Half Muslim half Flemish Miss Brussels multi kulti poster girl becomes face of terror and crime - says Israel should be wiped off the map

Last September Halima Chehaïma, the 18-year old daughter of a Moroccan father and a Flemish mother, was elected Miss Brussels. Until next week Ms Chehaïma was also the absolute favorite of the bookmakers for the election of Miss Belgium next month. She was thought to be an excellent candidate to symbolize the multicultural paradise that Belgium has become. However, a girl's dream was shattered.

Ould Haj, who has been convicted three times so far for armed robberies, is soon to stand trial for torturing the 84-year old Maria Reyntjes. When he broke into the latter's home in November 2003 and found only 500 euros (650 dollars) he flew into a rage, broke the old lady's legs with a hammer and set her hair on fire. At the time he was Chehaïma's sweetheart, though she claims they were just friends.

Last July Ould Haj was able to escape from jail (easy in Belgium: he said he was someone else and was allowed to walk out). Meanwhile, however, Halima Chehaïma had fallen in love with an Albanian criminal. When Ould Haj encountered the Albanian last week the two men started quarrelling, whereupon the latter knifed the former twice in the neck. Ould Haj survived the assault, was taken to hospital and arrested. The police are currently investigating whether Miss Brussels had been visiting Ould Haj in his Brussels hide-out and whether she helped to keep him out of their hands.

"There are innocent people who are suffering and dying. The world closes their eyes and accepts the fact that Israel plays the victim."

If she would be in power she would make sure that "Israel give back the land to the Palestinian people"

"I go regularly to meetings over Palestine and demonstrations against the war".

Miss Brussel komt op voor PVDA+ in Molenbeek

Vorige zaterdag werd een nieuwe Miss Brussel gekozen. Haar naam is Halima Chehaima, ze is 18 en kandidaat voor PVDA+ in Molenbeek. Een portret.

Ze woont vier hoog, in een appartementsblok in de wijk Zwarte Vijvers in Molenbeek. In de inkomhal hangen affiches, want Halima is, net als haar moeder, kandidaat voor PVDA+ in Molenbeek. "Ik kan het nog altijd niet geloven", vertelt ze in perfect Nederlands. Maar net als haar moeder en de vijf andere kinderen spreekt ze even vlot Frans. En een vleugje Arabisch. Ze is dan ook geboren in Gent en heeft een Belgische moeder en een vader van Marokkaanse origine: "Ik ben trots op mijn afkomst. Mijn verkiezing bewijst dat Brussel een multiculturele stad is"

Nochtans heeft de jury haar niet alleen voor haar afkomst en voor haar onbetwistbare schoonheid verkozen - overigens unaniem, een uniek feit in de geschiedenis van deze missverkiezing ­, maar zeker ook voor haar originaliteit. "Elk meisjemoest een eigen act brengen. Ik bracht een hindoe-dans in een prachtig hindoe-kleed", dat Linda Design, mijn styliste, voor mij had gemaakt". En ongetwijfeld spelen haar openheid en hartelijkheid ook een rol. Dat zijn de eigenschappen die haar beste vriendin het meest in haar apprecieert. Zij omschrijft Halima liefst met één woord: hartelijk.

Voor Halima wordt zo een kinderdroom waar. Al heel jong volgde ze missverkiezingen op tv. Sinds haar 13 is ze ook gepassioneerd door alles wat met mode te maken heeft.

Het succes dat ze nu kent, is dat van het hele gezin. Haar vader, Ben Haïssa, taxichauffeur, haar broers Karim (14) en Younès (10), haar zusjes Shakira (4) en Rania (2) allemaal hebben ze Halima gesteund in dit avontuur. En het meest van al nog haar moeder Elka. "Ze wilde kost was kost tonen dat ze iets te bieden heeft. Voor mij hoefde dat echt niet, ik wist dat zo ook wel".

Toch liefst tolk of journalist

Halima vreest nu dat ze het wel een beetje druk zal krijgen. Want dit eerste succes opent de deur naar een volgende missverkiezing: in december komt de verkiezing van Miss België er al aan. "En mijn agenda staat nu al overvol", zegt ze lachend. Maar ze blijft met de voeten op de grond. "Het zal misschien moeilijk worden, maar ik wil absoluut mijn school afmaken". Ze zit nu in haar zesde jaar aan het Emmanuel Hiel-atheneum. Ze is dan wel heel intens met mode bezig, maar later wil ze toch liefst tolk of journalist worden. "Alleszins iets met talen", hoopt ze.

Wat er gebeurt in Palestina houdt Halima al heel lang bezig. "Het zijn allemaal onschuldige mensen die daar lijden en sterven. De wereld sluit de ogen en accepteert dat Israël het slachtoffer speelt".

Als zij daarvoor de macht zou hebben, dan zou ze ervoor zorgen "dat Israël het land aan het Palestijnse volk teruggeeft".

In afwachting is ze dus kandidaat op de lijst PVDA+ in Molenbeek, waar ze uiteraard de jongste kandidaat is.

"Ik denk dat dit ook belangrijk is voor de wijk. Ik ken de mensen van de PVDA, daarom ook wil ik hen steunen. Ik ging geregeld naar bijeenkomsten over Palestina en naar betogingen tegen de oorlog". Ook de komende uitdaging gaat ze samen met haar moeder te lijf. Want ook zij is kandidaat PVDA+.
