Paks In Danger Of Losing Control Of Nukes

July 26, 2008 - San Francisco, CA - PipeLineNews.org - Pakistan's new political leadership has been unable to halt the country's slide towards an Islamist inspired state of anarchy.

Numerous East Asian reports are making it clear that rather than checking the tide of radicalization, Pakistan's shaky coalition government's strategy of appeasement appears to be hastening it.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman head of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, a pro Taliban/al-Qaeda party and also a member of the Pak governing coalition, was recently quoted as stating, "The North West Frontier province is breaking away from Pakistan. That is what is happening. That is the reality." [source, The Autstalian, http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,24078316-2703,00.html]

What makes the disposition of the NW Frontier important, aside from it being an important political barometer, is that it is believed to be housing the majority of Pakistan's nuclear weapons.

In what is perhaps the diplomatic understatement of the year, U.S. Secty of State Condoleeza Rice, who is in Australia said that, "Pakistan does need to do more."

It is unclear what really can be done given that the Pak central government under its new Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, has neither the will nor the ability at this point to reverse the terrible precedent it set, when it established a truce with the Taliban in April and engaged in a series of off-again on-again negotiations with its leader Baitullah Mehsud.

Since the time of the ill-considered truce, Taliban inspired violence along Afghanistan's Eastern border has been up nearly 50% over the previous year. http://www.pipelinenews.org/index.cfm?page=pakid=7.26.08%2Ehtm
