Somali Born Terrorism Plotter Attended Oregon High School and University

November 29, 2010

Mohamed Osman Mohamud the terrorist wannabe who was caught in an FBI sting operation in which he tried to detonate a van filled with explosives at a crowded Christmas tree lighting in Oregon was born in Somalia and attended high school in Oregon and was enrolled in Oregon State University until he recently dropped out.

According to the FBI Mohamud wanted to kill and injure as many people as possible and did not back out of the plan even when given the opportunity.

He was described as a "normal teenager" from a "nice" family. In one of the emails he sent to an FBI agent he declared that "living in the U.S. was a sin".

The Mohamud case is a very troubling and shows that homegrown "freelance" terrorism is on the rise in the United States. Scores of youth in the Somali American community have left for Somalia to train and fight in jihad and one of the youths became the first American suicide bomber. It also indicates that many Somali Muslims have failed to integrate into American society despite residing in the United States for years and pose a growing threat to national security being in possession of American nationality. Terrorism experts have expressed the fear that Somali Americans will be sent back to the United States to commit attacks here.
