ADC Update:
Senate Democrats Confer with Arab and Muslim Americans

Washington, DC, Oct. 10--Arab-American and Muslim-American leaders met
today with Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle and other members of the
Senate Democratic Steering and Coordination Committee. Senator Daschle
and Senator John Kerry, Chairman of the Steering Committee, chaired the
meeting. Other Senators participating in the meeting included: Hillary
Clinton (D-NY), Christopher Dodd (D-CT), Daniel Inouye (D-HI), Edward
Kennedy (D-MA), Tom Harkin (D-IA), Patty Murray (D-WA), Jay Rockefeller
(D-WV), Harry Reid (D-NV), Jon Corzine (D-NJ), Debbie Stabenow (D-MI),
Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), Richard Durbin (D-IL), Daniel Akaka (D-HI),
Russell Feingold (D-WI), Paul Wellstone (D-MN) Mary Landrieu (D-LA) and
Byron Dorgan (D-ND).

The agenda of the meeting focussed on the most effective ways to promote
tolerance and acceptance in light of the backlash against Arabs and
Muslims since September 11. The Senators were briefed about the
difficulties faced by members of the community and were urged to remain
engaged in defending Arab and Muslim civil liberties. The participants
also raised various issues pertaining to foreign policy and national
security including the political implications of the ongoing campaign
against terror.

ADC President Ziad Asali described the meeting as "one of the most
impressive and productive meetings we have ever had with members of the
Senate. The discussion was frank, substantive and very useful to all

Jahshan and national board member Hani Findakly.
