Dutch Catholic School Reprimanded for Banning Headscarf

January 7, 2011

The Commission for Equal Treatment has issued a reprimand to a Dutch Catholic elementary school for forbidding a Muslim student to wear a headscarf. The CET has determined that the school is discriminating on the basis of religion. According to Trouw: "The school claims that the wearing of a headscarf is contrary to the Catholic identity of the school" and that the school also bans the wearing of hats and caps in the classrooms. The CET determined that the school's identity is not endangered.
