Synagouge Attacked in Tunesia

February 1 2011- Militant Islam Monitor-A synagogue in Gabe Tunesia was attacked and set on fire destroying a Torah scroll. Jewish owned cars were damaged. Lawlessness and looting have plaqued Tunesia in the wake of riots which resulted in the country's leader fleeing abroad after a 23 year rule.

Peres Trabelsi, the spokesman for the Tunesian Jewish community which numbers 2,000 said;

"I condemn this action and I believe those who did it want to create divisions between Jews and Muslims in Tunisia who have lived for decades in peace." http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/142083

The Israeli Foreign ministry asked through a third party that authorities in Tunesia do all they can to protect Jewish institutions. In 2002 Al Qaeda terrorists killed 21 people in a synagouge in Djerba.

Tunesian Jews Ask For Govt. Protection

The head of the Tunisian Jewish community, Roger Bismuth, met over the weekend with the new Prime Minister of Tunisia, Mohammed Ranushi, and asked for his help in defending the community against Muslim fanatics. Last Friday, dozens of Muslim fanatics gathered outside the community's main synagogue and threatened Jewish worshippers. Police moved in after the threats, and they have remained stationed outside the synagogue since last Friday.

Speaking to Israel Radio Tuesday, Bismuth said that Ranushi promised him that he would defend the Jewish community. Tunisia has a Jewish population of about 1,600, all of them living either on the island of Djerba or the capital city of Tunis.

"Protesters demanding the ouster of their new unity government in Tunisia are also now calling for 'Death to the Jews.'

A local source who spoke exclusively with Israel National News on condition of anonymity for fear of retribution warned this week "the situation is not getting better for the Jews."..
