case, and Boeing has denied pressuring NRO in any way.

"...In 2002, CAIR called on an Arab-American publication to apologize for publishing excerpts from "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion," a 19th century anti-Semitic forgery used to justify the persecution of Jews.

Dr. Daniel Pipes revealed that :

"In fact, CAIR did not call for an apology, much less condemn the publication. This inaccuracy is typical of CAIR's relationship with the truth. (March 17, 2005)http://www.danielpipes.org/blog/428

National Review Silent on Anti-Muslim Hate

UPDATE: The National Review magazine continues to promote a virulently Islamophobic book attacking the Prophet Muhammad on their Internet store. Last week, CAIR called on the prominent national neoconservative magazine to clarify its policy on anti-Muslim hate following revelations that the publication distributed an Internet
advertisement for the book that, according to the magazine, is a "guide into the dark mind of [the Prophet] Mohammed" and the "world's most violent religion."

The National Review's online promotional materials state: "[The author] explains why Mohammed couldn't possibly be a true prophet, and reveals the
true sources of his 'revelations.'" It quotes the author as claiming: "Mohammed posed as the apostle of God&while his life is marked by innumerable marriages; and great licentiousness, deeds of rapine, warfare,
conquests, unmerciful butcheries, all the time invoking God's holy name to sanction his evil deeds."

According to the National Review, the book shows how "Mohammed again and again justified his rapine and licentiousness with new 'divine revelations.'" CAIR said the book "is the literary equivalent of 'The Protocols of the Elders of Zion.'" (NOTE: In 2002, CAIR called on an
Arab-American publication to apologize for publishing excerpts from "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion," a 19th century anti-Semitic forgery used to justify the persecution of Jews.)

ACTION REQUESTED: (As always, be POLITE. National Review WILL use any hostile comments to further defame Islam and Muslims.) Contact National Review to respectfully that they reconsider promoting a book that attacks the faith of one-fifth of the world's population and harms America's image in the Muslim world.

CAIR and The Protocols of the Elders of Zion In a statement today, the Council on American-Islamic Relations asserts:

In 2002, CAIR called on an Arab-American publication to apologize for publishing excerpts from "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion," a 19th century anti-Semitic forgery used to justify the persecution of Jews.

As the author of the article that exposed that publication (see "The Paterson ‘Protocols'"), I remember the incident well. Yes, CAIR did respond to the news of the Protocols being published by the Arab Voice in Paterson, New Jersey, but exceedingly weakly. Ibrahim Hooper spoke twice on the subject:

In fact, CAIR did not call for an apology, much less condemn the publication. This inaccuracy is typical of CAIR's relationship with the truth. (March 17, 2005)

ACTION REQUESTED: (As always, be POLITE. Hostile comments can and WILL be used to further defame Muslims and Islam.)

CONTACT BOEING to request that it reconsider advertising in a magazine that actively promotes anti-Muslim hate and defames the Prophet Muhammad. Remind company executives that Boeing does, or hopes to do billions of dollars worth of business with the Muslim world.
