Jewish students in Belgium attacked by cinder block throwing Muslims who lay siege to building defy police

The group of 60 13- to 15-year-olds arrived in Beringen on Nov. 30. As they arrived at their hostel in a largely Muslim neighborhood, 10 local Muslims approached the building, throwing stones at it and shouting anti-Semitic epithets. Leaders of the Jewish group called police. Undeterred by the police's arrival, the youths continued throwing stones at the building. The group returned to Antwerp that night, accompanied to the highway by a police escort. The attackers appeared in a district court over the weekend and were sentenced to community service. Claude Marinower, a Jewish member of the Belgian Federal Parliament, announced that he "will raise the issue with the ministers of justice and the interior." Forum, an Antwerp-based Jewish-interest group, called for "drastic measures to guarantee the safety of all youth throughout Belgium. A failure to do so would endanger our democracy."

Beringen geschokt na racistisch incident

ma 04/12/06 - In Beringen is vorige donderdag een groep joodse leerlingen bekogeld met stenen. Er zouden ook antisemitische leuzen zijn geroepen. Het Forum der joodse organisaties reageert verontwaardigd en eist maatregelen.

De kinderen waren op bezoek in de vroegere mijngebouwen. Toen ze daar aankwamen, wierpen enkele plaatselijke, allochtone jongeren met stenen.

De jongeren zouden ook antisemitische leuzen hebben geroepen. Ook de ramen van de woning waar de joodse leerlingen verbleven, werden ingegooid.

De politie kon de gemoederen na een uur bedaren en de groepen uit elkaar halen. De daders werden opgepakt.

Het Forum van joodse organisaties reageert geschokt en eist maatregelen van de regering.
