Radical Ex-Con NY Imam Placed On Suspension For Comments Made At Muslim Conference
March 14, 2006 - Washington, DC - PipeLinenews.org - Imam Umar Abdul Jalil a supervisor of prison chaplains has been suspended, with pay by New York City mayor Bloomberg for remarks he made at the Muslim Students Association [MSA] Westzone Conference on April 15 and 16 last year in Arizona.
Jalil is an ex-con [Attica] and the Imam of Masjid Sabur mosque in Harlem.
His vitriolic speeches before the MSA were recorded by Steven Emerson's "Investigative Project."
Jalil was quoted as saying:
"They [some Muslim inmates] are not charged with anything, they are not entitled to any rights, they are interrogated. Some of them are literally tortured and we found this in the Metropolitan Correctional Facility in Manhattan. But they literally are torturing people...We have terrorists defining who a terrorist is, but because they have the weight of legitimacy, they get away with it...We know that the greatest terrorists in the world occupy the White House, without a doubt."
At another session at the conference Jalil stated that Muslims shouldn't allow, "the Zionists of the media to dictate what Islam is to us," adding that Muslims must be, "compassionate with each other," but "hard against the kufr [unbeliever]."
About Jalil, Investigative Project Director Steven Emerson states:
"His [Jalil's] comments betray an effort to instill hatred of the United States as the enemy of Islam by making a series of false allegations portraying the U.S. as an evil country...This is a man who is supposed to be spreading words of reconciliation and moderation as head Islamic chaplain - not inciting followers to believe that the U.S. government and 'Zionists' are plotting a conspiracy of persecution against Muslims."

NEW YORK (AP) _ Correction officers rallied with clergy and Muslim supporters to support a suspended jails chaplain, under investigation for allegedly making a comment that "the greatest terrorists in the world would occupy the White House."
Dozens of supporters attended the Sunday rally to support Umar Abdul-Jalil, according to several published reports.
"I've never betrayed your trust. ... I will not waver in my faith," Abdul-Jalil said. He reiterated earlier statements that he has campaigned for Republicans, including President Bush.
The New York Post reported Thursday that the remarks by Abdul-Jalil were captured on an audiotape last April by the Investigative Project, a counterterrorism group, during an address to the Muslim Students Association in Tucson, Ariz.
Abdul-Jalil, a prominent imam from Harlem, was appointed in 2004 to the $76,000 job in which he oversees 40 chaplains of all faiths.
He was put on paid administrative leave Thursday while Mayor Michael Bloomberg, city lawyers and correction officials review the remarks. Bloomberg said Sunday he will likely make a decision on Abdul-Jalil later this week.
At Sunday's rally, the Rev. Lonnie McLeod of the Church of High Hope said that Abdul-Jalil was "as true an American as you would ever find."
