Jews Attacked in Uzbekistan and Germany

(IsraelNN.com) A Jew in Uzbekistan was murdered and a Chabad rabbi in Germany was stabbed in the past few days.
Mark Weil, a theater director in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, was found murdered near his home Thursday night, according to theYediot Acharonot newspaper. There were stab wounds all over his body.
Police said the murder was carried out by two men and was believed to have been anti-Semitic. Weil was involved in the local Jewish community and founded a theater that often hosted Israeli drama and literature festivals.
In Germany, Chabad emissary Rabbi Schneur Zalman Gurevitch was stabbed by an Arabic-speaking attacker in Frankfurt's financial district.
The 42-year-old rabbi was walking home from synagogue through Frankfurt's West End area on Friday night when an Arabic-speaking man approached him. He said something in Arabic and when the rabbi said he didn't understand, yelled in German for him to "die" while stabbing him in the stomach.
The rabbi made it to a local hospital and told police that the man had fled with two women. He is in stable condition after an operation. Uzbek Theater Director Killed

MOSCOW (AP) — Mark Weil, an Uzbek theater director whose productions caused controversy in the tightly controlled former Soviet republic, was stabbed to death outside his home, a theater spokeswoman said Friday. He was 55.
Weil was attacked in front of his apartment building in Uzbekistan's capital, Tashkent, late Thursday night, said Oksana Khrupun, a spokeswoman for the Ilkhom theater. She said he died on the operating table at a hospital.
Actors at the theater, reached by telephone, said Weil was taken to the hospital by neighbors who described seeing two young men in baseball caps waiting for the director in front of his building.
Police were investigating, but refused to say whether they had identified any suspects, Khrupun said. Calls to the police were not answered.
The actors, who had rushed to the hospital, said Weil was not robbed and that the director said before the operation that he did not know his assailants.
"To the last minute, he kept talking about tomorrow's premiere," said musical director Artyom Kim.
Ilkhom, which Weil founded in 1976, was the first independent theater in the Soviet Union. He gained popularity for staging uncensored productions that combined elements of Uzbek folk theater, Italian commedia dell'arte, absurdist plays and pantomime.
"Our credo is not to repeat ourselves, and each new project obliterates everything we've done before," Weil told The Associated Press in 2006.
Khripun said the director's last words were, "I'm opening the season tomorrow, whatever happens."
The actors said the premiere — a production of The Oresteia by ancient Greek playwright Aeschylus — would open Friday night.
After the fall of the Soviet Union, Weil's theater began participating in festivals throughout the world, and he directed productions in Moscow and Seattle.
Sarah Nash Gates, who collaborated with Weil as executive director of the School of Drama at the University of Washington in Seattle, fought to keep her composure in a telephone interview. She recalled Weil downplaying U.S. State Department warnings of lawlessness in Uzbekistan while welcoming Washington students visiting Ilkhom.
"He always said the theater never had any enemies," Gates said.
"He had a gift for a director of really getting to the core of the material," she added. "and then he could lead actors to demonstrate that."
Ilkhom has stood out as an oasis in Uzbek theater life, which has been hit by economic hardships and a talent drain.
Some of Ilkhom's productions touched on gay love, a taboo topic in a predominantly Muslim country where homosexuality is punishable by up to two years in jail.

Demnach habe der Täter "Scheiß-Jude, ich bring Dich um" gerufen, bevor er zustach. Inzwischen wurde auch ein Phantombild des Täters veröffentlicht. Für Hinweise ist eine Belohnung von 2000 Euro ausgesetzt.

"Die Saat für solche Motive wird von Hasspredigern auch in islamischen Gemeinden in Deutschland gelegt", erklärte Dieter Graumann, der zweite Vizepräsident des Zentralrats am Wochenende. Führende Vertreter muslimischer Verbände müssten sich nun fragen lassen, "was sie konkret gegen Hassprediger und die wachsende Radikalisierung unter jungen Muslimen unternehmen". Auch Hessens Ministerpräsident Koch zeigte sich schockiert über die "perfide Tat, die wir nur mit Entsetzen und Empörung aufnehmen können und auf das Schärfste verurteilen".
Der verletzte Rabbiner ist nach einer Not-Operation inzwischen außer Lebensgefahr. Er war am Freitagabend mit zwei Freunden in Frankfurt am Main unterwegs gewesen. Dabei habe er eine Kippa, eine jüdische Kopfbedeckung getragen. Plötzlich sei der Rabbiner von einem Mann in "arabisch klingenden Worten" angesprochen worden, berichteten die Freunde des Opfers nach Polizeiangaben. Als der Rabbiner nachfragte, habe der Täter auf Deutsch "Scheiß-Jude, ich bring Dich um" gesagt und mit einem Messer einmal auf ihn eingestochen. Anschließend seien der Täter sowie zwei Frauen, die ihn begleitet hatten, geflohen. Zeugen beschrieben ihn als "Südländer", "möglicherweise Araber". Er soll kurze dunkle Haare haben, zwischen 20 bis 30 Jahre alt und von mittlerer Größe sein.
"No-Go-Areas" auch im Westen
Durch den Messerstich erlitt der 42-jährige Rabbiner eine Bauchverletzung, er wurde in eine nahegelegene Klinik gebracht und operiert. Die Frankfurter Polizei konnte den Mann inzwischen vernehmen, veröffentlichte jedoch aus ermittlungstaktischen Gründen noch keine Einzelheiten.
"Ich habe das Opfer bereits im Krankenhaus besucht und bin schockiert und wütend", sagte die Präsidentin des Zentralrats, Charlotte Knobloch. Womöglich müsse die Debatte um sogenannte "No-Go-Areas" auf den Westen ausgeweitet werden. Als "No-Go-Areas" werden Regionen bezeichnet, in denen der Aufenthalt für Ausländer gefährlich sein könnte. Knobloch und andere Politiker hatten von solchen Regionen etwa nach der jüngsten Hetzjagd auf Inder im sächsischen Mügeln gesprochen.
